Good for MSNBC they have finally found something they can report on truthfully and with some knowledge of the subject.. Goes to prove boys and girls that if you fail enough you will get it right in time.

You speak with some authority on this. Do you work for Fox News? Oh right, their commentators didn't get their Mass Effect facts right, nor played the game.

So you do nto read what you type yourself? A commetator is not a reporter and I believe there was one gameing guy on there doing his best to set things stright but that was what 3 years ago and I do not feel like looking it up. Really people let that crap go it is just a game and there is alot mroe impotant things fro news channels to worry about. Oh I do not know unemployment and economy for starters it is just a freaking game.

Oh hell let us blame Bush. Posted Image

Good article, though. Obviously written by somebody who's enoyed the games.

I had much the same reaction, but was able to suppress those urges, but when people started posting about things she did not say....The English lit teacher in me could not be contained....

The "role" there could easily have been a pun, and that's how I read it. Just putting that out there.

Yes, it was Adam Sessler; I recall the interview quite well, and my point was that they specifically chose commentators (aside from Sess) who openly admitted to not knowing the material they are speaking about. That cannot qualify them as experts, but it does give ammunition to the anti-gaming lobbies out there. Also bear in mind the person I had responded to slammed the source of this article, despite it being factual. Yes, there are "more important" things in this world, but some people won't let the facts get in the way of good rhetoric, and this is primarily a gaming forum.

The problem with the poll is that the results will be skewed thanks to them including DA:O in there along with ME. Inconsistent results are inconsistent >:P

Never thought of that.... thats a really good point.... considering its MSNBC and there were no other glaring mistakes (seems like someone might have actually edited *gasp* before posting it) you are probably correct in it being a pun.

Yes, well, humans are fickle things.

I thought it was just nice to see a positive review of the romances for a change, and not a nudity witch-hunt.

Sooner or later someone is going to make a thread specifically about that poll....
And somewhere around page 3 someone is going to say:
  • I just did the poll, did you guys notice that article on romances next to it?
And at that moment I will burst into tears and start banging my head against the wall...

PS: I actually feel a bit guilty now, I have 'No Script' and did not even know there was a poll until someone mentioned it. If I had known I might not have posted this thread hear. It feels like us forum fans are kind of 'stacking the deck' as it were. And the fact that someone is saying the poll is skewed because it includes DA:O, when the article was about relationships and romances in both games, is kind of.... yeah... I feel really guilty now...

Oh, I read the article.  I wouldn't have done the poll without having read the article first.  I just feel that, if you're going to ask who people would woo, you should seperate the games, so as to get a better idea of which characters in which game people are drawn to.  For example, I've never played DA:O, so I have no idea who those people are aside from their reputation.

You'd like Alistair. He has that whole 'strong but innocent' thing going on.

Plus he has a cracking sense of humour.

I also heard that you really have to work to get a happy ending with him too.

Once you meet Alistair you'll understand exactly how short Kaidan comes in comparison as a relationship. Just my opinion of course.

Yep. His romance is really big on the whole 'sacrifice' theme.

Hence why Kaidan is forever known to me as 'Pinocchio'.

Alistair was a very well crafted character, one of Bioware's best ever, he has great bromance vibes and the best written romance in DA:O (imho) however *spoilers* he stabbed my poor female daelish elf through the heart and I didn't like the fact that you couldn't spare Loghain and keep him as part of your party.  I wanted to tell him to grow the **** up and than hand him a copy of A Game of Thrones to show him why killing a high ranking noble is bad regardless of the circumstances.

Since people have an issue of seeing that "relationship" does not
always mean romance, I got the definition of relationship for those
people:

re⋅la⋅tion⋅ship [ri-ley-shuhPosted Imagen-ship]

1. a connection, association, or involvement.
2. connection between persons by blood or marriage.
3. an emotional or other connection between people: the relationship between teachers and students.
4. a sexual involvement; affair.

There you go. MULTIPLE definitions. Not just one. Hope this places an understanding for those out there that don't know what "relationship" means :)

EDIT: My net is being stupid today and made this post multiple times... I have since erased the content of those previous messages. Sorry about that...

Only by a narrow 54% margin.

I don't really have any problems with the article i guess, but can't video games just be video games? I feel like there is this need for people who like video games to justify their existence to the non-gaming populous by overstating some sort of "beneficial" aspect of the game. The beneficial aspect of the game is that it is fun. We shouldn't need articles arguing that it somehow tells us something about relationships. It should be enough that a certain segment of the poupulation loves to play video games. No one ever worries about the social or cultural value of playing darts.

I think a possitive article in the mainstream media about this issue is a step in the right direction.  However, at the same time the author has misinformed her readers about the importance and required effort for these romances just to make her article appear more relavant.

  • It does not take HOURS of game time to develop the romances in either game (tho, DA:O does take a bit longer)
  • Neither game REQUIRES that you have any type of romance to complete or even assist in completion.
The fact that the author made it sound like a major portion of the game was some sort of relationship simulator just to make article more "important" is failry lame.  As a joke, the concept of using the games as a relationship trainers is doable.  As a semi-serious take on relationships it makes eveyrone involved look like huge geeks to anyone who reads this and has no backround about the games.

Not sure if if Fox News ranting about lesbian sex scenes isn't better for the game than this.
