That would just be a life sim though. There would be no fun in it.

Heck even Pokemon you're trying to save the legendary pokemon from team rocket/magma/whatever flavor of the week.

God. I like to try to forget about them. What are we up to now? Still team Magma?

I don't even know anymore.

Though no one in their right mind can say Kingdom Hearts doesn't have one of the deepest video game stories out there. :wizard:

I will agree with what he says because he makes fun of both WRPG and JRPG's. Its quite funny.

I wish there would be RPGs that don't make you save jack. I say this about all games, not just Western or Eastern. They all fall into the same issues.

The Witcher is pretty good in this respect. Worth a play, and I think it's easily as good as DAO.

The irony is that We taught them the concept of RPGs, and they ran with it. Now jRPGs have been run into the ground, and wRPGs are on top again. Yay for competition!

I know I'm going to get killed here, but I absolutely hated Kingdom Hearts. If I'm a Final Fantasy girl, I'm a Disney Princess even more. Kingdom Hearts set me back with Square big time.

I'm actually working my way though that. I'm in the process of changing up gaming laptops, but should be back in the swing of that within the next week or so.

*stabs with a pencil*

How Dare YOU!

Just playing. KH is easily my favorite game. (Then again though I overanalyzed the whole Sky, Earth, Sea, heartless, nobodies thing to death and love the fact that the game is extremely deep and at the same time easy enough for kids to understand).

My favorite quote ever from Axel: "He made me feel...as though I had a heart."

Yay for Ho Yay in JRPGS!

KH is actually what made me like Square again. XD :wizard:

Also...Roxas. Poor poor Roxas :crying: I never cried so hard over a video game in my life. Just the way he disappeared was so...heartbreaking.

Roxas:
Sora. You're lucky. Looks like my summer vacation is... over.

:crying:

Also the ending of KH II (before the find the door to the light) was hands down one of the best video game endings I ever saw. (IF only they didn't do the normal disney style ending with the door to light appearing. Epic ending was epic). Alas. :(

I'm not super concerned originality because it's such a rare thing anyway. Rather than demand it, I'm really impressed when I see a solid example of it. All I expect is quality. Square usually puts out serious quality. It's rarely original, but almost always done very well. Perhaps FFXIII will turn out to be a stumble, like FFX-2 was. Perhaps it won't. I won't know what I think about that until I play it. But I know that despite a lot of the negative opinions on them, I really enjoyed FFX and FFXII. They were different, and different was nice.

Quality is good. Doing the same, "I have to save the world from, Evil Old Guy number 59." isn't what I'd look for in a new experience. Alot of these games are falling into the same rut. It's easy to get tired of them because we've played this game before. I know Garuda One and DrathanGervaise are yanking your chain but they have a point. The recipes are getting old and stale.

Crap DrathanGervaise we've  been found out, our plot foiled! This is merely a set back!

You know, as much as I dislike a lot of JRPGs, you gotta admit, who could hate Kefka? He's like one of the only villains to actually win/destroy the world/look like 80's David Bowie.

Mmm, play either that or the Earthbound series for a good JRPG.

Never played it, to be honest. My favorite genre is survival horror, so I'm okish with RPGs, but they're not my favorite.

I never played it so I picked up it a few days ago.

While it does have a few of the standard JRPG conventions, they're surprisingly light. After 18 hours so far I've yet to put someone on potion duty for numerous turns in a row, and that's always a huge one for me. That and NO RANDOM ENCOUNTERS! WEE!

I wish all JRPG's were like this game.

I'm amazed how this topic derailed from FFXIII vs. teh Westo to FFXII vs. teh Westo within the first page because someone can't read.

Kefka will always be my favourite villain of all time. Ruthless, brutal, bat**** crazy, and utterly hilarious. His theme also kicks serious ass. Earthbound is also fantastic, but you see, therein lies the rub. Old JRPGs are phenomenal, I could play FF6/Earthbound/Mario RPG/Chrono Trigger/Etc until the end of my life and be totally happy doing it, but these new games they've released are so... so bland. So formulaic. The last JRPG I played that I got any enjoyment from was Lost Odyssey and solely because of Kaim's memories, they always made me cry. That was just good writing. The gameplay was tired and old, though.

I respect BioWare for trying to merge different genres into one great experience, and they have my full support. I look forward to what this new decade brings in terms of gaming, and I hope Japan is ready to embrace the rest of the world and evolve with the times. They used to be a powerhouse in gaming, now the only Japanese company making bank is Nintendo. Time to step it up, nihon.

But why did the happy addition ruin it? I was sad up until that happened. (sad doesn't equal bad)

Happy addition ruined it because of the theme of the game. One of the biggest themes seemed to be sacrifice, hope and redemption.

Sora and Riku had sacrificed their freedom for the world of light and Riku had redeemed himself. Then all of a sudden: "NM! You get a get out of jail free card!"

Ick. I know they suffered up to that point but gah. That just irritated the hell out of me for some reason. =]
