So..... would anyone else love to see a western-style RPG with a JRPG anime art style?

I've thought more than a few times how sweet Mass Effect would be as an anime.

Also @vhatever: Did a JRPG kill your mother and rape your father? What's with the stubborn animosity?

Eugh... no... I hate anime art style. Well, often. Sometimes it can be good.

Mass Effect has already been done in anime art style. It's called Mass Effect Gallaxies. ;)

Also, people should take a look at the art that inspired Final Fantasy. See if they think it's "anime" in the slightest.

Eh it really isn't anime.    No more then Disney movies are.

Last good game to come from SquareSoft was FF-X. Before it changed to Square-Enix. Its gone down-hill from there.

Square-Enix Europe has absorbed Eidos into itself, so we may still get some good games out of that part of the company.

FF-X was good? No I kid I joke. To each their own :P I did like the orb screen upgrade thingy.

Ya maybe we will get a new theif game. Please oh great waffle in the sky make this happen.

You do understand that just saying "I am right and you are wrong" does nothing. You actually need to provide some sort of evidence to support your claims or to dismiss others claims.

You can't compare the longevity of game studios as some sort of metric on the quality of games produced, or anything else for that matter, really, other than the dynamic "up and down" economy of the USA. Get this red herring garvage out of here. The stagnation of JRPG is probably a direct result of their crony capitilistic model that keeps proping up "something that used to work, so it should keep working". models Japan has been artifically keeping all sorts of industries alive by subsidizing them by the government.

In a way you can, because longevity = success and success usually comes from good games. but I agree (and I think everyone does) that the current gen JRPG's arent good enough.

However, ironically, the only JRPG (except Demon Souls) that pretty much everybody agree is really good is Tales of Vesperia. I say ironically because that series havent changed since Tales of Destiny 2 for PS1, it even got a world map, while games like Infinte Undiscovery and Magnacarta 2 tried different, new approaches.

Prove what? I have not made any claims of wrpg or jrpgs supremacy. You have and others have provided evidence but all you can say is "no that does not count".

But how can anyone go back to the on rails storyline approach prevelent in JRPGs when you're given so much interaction and involvement in games like Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age?  It's not just different, it's inferior.

No, it's just different.  It can only be declared superior or inferior based on critera, and the criteria are not universal.  There's no objective basis for comparison, and a subjective basis will vary.

Compare an FPS game to a rail shooter.  One is quite literally an "on-rails" experience.  That doesn't make it inherently worse.  Considering only the single-player experience, which is a better game, "Doom" or "Dead Space Extraction"?

Never been a big fan of the Final fantasy series apart from VII which is a classic. Final fantasy and most JRPGs these days for me pale in comparison to western developed RPGs like Fallout and Mass effect.

Admirable. However, vhatever has had plenty of opportunities to explain its argument. Instead, it constantly dismisses offered answers and demands more. It is quite obviously a troll, and a bad one.

It really is a matter of taste at a certain point.  Japanese media in general doesn't really do it for me, and not for lack of trying.  I have plenty of friends obsessed with anime and manga, and my general reaction has been between -_-, or .  And occasionally .  We don't talk about those.  On the other hand, I play Nintendo games with the same gusto as BioWare games, love the art style of most Japanese media, and worship the ground that Hayao Miyazaki walks on.  Studio Ghibli + DS Game = FANGASM.

I have to say that of the JRPGs I've attempted to play, the only one that I ever completed was Valkyria Chronicles, which I really did enjoy.  The plot and characters were, as in many JRPGs, full of silly, but it was such a fun game, and the graphics were jaw-droppingly gorgeous.  The sticking point for me with most JRPGs has been, ironically enough, the storytelling.  I don't mind being dropped in a brand-new world to sink or swim with little explanation--I do mind lacking compelling plot/character reasons for me to stick around and try to puzzle out what the hell is going on.

Or maybe I'm just picky.  I've even had problems getting into FF7, considered one of SquareSoft's masterpieces.

Don't feel bad I adore JRPGs and I can't get into FF7. :pinched:

Though I do adore: CC and AC.

Bah. :(

Hehe. The way he worded it was idiotic. But what he said is indeed true really.

If you look at the reviews which complained at Final Fantasy XIII, the main things they were complaining at was it's linearity and it's lack of side quests. Which is exactly what a western RPG does have.

Doesn't mean that either is a bad game. It just depends what a person is looking for in a game.

I'm sure if we sent Biowares games over to Japan's reviewers, they would complain at some things which us "westerners" like.

No one cares what your ass thinks Zanallen. And you cry about when you see I'm infinitely more intelligent or knowledgable about anything outside of your complete expertise of shoving one's own head up their ass.

I can't spend my whole day teaching people basic economics. I don't have to prove the moon is not made out of cheese. I do not have accept bogus claims by jingoist asians and asiaphiles who would rather invent history than discuss it.

That's true. Linearity is what people play FF for. No one wants to see multiple endings or optional plot lines in an FF game. They want to see another Square story. That's the only reason people keep on playing them, to see the new Square stories.

It counts for something. But there is no substitution for experiencing the [event] of [character] first hand.
