I indeed did use Shake (Orientation) for the most part.

Imagine you're holding a real camera. If you stand in place while shooting something, only the the orientation (rotation) of the camera changes. Physically the camera stays where it is. If you're moving, or running around with the camera, There's going to be some level of position changing as well (up and down movement).

I'd imagine some minimal amount of sideways and/or back/forth change in position can also make sense, since the make-believe person holding the camera isn't likely to stay perfectly still. But then the sway alone seems to be doing just fine for you so maybe that'd be just overdoing it.

Just a quick question...would it be alright with you if you used a bit less of that effect? It really seems overdone to the point of dizzifying. It's a really great effect..I just don't believe it has to be used on every closeup. or at least using that effect with less "weight"..a bit more moderation and it would be really beautiful.

I don't mind the intensity of it, but it is used a bit too globally yeah. For example the opening fly-by scene of Episode 2. There shouldn't be any swaying there.

I am glad there is some agreement. There is so much excellent work being done with this, but some effects should be used in moderation. a little less swaying and shaking, and perfection can be achieved. Very hard for me to focus on expressions / reactions with all of that swaying. Don't get me wrong, it should be used. just less.

The swaying motion in the beginning was perfectly logical to me. It gave the illusion of wind, which I imagine is pretty strong up there. It makes for better immersion.

It depends what look you're going for. The whole shakycam deal emulates modern-day filming techniques, and modern-day fly-by techniques involve helicopter-mounted cameras, which wouldn't be affected by wind.

But maybe we're getting a bit too deep into details :P

On the other hand this sort of fly-by in medieval environment would be probably provided/disguised as literally "bird's view" so having some irregularity to it can make sense Posted Image

Don't get me wrong, All the cam movements in the film are really dramatic, fly by's and panning (I love those, epic)
My only qualm was the swaying that was done excessively in just about every medium or close up shot regardless of the situation. It was driving me nuts. Yes there are lots of modern day swaying in many shows. I still believe that some directors use it excessively. It is good when there is action..but not so much as to make the viewer "dizzy" especially in Close ups..and even more especially when there is no or little action...it seems needless, as the camera man theoretically doesn't move THAT much when nothing is happening around him, other than to position himself on his shot...but the swaying...just a little less is all I ask. nothing is tasteful when it is overdone.

(for example) people simply siting at a table. Some directors sway endlessly to each head, backs of others, capturing chemistry between the actors, but realistically speaking there really is no need to sway constantly. I realise some may believe it contributes to the "drama" and it might, but again I say...not TOO much. just a little would create the desired effect. It's ok to steadily focus on a character as well, and I guarantee no drama would be lost, and the viewer will regain his sense of balance.

(I'm still wondering how the "hand held" camera effect was achieved!)

There's two actions which can be added to item to achieve that -- Shake (Orientation) and Shake (Position)  I'd imagine for the hand held camera the former is more useful, as it allows to introduce semi-random sway to the focus point. It's possible to achieve the same effect by adding the Shake (Position) to the target object of the camera as well.

(this trick can also be used to add some variety to where the characters are looking, during the parts of conversation when there's pause while waiting for the player's input)

Thank you, tmp7704! That did the trick :D

More Dragon Age machinima, please!

Could you also tell us how you solved this? If you did, that is.

Kinda shaky on the light scenes. Other than that, it exceeds my expectations at this point.

Here's mine!

Nothing much but I'll keep making dry runs so I can polish the project along the way before I roll out the voice actors.

As for this pic, there was supposed to be a couple of extras behind this elf but they don't seem to appear in the final product. Is it because I used the provided headmorphs from the game's core files?

lol actually we had all the episodes finished before the 1st one even aired. :P

The way I chose to shoot it was to have more shake in scenes with impending danger such as the scenes in Ep2, since in Ep3 it's more peacetime and calmness, I reduced the shake by quite a bit. This is usually how its done in live action work as well.

I was a lot more impressed with episode 3 than the first two.

What kind of support did you get from Bioware exactly? And did you make any new animations? There are a lot of animations in there that I don't remember from the game.
