Dude.  Check the join date of my Bioware account- not the social.

I was fourteen.  At fourteen, I also attempted suicide due to an assault, tried to run away to Philadelphia (for two whole days) in the middle of winter without shoes or a jacket, cried horribly each time I read the book the High King by Lloyd Alexander and yet read it at least once a month, had an American Girl doll I called Emily Laura Ariel Heart, decided I was a vegetarian despite the fact that I hated beans and almost got hospitalised for my incredibly unhealthy diet as I was getting no protein, and pouted constantly about how all my friends had been to Disney World and we were too poor to go (or perhaps too sensible- I believe we had the money, my mother just thought it was a waste).  I thought Oasis was the coolest band EVEH and that they were SO much better then N*Sync and Backstreet Boys and whatever else my friends liked back then (5ive?  98*degrees?  Was Hanson still around?) despite the fact that they're a crappy ripoff Beatles band fronted by egotistical jerks who give no respect to those who came before them.  I think I still wanted to be an Animorph and hated the series for ending.

I also played video games, even though we were finally starting to reach the point where Girls Don't Play Video Games.  And, apparently, I liked Bioware enough to sign up on their site.  My real life nickname was/is actually a 'boys name'- never met another girl called that- and I decided that adding -chan would make it obvious that I was a girl because I was insecure due to real life people assuming I was a guy after hearing my name until they met me.  Then I remembered that You Shouldn't Use Your Real Name On the Internet, o'fourteen old me, and came up with a made-up nickname (...might have been an Everquest character?), that, I suppose, sounds girly enough (gotta love names ending in a).  So the -chan wasn't neccessary.  Hindsight, twenty-twenty, si?

I think, out of all the stupid and useless things I did at fourteen, calling myself -chan on a message board is pretty low on my list of things I'm ashamed about.  I mean, I could have been backing the Ace Combat games.  That would be really sad.

Between masturbating over Tali and giggling over, say, the slash between Riou and Jowy in SuikodenII (and I agree: that is one of the amusing draws of some jrpgs), I'll choose the second, thanks.  And between Summoner and Final Fantasy IX, I'll choose Final Fantasy IX any day.  Ugh, Summoner.
(And yes, Pokemon is a jrpg, goofs.  Duh!)

Dear lord a wall of text. You don't have to worry -- at least your honest about masturbating to Tali like all the other Tali fans. Unlike some other Weeaboo's. And at least you admit you like those said Japanese games. So I have no more quarrel with you.

I couldn't find Combo Breaker flags for other Western Countries, my apologizes.

That flag is awesome. I love all four of those countries.

On Topic: JRPGs and Square Enix have failed to evolve in the last decade. Tons of Final Fantasy games were ground breaking in one way or another and then kind of stopped after 7. Ever since FF X-2, I haven't really played a JRPG (FF X-2 sucked btw, and I loved FF X). With the ever increasing popularity of MMOs (FF 11 is bad) and Bioware dominating the RPG market with amazing game after amazing game JRPGs have lost their luster. There feels like so much more quality in a Bioware RPG versus the standard JRPG. Look at a franchise like Pokemon; in over 10 years it really hasn't changed at all. Ironic for Pokemon to refuse to evolve (quit holding "B" Nintendo!).

I would like for Pokemon to be able to chose your own character. Im black and I would like to see some more tints to the character in Pokemon. Whatever though. Also I stopped playing Final Fantasy and JRPG's as a whole at X-2 as well. I felt like I was playing a monster baby of Sailor Moon and something that Squire Enix crapped out and made love to Sailor Moon and came forth X-2.

Dragon Age = "Attack, wait... Oh noes, I need to use an item. Pause the game, use quick heal. Unpause, wait. Use spell. Wait." That is the majority of my experience with Dragon Age, just an MMORPG but single player, with a good story and good character interaction. Still like DA, don't get me wrong... But I find myself bore of it...

I swear, I have more fun with a few JRPGs that actually use Turn Base. Mass Effect is my savior. But don't you DARE say we get options, sure we can say something. But do we have an option that be "screw this, let someone else handle it." Only Golden Sun had that option, and the game immediately ended because of it. Then reload before having to choose to do something. Morrowind was crap. Two Worlds, dunno if it is JRPG or WRPG, I need to find out. But it is absolute ****! Oblivion was actually decent. Final Fantasy fails. Shin Megami Tensei has got the JRPG/WRPG since super nintendo in Japan. Hell, the latest new SMT is Devil Survivor in DS, and it has 5 endings depending how you approach the final obstacle. (I.E. Siege war against God, or become a Messiah). Is it just me or SMT is doing better than FF?

The amount of cultural ignorance, insensitivity, racism and xenophobia in this thread is startling.

Nothing Toriyama-san said about western RPGs is incorrect provided by "western" you assume he's simply referring to Bethesda RPGs. Morrowind, Obliviion and Fallout all basically do dump the player in the middle of a large open world with little direction and just expect you to find your own way. Consequently, I've never been able to get through a Bethesda RPG. I played Morrowind for about 4 hours before giving up on it, I spent more time creating my character in Oblivion than I did playing that game and I think Fallout 3 lasted about a week before I traded it in for a copy of Tales of Vesperia. The reasons were the same every time: no direction and lack of a compelling story (that I don't have to go out of my way to "find").

Most BioWare RPGs aren't all that dissimilar to JRPGs. Maybe back in the days of Baldur's Gate there was a distinction but Mass Effect and Dragon Age are both very linear games. Sure, you can choose whether to go to Feros or Noveria first, but for the most part your path is clearly laid out in front of you and you're just along for the ride.

You can't even argue that character customization is a higher priority in BioWare RPGs as there have been many a Final Fantasy title with greater customization than anything in ME or DA (FF12's "license board" in particular allowed for almost limitless skill customization).

BioWare RPGs are very much linear story-focused RPGs, not unlike most JRPGs. The only difference between them is that the story and themes therein are tailored for western audiences. Saying that that makes them "better" is no different than saying that western culture itself is better... and that's a very ignorant statement to make.

Western rpgs took the crown from jrpgs a while ago as of right now it goes without saying that Bioware and Bethesda are at the forefront of rpgs.

Stupid Famitsu gives everything a perfect score these days.

Final Fantasy games were good back during the 16-32 bit era but the RPG genre has moved on, evolved, and gotten better. Square/Enix refuses to push the envelope forward in terms of story telling and gameplay.

They think the way to go is to just take the same tired premise of an adolescent saving the world and just make it bigger budget and make the cut scenes flashier.

Honestly... I wouldn't count "Bethesda" to that, they make good Singleplayer MMOs.
Having a large world mostly based on randomized algorithms, filling it with empty soulless characters with spare dialogue and filling it with MMO-type quests.

I'd rather count developers like Obsidian, Piranha Bytes, the now dead Troika and maybe up and coming "CD Projekt" and "Radon Labs".

Yeah I totally feel like Bethesda gets way too much credit. They are not even close to as good as Bioware. Even you never interacted with a single person in World of Warcraft, it is still a better game than most RPGs.

@ Garuda In regards to Pokemon: I definitely agree there should be more of a create your character but they also need to give the game a huge overhaul. Enough of this -choose from a Grass, Fire, Water Pokemon then fight some gyms and then defeat some sort of Elite Four, don't catch or use any Pokemon on your march to beating the game because your starter Pokemon will dominate with his higher level.

Pokemon could make an absolutely fantastic MMO. You would bring in a younger audience, all the mobs would be Pokemon/Trainers, the abilities are perfect for converting into an MMO action bar style etc...
