Final Fantasy is sooo boring nowadays, and it's the same concept EVERY game. It's linear, cheesy dialogue, cliche characters and story, and barely any gameplay if you consider watching a summon 50 times in an hour gameplay at all...more like an semi interactive CG movie

Here is your review, maybe it was from China :P
Still though, game sucks

lmao, despite how much I used to love the FF series, I couldn't stop from laughing at this review... :P

  • "The game is complete linearity until the open areas near the end. You can’t even backtrack."
  • "Of all the RPGs I’ve played in recent years, this is the first
which has been so linear that it’s little more than riding an amusement
    park ride."
  • "I had heard the opinion that “It’s amazing once you get to Chapter
11,” but why should you spend 20 or 30 hours on a game to get to the
only enjoyable part? Just how do they intend to make me play this? Do
they think I’m some kind of masochist?"
  • "A button mashing puzzle game with no real strategy or RPG elements
and a plethora of annoying features, game as a whole is little more
than a digital novel of sorts."
  • "For such a game to approach 2 million copies sold must be due solely to the strength of the Final Fantasy brand"
  • "biggest swindle in gaming history"
  • "biggest joke of 2009."

[*]I know, the first time I read it I was laughing non-stop....It's a tired franchise that only gets worse with age obviously

Guys, let me tell you, I was WEANED on JRPG's for most of my life, I've played Valkyrie Profile, every single FF, Dragon Warrior, Lunar Star, Chrono Trigger/Cross...

But after playing Bioware's games I feel I can't go back, Bioware has raised the bar in terms of true rpg's. Call them Western Rpg's but whatever it is its a winning formula

Toriyama and the old rpg elites are in denial, we are witnessing a paradigm shift

BTW FF12 had a horrifically dull plot and only eye candy to compensate, that is all

becomes very difficult to tell a compelling story when you're given that much freedom

Maybe they just can't tell a story without having to slap you in the face with it.

Woah Woah Woah

You can't even backtrack?

UBER FAIL.

Thats...that's...just...pathetic. Half the fun of an RPG is backtracking and getting the things you missed. O_o The mind boggles. Gah. I like Jrpgs and I'm seriously considering passing that up.

I'm not a JRPG fan, but it sure sounds like they've lost the point that a game is for players, not designers.

I've been playing Final Fantasy since the first one was released and I've grown steadily disillusioned with the franchise with each subsequent game past IX. Part of that could be trumped up to being spoiled by Bioware's excellent storylines since Baldur's Gate and part of it could be simply growing up and wanting a more complex experience for my gaming dollar. I enjoyed XII but I felt almost cheated when I beat it. It is the second FF game I did not replay (X-2 being the first lol). I simply felt SquareEnix had a lot of potential in XII and chalk it up to complacency, laziness, etc. I'm not really sure to be honest... they didn't seize that opportunity and haven't for awhile.

I even played the FF mmo for awhile. That experience in itself was enough to put me off all future FF titles. The grind was horrible, the story poorly translated, etc. Worst of all was having to deal with SquareEnix itself. Their customer service was terrible. They did nothing to help their players. It was a running joke that if you had a problem their response would always be "go **** yourself, the game is working as we intended". Even their policies were geared towards a blatant disregard of customer input. You may wonder why I played it as long as I did lol Solely for my friends.

So yes, imho, SquareEnix does have a long history of not listening to their fans or criticism in general so I am not at all surprised by that interview. lol It makes me sad that the franchise has fallen as far as it has but I feel they mostly have themselves to blame. Yes, I am a glutton for punishment and will be playing XIII... but I told myself when I beat XII that they get one more game out of me and if it isn't epic then that's it.... so we'll see in a couple of weeks.

Sorry for the wall of text but I had a lot to say on the matter lol

FF has been running on it's name alone for years now. I guarantee you if they had separate titles for all the games it wouldn't do as well as it does.

But don't think I don't enjoy some FF or JRPGs, I just get the impression that it's an audience of one.

I have an awesome idea. Instead of investing your money on a dead series, buy Parasite Eve for the ps1 and pretend it's a new Square game. :P

If you want some amusing insight into this, listen to this podcast:

It's funny because one of the editors had dinner with Toriyama and he kept asking him why Mass Effect 2 was so popular (basically, how could this game outsell Final Fantasy XIII after only 2 days). Amusing in the context of this latest statement from him.

Ugh, what time does he say that?

Don't know, but it's pretty early on.  At least in the first 30 mins.  If they actually start talking about Roguelikes, you've gone too far.

So I have this doubt.... does the "J" from JRPG stands for "Japanese" or "Junior" ?

SE is stuck in the past. Thats why.

SE has taken complacency to the extreme. They haven't innovated since FFVII. They have only thived on their characters and art design.

strongly disagree with this statement.  Though if you are just referring to the Final Fantasy franchise, maybe (though FFXII did make some large changes to combat with the Gambit system).

An enjoyable game on DS is not innovation. Mass Effect is innovation.

they know the game won't sell well, so that's why they are putting it in a special xbox 360 bundle with a 250 gb hard drive! :)

The DS game you guys are talking about isn't The World Ends with You is it? Because that game is WIN!
