Also, the critics tend to be Japanese or even Wapanese buisiness men,
who are paid by the Japanese gaming companies for their super high scores.
If I didn't disagree with them I wouldn't have a soul.
They're the gaming review sites and magazines.
If it was convenient for you, you'd just as quickly cite them to defend ME. Or you'd go to sales. And then when compartive sales were addressed you turn around and blame the japanese again. Can you make a constructive argument, please?

To be fair, a lot of these Japanese stories in games are 10X more original than most of what comes out of western game makers. A lot of times it's also really weird. But original.Kerridan Kaiba wrote...
It wasn't original and Sephiroth's motivations left alot to be desired.
Again, I love BioWare.
But again, they are far from perfect, and they are far from up to par with some of the developes elsewhere. The only strict originality that comes out of BioWare is individual characterization, and even then almost all of their characters fit archetypes of some kind. Their world building is great, but no greater than the world building of other some developers.
I don't know if I can totally agree with that. Some games have a good portions of original story bits. Lost Odyssey was one. I haven't finished it, but the story was wonderful. The way they presented it though flashbacks and story entries was heartfelt.
Then we get to another game by the same company, Blue Dragon. The whole story was built around, "I won't give up!". It was like an RPG made for kids even though it was rated Teen. There was little to no story and what was there was silly and nonsensical.
I’ve been hard-pressed to find original stories now. I know most of them are dried up but they aren’t pushing any new boundaries. We don’t know what FF13 will be like, but we know Square is dead set on some standard rules. Rules they have a hard time breaking out of and they will need to if they want to compete in this new age. The lines of RPG are bending with other genres and Square is slow on the uptake.

I'm not super concerned originality because it's such a rare thing anyway. Rather than demand it, I'm really impressed when I see a solid example of it. All I expect is quality. Square usually puts out serious quality. It's rarely original, but almost always done very well. Perhaps FFXIII will turn out to be a stumble, like FFX-2 was. Perhaps it won't. I won't know what I think about that until I play it. But I know that despite a lot of the negative opinions on them, I really enjoyed FFX and FFXII. They were different, and different was nice.Kerridan Kaiba wrote...

Quality is good. Doing the same, "I have to save the world from, Evil Old Guy number 59." isn't what I'd look for in a new experience. Alot of these games are falling into the same rut. It's easy to get tired of them because we've played this game before. I know Garuda One and DrathanGervaise are yanking your chain but they have a point. The recipes are getting old and stale.

Also: Its a staple of RPGs period to save the world from the bad guy. >_> You could probably name the ones that DON'T involve that on probably one hand. And even if its more its nowhere near the amount of good RPGs out there. <_<
And uh...BioWare's game do the same thing. O_o
Malak?
Archedemon?
Saren?
Reapers?
If someone wants me to repost the cliche chart I will.

Heck even Pokemon you're trying to save the legendary pokemon from team rocket/magma/whatever flavor of the week.
