Scenario:

*On harder settings, Miranda is easily the best squaddie becausce she can strip all types of defence.

*On all settings, Jacob is rubbish.

*Jacob is boring as a person.

Suggestion:

*Swap Jacob's pull for Miranda's warp.

*Delete Jacobs voice files and replace them with random Mr T quotes ripped from youtube.

I pity the fool that doesn't like Jacob!

He'd be a lot better if he had Cryo Ammo over Incendiary Ammo.

He'd be a lot better if he didn't wear a shirt. Enemies' heads will explode the moment they see his monstrous abs.

I think they should just improve his facial animation. He looks good 'still', but once you interact with him, he gets cross-eyed and Chiclet-toothed.

As for his abilities, I agree that he needs something useful. I think he should have Overload, that is such a broadly useful power that more squaddies should have it.

I'm trying an 'I'll force myself to use Jacob' play through right now. He's fairly lethal with an M-22 Eviscerator shotgun and ranked up incendiary ammo and area pull. Unfortunately, he's much too squishy to melt faces regularly.

I suggest BioWare increase his hitpoints and/or strength of his barrier. Also, give him an assault rifle instead of a heavy pistol so he'd be a bit better at range (NPCs squadmates are awful with heavy pistols).

As for his bland personality... not sure what to do about that. I haven't played Mass Effect: Galaxy. Maybe he's actually interesting in that game (I think he's the main character).

I've actually used Jacob in most of the missions I've done on my current playthrough (Hardcore - Adept). I set him up with group Incendary ammo, which is super helpful against organic enemies (for synthetic missions, I use Tali instead of Jacob). Either way, my other squad member is always Garrus. I use Garrus for Overload to complement my own Energy Drain (bonus power). For armor, I have my Warp & Jacob's squad incendary ammo. With Barrier, Jacob has decent survivability, and offensively, I mostly use him for a pull bot. Most of my kills come from Jacob's pull combined with my Heavy Warp. If I wasn't playing as an Adept, I would use Miranda over Jacob, but for my current setup, Jacob is a very useful teammate.

I have a Contrarian Opinion here: I'm going to go so far as to say that Jacob is actually the BEST squadmate to have with you if you are playing as an assault sentinel. And if I make an assault sentinel guide, I will show you why. :)

I gave him the revanant machine gun, worked wonders. He's now a monster at mid-range, but there's better characters for close range and long range to keep the balance.

I'm assuming its because he can give you inferno ammo and his pull and your warp = boom.

Those two reasons, but especially because Incendiary ammo gives you an Additional damage bonus (on top of the normal damage bonus from each ability) against frozen enemies. And the sentinel has cryo blast...

So I guess I'll have to wait for the Cyo Engineer?

Jacob has Pull and Pull = GOD on NG+ Insanity. It has changed my Infiltrator's job to shooting away shields and armour so Jacob can make them fly like prancing ponies. In return, I save a bucketload of Widow ammunition for when I really need it and it gets things out of my face so I can shoot more, run less and keep all the cloaks for one time damage boosts. Its turning out to be invaluable on my speedruns.

Jacob is also your secret handshake bro which makes him rate highly on the awesome-o=meter.

Pull is only good to turn an almost dead enemy into an Unstable Warp bomb.  Once Pull can be used, every other power in the game can kill them quickly.  The trick is to use that soon-to-be-dead enemy to kill or injure other ones nearby.

I wouldn't go that far, but yes Jacob is awesome.
On my Soldier with Jacob and Miranda, I burst down an enemy's shields/armor with my assault rifle, then Pull+Warp creating an explosion that damages other enemies, and more importantly, knock them out of cover.

Hell, Pull's cooldown is so short I use it to keep enemies I'm shooting from ducking back behind cover. This DRAMATICALLY increases effective dps.

Finally, because Pull has one of the shortest cooldowns in the game, it's great for insta-gibbing husks.

It just baffles me how dense the player base is.  When Jacob gives the ENTIRE squad +weapon damage, just by being there, then and only then will he even come close to Miranda's usefulness.  He doesn't, so he isn't, case closed.  Miranda is the best teammate, whether you like her or not, bar none, simply by virtue of what she brings to the table just by being there.

Jacob is really useful. I bring him on any mission with husks: shotgun + inferno ammo + pull = dead husks. He's a bit squishy, but so is everyone except grunt. If he looks like he's going down, make him use barrier to refill his shields.

Sure, once an enemies defense are stripped, they're almost toast, but intelligently using Jacob's pull instead of wasting one of your own powers is a good way to clear a weakened enemy from the battlefield so you can focus on someone new (usually if you pull an enemy, your squaddies will finish them off). Remember, even with a sliver of health left, an enemy still hits for full damage.

How is he better than Jack exactly? I know Jack is another squad member many people seem to dislike but she should be better, for what ever purpose you think Jacob is good, unless it involves barrier. Anyway imo he is good for an adept or sentinel since he got pull. Once i got samara i never use him anymore though, but until that, i use him all the time, with squad incendiary rounds.

One, the topic isn't Jacob vs. Miranda.  It's mostly just a Jacob thread.

Two, I don't think anyone is debating that Miranda is a great all-purpose character with her ability to strip all defenses and passive bonuses, but in some cases bringing a specialized character is better.

Three, if Average Gatsby says he has a reason for choosing Jacob over Miranda, I'm going to take his word for it.  He's proven that he's pretty good at this game with his excellent Adept tutorials and the Cryo Engineer montage.  Calling him dense reflects poorly on you.

Go with Inferno Rounds, not Squad Incendiary... they blow up and hit nearby enemies.  It's like shooting an Incineration Blast with every bullet.  He's basically more durable than Jack.  He gets barrier and a higher health bonus with each class rank.  I use him for missions with lots of melee enemies like Husks and Varren.  He's great at stripping their armor and a well timed pull can save himself, Shep or your other squad mate if they get rushed.

Agreed. I am playing an Assault Sentinel on Insanity now, and I take Jacob on nearly every mission. Squad Incendiary Ammo + Pull Field + recharges his own shields + frequent use of Cryo Blast on my part? Yes, please.
