Hi, I'm sorry if this has been asked before (I checked the read first, but it didn't seem to cover my question). This has been bothering me for a while:

In the final scene of ME2, we see a fleet of reapers approaching the Milky Way galaxy. All the reapers are physically similar to Sovereign. But as we've learned, the reapers reproduce through the harvesting sentient races. This made me consider that these reapers took after the protheans (because both have a large number of tentacles). But the destroyed reaper you're sent to investigate looks the same as sovereign and harbinger, yet is several million years old (too old to be modeled after the protheans). If they were produced by, and look like, old sapient species and can still function after several million years, then why don't we see more variety in the types of reapers?

There have been several theories reguarding this, first off the protheans weren't turned into a reaper, EDI says at the end that the protheans most likely couldn't be turned into one and were thus repurposed into the collectors. Secondly apparently (i do not have it so I can't verify) in the mass effect 2 art book that comes with the collectors edition it shows concept art for the human reaper and some of it is of a more fully finished human reaper that starts adding layers onto it that eventually makes it resemble the more familiar cuttlefish form. Its likely that the species shape is retained more in the heart or core of the reaper.

Yeah. All reapers, regardless of what their original race was, will have an outer shell or whatever that gives them their similar look.

That Human reaper you fought at the end of ME2. As big as it was, it was still tiny compared to Sovereign. It seems to me that the part that looks like the original race is probably hidden deep within the center of the entire Reaper body.
