Never been a big fan of the Final fantasy series apart from VII which is a classic. Final fantasy and most JRPGs these days for me pale in comparison to western developed RPGs like Fallout and Mass effect.
It really is a matter of taste at a certain point. Japanese media in general doesn't really do it for me, and not for lack of trying. I have plenty of friends obsessed with anime and manga, and my general reaction has been between

,

, or

. And occasionally

. We don't talk about those. On the other hand, I play Nintendo games with the same gusto as BioWare games, love the art style of most Japanese media, and worship the ground that Hayao Miyazaki walks on. Studio Ghibli + DS Game = FANGASM.
I have to say that of the JRPGs I've attempted to play, the only one that I ever completed was Valkyria Chronicles, which I really did enjoy. The plot and characters were, as in many JRPGs, full of silly, but it was such a fun game, and the graphics were jaw-droppingly gorgeous. The sticking point for me with most JRPGs has been, ironically enough, the storytelling. I don't mind being dropped in a brand-new world to sink or swim with little explanation--I do mind lacking compelling plot/character reasons for me to stick around and try to puzzle out what the hell is going on.
Or maybe I'm just picky. I've even had problems getting into FF7, considered one of SquareSoft's masterpieces.
