Western rpgs took the crown from jrpgs a while ago as of right now it goes without saying that Bioware and Bethesda are at the forefront of rpgs.

You're right.  I used to be into JRPGs but games like Deus Ex, and Knights of the Old Republic were turning points for me.

Western RPGs actually innovate and they move the genre forward.

It seems that Square/Enix thinks they've already perfected the genre and the only improvements necessary are flashier cutscenes.
The Final Fantasy series has grown stale and I have honestly not enjoyed a Final Fantasy game since Final Fantasy Tactics.

Question: What does this any of this have to do with ME2 and why is it in the ME general forum?

So Western RPGers can laugh at the fail of Final Fantasy, though it seems some of them go as far and hit every JRPG that is even better than Fail Fantasy.

Honestly... I wouldn't count "Bethesda" to that, they make good Singleplayer MMOs.
Having a large world mostly based on randomized algorithms, filling it with empty soulless characters with spare dialogue and filling it with MMO-type quests.

I'd rather count developers like Obsidian, Piranha Bytes, the now dead Troika and maybe up and coming "CD Projekt" and "Radon Labs".

Yeah I totally feel like Bethesda gets way too much credit. They are not even close to as good as Bioware. Even you never interacted with a single person in World of Warcraft, it is still a better game than most RPGs.

@ Garuda In regards to Pokemon: I definitely agree there should be more of a create your character but they also need to give the game a huge overhaul. Enough of this -choose from a Grass, Fire, Water Pokemon then fight some gyms and then defeat some sort of Elite Four, don't catch or use any Pokemon on your march to beating the game because your starter Pokemon will dominate with his higher level.

Pokemon could make an absolutely fantastic MMO. You would bring in a younger audience, all the mobs would be Pokemon/Trainers, the abilities are perfect for converting into an MMO action bar style etc...

I used to love playing every new edition of Pokemon. After the last game I just kinda fell out of love with it. I didn't even finish it and that's a first. I always finish Pokemon games if nothing else.

I agree but Japanese are plagued with not being changed. Just how like they still have a deep resentment for other foreigners. It shows in there games as well. Zelda, Mario, Final Fantasy, Metroid and a slew of other games. They are afraid of change. Threw change the outcome may not always be a success but one more step to a better game in the end.

I sincerely hope that the Final Fantasy series ends soon. Like others have said it has long outlived it's welcome and things keep going downhill.

Just think. If Mass Effect 3 were to turn out to be crap, we would be upset but we wouldn't necessarily not give Mass Effect 4 a chance, right?

What would happen though if Mass Effect 3, 4, and 5 also turned out to be letdowns? Don't you think we'd give up on the series by then?

I'm Commander Shepard, and I'm proud to say that I have never liked JRPGs. Never.

You have an excellent point. I may like Eastern RPGs but I found that I haven't been buying them as much as I used to. I may get niche software such as Mana Khemia and Persona is always a sell. However, I've realized I haven't been going out of my way to get anything new. I look at the boxes and I'm sure it's something I've already played.

I think alot of the poularity of the early FF games was the storyline. I am a proud fan of the final fantasy series (I own a copy of every FF produced even the ones that only came out in japan), and the stories just have not been the same since Hironobu left. I personally only really played them for the story since there was little inovation in game mechanics with each incarnaion.

X-2 was garbage. I still can't believe I brought it. I don't even know what the hell to do with the disk now.

I think as long as you went into it with low expectations it was ok.  It was a side story.  People were expecting a full fledged FF and it just wasn't meant to be that.  People demanded that for once Square cease the whole sly, not really going to tell you what happened at the end bs and to actually give some closure.  That's what that game was for, no more, no less.  It did it's job, not the best attempt at it, but a decent college try nonetheless.

Also well done Mikka, that was quite the read.  Many do not have the strength to even acknowledge their past.  That you can acknowledge and recant it, even amidst the anonymity of the internet, takes a considerable force of will and strength that few ever find.  Well done.

This is a topic point I've been hammering home since before Mass2 screenshots were out. Japanese RPG's stagnate. Hell, the Japanese Gaming industry is nothing but (Wrex inc) Pathetic old varren trying to protect their stick in the mud.

Essentially they don't embrace new ideas, hell, the one team that had the new ideas that did most of the game design for FFXII (actually the best gameplay wise FF in my opinion if lacking in the story and characterization) got relegated to the MMO group (Where they are actually doing new, interesting ideas, but going up against WoW on the MMO market is more One Sided now then the Canadian V. <Anyone> Hockey games so far on the Olympics. So good new ideas pretty much wasted.

Essentially, SE's remark comes off as a compliment, if an unintended one. Citing the two (In my opinion) Greatest RPG makers of the current market as the reason the most well-known RPG producer in the world's games look like crap.

But there's still a lot of people who like what FF is putting out. FFXII got stellar reviews from the critics. FFVII got near perfect scores from reviews. FFXIII hasn't gotten very good reviews so far. FFXIII: Versus still has to be reviewed.

Once again, there is a very big different between not liking something personally, and something being of low quality.

The critics tend to disagree with you. Unelss you mean FFXIII specifically. Then they more or less agree with you.

In either case, most of everyone here hasn't even played it yet, because it hasn't released outside Japan yet. So most of the folks here really don't know if it's any good or not.

To this day I will never see what everyone thought was so great about Final Fantasy 7. Hands down that was one of the Final Fantasy games I liked the least, along with X-2. It wasn't original and Sephiroth's motivations left alot to be desired.

Also, the critics tend to be Japanese or even Wapanese buisiness men,
who are paid by the Japanese gaming companies for their super high scores.

If I didn't disagree with them I wouldn't have a soul.

To be fair, a lot of these Japanese stories in games are 10X more original than most of what comes out of western game makers. A lot of times it's also really weird. But original.

Again, I love BioWare.

But again, they are far from perfect, and they are far from up to par with some of the developes elsewhere. The only strict originality that comes out of BioWare is individual characterization, and even then almost all of their characters fit archetypes of some kind. Their world building is great, but no greater than the world building of other some developers.

He was asked a question and answered as a representative of Square-Enix. He's not going to say, 'yes, we failed. Sorry' lol.

Similar to the question they asked Greg, what he thinks is wrong with JRPGs. He just answered, doesn't hate them, he played a bunch of them.

But anyway, fanboys never understand or think before posting and always bark at each other.
