Well, sorry for bumping my own thread, but I just posted a simple example on how to make your choices matter without drastically changing anything or making the programmers and writers work too hard:
Decision in ME1: Save the Council or not
1) Don't save them = The new one doesn't like you. You don't get the choice of rejoining the Spectres
2) Save them = You get the choice to rejoin which comes to decison in ME2:
2a) You tell them to screw themselves = game just like it is now
2b) You rejoin the Spectres = Store with some mid-level Spectre gear. Nothing 'uber' just something to help out starting characters.
Result: You made a choice and it made a difference! Neither choice will break the game for oyu, and programming that into the game would be really easy! It could be done with less than 5 additional sentences performed by the voice actors. And an interface in the C-Sec offices were you can buy the stuff.
Hell, if you really want to even it out you could have TIM give you an alternate set of weapons somewhere on Omega if you choose not to rejoin the ranks.
It's not much, but at least they would actively give me something...
See you're not thinking it through, if you killed the old council, the new one is headed by a human and in my case Anderson(didnt understand people picking Udina, they guy doesnt like you) and as such he can make you a specter without talking with the new council.
He tells you as much.
You are playing the game with the mentality that Paragon=good and Renegade=bad, which isnt true. Shepard is always the hero, the difference is wether you want to play Superman or Batman or Spider-Man or Punisher.
Saveing the council means the other races trust you more+the council owes you one.
Letting the council die means the aliens dont trust you that much, but since the new council is headed by a human, he wouldnt second guess you and be in your corner in all things.

And kor is correct. This Op is where all your opinions and arguments fall down. You can't have plyed well, correctly or done your research. If you kill the council, as acting counciler Anderson gives you back your Spectre status.

she died because you missed an upgrade for the Normandy
Ah, that makes sense.... I was skipping the silly planet scanning this run through. Glad it was something a bit more tangible than loyalty.

Okay, I get the feeling we got off in the wrong foot here. And reading back I fully acknowledge that this is due to poor wording on my part when I talked about my baseline assumption
I never wanted to imply that whoever did not save everybody is stupid
Reading back I can fully understand how this passage can come off as arrogant and idiotic!
Please let me clarify my assumption about my baseline. My goal (and I think the goal of many gamers here) is to have a playthrough that gives Shepard the best chances of defeating the reapers in ME3. Due to this it is my beleive that once people know how to save everybody most imports into ME3 will be from a game where they in fact saved everybody. Thus the badly put 'smart' and 'stupid'. It's not about the player, it's about the question why somebody should knowingly cripple themselves in ME3. (Especially since there is a possibility of loosing out on gamecontent because of missing characters) (And this is the big difference to ME1. In ME1 there is no perfect way, no matter what you do, you loose somebody. And what really bothered me in ME2 was that this hard choice meant nothing anymore)
So, please let me apologize to everybody that I unwantingly offended! It truly was not my intention!
The whole passage sounded better when it was still in my head (and thus in German)
I hope that this might help to resolve some of the issues that you have with my post. I will try to rephrase my original post to make it clearer what I wanted to express.
