I'm having trouble with targetting AoEs as a mage.  In particular, I can't scroll back far enough to get a nice range on my medium range Aoes and often hit my own party.  Cones are also irritating, as you wait for a few units to hit range, cast, wait for it to cast and people to take damage while your stupid warrior gets in the way.

I'm seriously considering abandoning primal and going entropy, but I read that many here have had success with stacking AoEs.

Can anyone help with my targetting problems?

I found Cone of Cold really useful if you set your mage in position to intercept the incoming enemies and lead the targets since the cast takes a second. Your mage has to be mobile to get the best angle.

And AoE stacking is amazing. Earthquake + Blizzard + Tempest = Brutal natural catastrophe for groups of enemies. ^_^

I am having a blast with primal, Cone of Cold is simply amazing. You can always Pause to target them assuming its on the PC, sometimes you can also target farther in the 3d view rather then the 'strategy' view. (Sometimes the reverse it true as well)

Setting your party tactics up for your play style may work well too, are they running ahead into your Blizzards? Or are you just blasting a clump of poeple with a cone spell?

One trick is to send your tank into the middle, let him get some threat, then throw Force Field on him and use all of your AoE. He'll be invulnerable while everything around him dies. If there's anything left you can then cast Crushing Prison on him for the Shockwave combo, knocking everything around him down and freeing him from Force Field to mop them up. It's also helpful to keep groups away from the tank and focus them down with AoE. There's plenty of spells to facilitate this, including Cone of Cold, Blizzard, Grease, Glyph of Repulsion, the Glyph of Repulsion + Glyph of Paralyze combo, Sleep, etc.

As for positioning in general, I agree it's kind of a pain. There's two basic problems. First, BioWare didn't do a very good job on the isometric camera as you can't scroll out far enough and you can't move the screen making proper positioning difficult or impossible using it. Second, since it's often impossible to use isometric, you're forced to use third person, at which point the targeting constantly trying to snap to a target on the battlefield is a real impediment. Since there's usually a plethora of targets it's difficult to get it located on the ground where you want it without there being a target in the way that it snaps to instead.

The Force field - cage combo sounds interesting... I am disappointed by the Sleep -> Horror one :(

Grease + Inferno is brutal.
