I had no intention of going down that tree, then I got hit with that sucker then immediately brought Wynne out of retirement (Morrigan's my only mage usually) and then leveled her up for it. Killer!
Holy crap, Stinging Swarm!

Shapeshifter Swarm is even better. But yea it can be a pretty good spell. I haven't used it much but I did try it out last game.

I do like that spell. I am also fairly certain that when it jumps targets the duration gets reset. It is only supposed to last for 10 seconds, but I have had the swarm hang around for almost the full cooldown - 30 seconds. Works wonders on a bunch of critters packed together that have already been damaged. But there are two big drawbacks - the rest of the line is so-so and it deals nature dmg. A lot of monsters are immune to nature dmg.

Stinging Swarm stacked with Virulent Walking Bomb, and Crushing Prison DoT's(switching out gloves/rings on the fly) are what I am currently using in my newest playthrough(for an elemental autofire staff build).

Go Cone of Cold + V Walking Bomb + Stinging swarm + Stonefist + ??? = Proft

Nope. Tried that in an old playthrough, most times won't work. Cone of Cold won't last long enough for you to cast all those spells and Virulent Walking Bomb will draw your target back to you and waste the Stinging Swarm he's carrying.
AlgolagniaVolcae's suggestion works well though.

Stinging swarm is the only decent shapeshifting thing except for the demon bear

+1. Another one gets it all wrong lol.
Anyway the shapeshifting comment is forgivable since SS is complicated, but is the summoning line really this obscure?
Stinging Swarm is not the same as Flying Swarm.

Until someone drops a Fireball and your Shapeshifter dies. That one spell may own, but you can't do anything else. Best to just make a nuker if you want damage, as it deals MORE damage and can CC or Heal on the side.

Funny. Except mages would be quite dead or disabled when the Shapeshifter changes forms, and it's not exactly healthy for someone to use Flying Swarm in a battle with lots of fireworks, like dragon fights. Or do your characters also fight dragons naked? Yes, I thought so.
Yes, yes, and as soon as they invent a nuke spell that deals as much damage to a single target as good ol' melee fighting to an elite or boss, with little to no cooldown, and that enemies can't resist, be sure to post it will you?
Are you implying that Shapeshifters can't nuke or support or CC? Or do you really just enjoy seeing your Shapeshifter in animal form that you don't think turning him/her into a mage and casting spells before shifting, or vice-versa, is more effective? ...right.
It's one thing to keep your own opinions about the specialization and only be guilty of not knowing better, and another thing to claim to know something about when obviously you don't, at very least, know how to make it function.

Back to the orginal subject. I am 100% positive that when the Swarm kills someone it completely resets the damage and duration. I did this by modifying the spell script to print off stats for each jump. The spell will look for targets in a 10 radius, which is very large the same radius as inferno.
This makes the spell, much, much more powerful. Toss an afflection hex on the toughest critter in a group and then cast stinging swarm on someone else. Works just great against melee mobs attacking your party.

I agree that the Stinging Swarm Spell is nasty... It took out my mage as effectively as Curse of Mortality... i had a tendency to only heal when i was around 30% and i hadn't yet learned to use the Dispel Magic equivalent (or use Alistair's innate talent)... but adapt or die... or just kill the mage that cast the spell and hope that works...

Yes. If you cast it on an enemy and direct party fire, it will keep on jumping from enemy to enemy. It's like having a 5th party member.
