I think what you guys are missing is that plan =/= result. Maybe BioWare did that to cover their bases and decided in the end that, given Thane's backstory, it would be a long shot trying to justify a turn. If it had been mentioned that he experimented in his youth, had a prior male lover, or so on, it probably would have stayed. But you have to look at things from a writer's perspective, and when you do, you realize that it does not make a lot of sense.
Is it disappointing? For some, I'm sure. I know I was when I heard about the Tali/FShep thing. Same thing with the FShep/Ashley thing from ME1. But I can see why they didn't go with it, and understand it. I don't think they completely shut the door with Tali, either, being that they left a bunch of bicurious dialogue in the final game, though I suppose that could be just the forum conspiracy theorist in me reading too much into it.

Really my M!Shep is in the same boat. Except he has no one to get any from.

How do you know he was talking about another man? He could have just as easily been making small talk, and was pining for a female companion.
Personally I never saw any thing in game that suggested that Thane was interested in male Shep for anything other than friendship.
