I'm thinking this one is very very tilted towards soldier and infiltrator due to assault rifle and sniper goodness.  The powers are fairly inffective. They almost seem a bit broken in many cases.

Vanguard. Quick shield recharge plus movement through obstacles removing the greatest impediment to an extremely powerful weapon, the shotgun, which also allows you to melee and stagger the enemy reducing their offensive output. You also get easy access to squad cryo ammo which is a wonderfully powerful crowd control. Overall I've found the vanguard to kill faster than any other class, since its damage isn't nearly as tied up to powers, such as cloak or adrenaline rush.

The argument against the vanguard is you die a lot, but that is mostly due to user error. I've done an insanity vanguard with only 2 deaths, both of which were completely my fault for bad charge targets. Higher learning curve than soldier or infiltrator? Perhaps so, but I would encourage anyone who really doubts the power of the vanguard to sit down and really learn and play it.

IMHO:

Vanguard is the best class. Provides the most fun, and no other class can end fights so quickly.

Engineer.

The drone is godly at distracting enemies, even the toughest enemies can be constantly distracted by drones even when they are fully protected, plus it does respectible AoE damage by exploding. Add that to the range of versitile AoE damage/CC effects the engineer gets. Use your powers even half right and you can just rip stuff up. Very fun, too.

It's hard to say really. I'm pretty sure that a well played Vanguard would beat the game faster than any other class, but that doesn't necessarily make it the most powerful class. Other classes kill slower, but they have more room for error whereas a Vanguard who makes a mistake will die.

I also pick Engineer. Though an Engineer can't kill as quickly as a Vanguard, its crowd control and powers cannot be matched. The drone is incredible and it makes fights against Harbinger, Heavy Mechs, Krogans a lot easier than it could be. Having overload allows you to strip away the target's defenses and incinerate is a great way at disabling an organic while scorching them to death. They have great versatility and can basically fill the role of any class while fighting. The only issue you would really have are the Geth Destroyers (Since they ignore the drone) and quite possibly the collector ship.

PS, Drone works on the Reaper Larva so if you place it in front of Harbinger, it has a chance of making the Reaper attack the Harbinger.

Each class is different  and everyones choice of  "Best" class will vary. Pointless topic.

Yeah, there is no best. I love playing a Sentinel. Played Engineer before but wasn't fully satisfying for me. Sentinel fits my playstyle a lot more.

And Techs&Biotics aren't weak. Ever seen what a Heavy Incinerate or Heavy Warp does to enemies? And you can hit enemies behind cover to boot. Something a weapon can't do. Except some heavy weapons.

Yeah, powers are far from being ineffective, they just have a different playstyle than ME1. In ME2 you have to play more tactical and depend more on your squad, oppose to just soloing everything in ME1. An Engineer doesn't have to worry about it as much as an Adept would, mainly because it has powers that removes armor / shields while the Adept executes an opponent after the shield / armor's destroyed.

Honestly, you should try out the other classes and start experimenting with strategies. The more you involve your squad, the more fun it becomes.

the good thing bioware has is that all the classes play very differently. each can fill that niche a player wants in a video game. whichever one of those particular classes fits your playstyle would be the best class. snipers love the infiltrator and combat junkies love the soldiers. but if theres a class deamed "best" in terms of overall usage, id say it starts with the sentinel. whichever way you go with the sentinels bonus power or bonus weapon are all bonusees. the sentinel starts off great, and ends even better. throw field is one of the best and what ive found to be the funnest biotic ability in game. heavy warp works as a great debuff on armors/barriers. 1 point in overload works GREAT on shields even on insanity. i go raider because i like firepower. same reason i took power armor. my bonus weapon of choice is the sniper rifle. the sniper rifle "completes" your repertoire of weapons. its just makes sense. shotgun is not needed. widow would be nice tho. (HOLY ****!!!!! i just talked like mordin!!!) my bonus talent has been warp ammo. ive tried AP, but thought warp ammo would work good with throw/warp. so with that build ive got a disable for every encounter. it works great.

I hate to be wishy washy, but they're all good, depending on your prefered playstyle. I like adept and vanguard the most (for different reasons) but that's because I like their playstyles (arcing powers never gets old for me, for some reason, and Charge is hella fun, even if it is dangerous.)

Agreed. In ME1, I was a heavy Biotic player (Adept / Vanguad.) But it seems I switched over to Tech in ME2. I've beaten the game four times, two as an Infiltrator (Normal and Veteran) and two as an Engineer (Hardcore and Insanity.)

Might want to try out the Sentinel. Of all the current classes, it plays most like the Vanguard of old. The Adept is great - but it's all about the power combos. If you don't like comboing powers and using exactly the right power for the right situation, then playing Adept is useless since you're likely going to be playing like a Sentinel anyways. If you're going to play like a Sentinel, might as well BE a Sentinel.

I agree that any class can be very effective. I've used the save editor to try different battles as most classes and didn't find any of them to be definitively worse than any other, they're all fun if you use them properly.

Kinda like asking whats the best color in the world. All are different enough to be enjoyed by all. Also biotics are incredibly effective if played properly, the game kinda has a rock paper scissors thing going on with the shields/Armor?Barriers. Just gotta know how to play it right.

If you're looking for a fast run with a character that has an obvious solution to every problem, play Soldiers. Most overall damage, good survivability, and a modular offense.

If you're looking to have a ****ton of fun, I'd recommend Adept or Vanguard. The Vanguard has a steeper learning curve than other classes, but it is very gratifying to shoot an enemy in the face with a shotgun. The Adept just blows everything up. It's quite glorious.

Every class is good in different areas. Soldier's are very good frontline fighters, with survivability and passive dmg. While adepts are more power biased, and aoe (if you spec aoe).

For me the best class is Sentinel, it is fun because it is so balanced, and got many types of powers, works in most situation.

I would say, go with the class you think is most fun. Don't worry about what is best.

If you still can't decide I'd recommend editing a save before a good battle to try out all the classes later in the game. Details on how to do this here: www.masseffect2faces.com/index.php

I've given Sentinel a try, though I haven't spent too much time with the class. The class itself seems very slow and defense orientated, which technically doesn't suit my playstyle. The thing I enjoyed about the Infiltrator (Which I am now doing my third run as one since I accidentally deleted a previous completed save file :( ) and the Engineer is that you have the option to be both aggressive and conservative depending on the situation. From the videos I've seen for Sentinel, the amount of damage you deal isn't enough. Granted, I don't know much about the class really either, so my opinion is sort of bias.

Picking a good team to support your Shep for each mission is far more important then what class you are.

Sentinel can be aggressive too, check out mine on the reaper level.

Indeed. I might give it a shot later.. I think I subconsciously plan to beat the game with every class multiple times. 2 times as Infiltrator (Soon to be 3) 2 times as Engineer.. My my.. haha.

On the whole, I'd say the class is kind of middle-of-the-road. It doesn't excel at any one thing, really, and it has no ammo skills, and the guns are mediocre. That said, it can hit Shields with Overload, Armor and Barrier with Warp, and anything undefended with either Cryo Blast or Throw. I believe AI Hacking is also on the menu. Generally, the way I played it, I got AP Ammo and used that and guns for killing, Throw and Cryo for control, and my inherent class powers for defense stripping. It worked well enough on Hardcore, though it went somewhat the slowest of all my playthroughs.

Defense is top-notch with Tech Armor, though. Very tough class. At the start, it plays somewhat like an Adept, since I took Energy Drain for my Adept, and leveled Warp and Overload first for Sentinel. They diverge once I started putting points into Pull and Sing for Adept, Tech Armor and AP Ammo for Sentinel.

I always been a soldier or vanguard, until I tried the infiltrator class.

Have to say that is one fun class, and I definitely will be an infiltrator in ME3

Sniper rifles FTW
