At the end of the game, after the credits have stopped scrolling, you are given a choice to continue the game with the current character (presumably to finish up whatever quests you hadn't completed prior to the Grand Finale) or Importing the character into a new game or possibly ME3.  If you Continue to play on, does that mean that the current character will NOT be available for a new game or ME3?  Is there a way to Continue on and then formally retire the character, awaiting ME3?  From what I've seen in post-Grand Finale, there is NO procedure to say, "Okay, I'm done with this character" other than to simply stop playing him/her.

No, you can still do New Game+ with a character that you choose to continue after the ending with.

My understanding is that the Continue option exists so that you can grab whatever DLC comes out later, and that the character will be importable into ME3 in whatever state he exists in your last save for him.

The text box is just ceremonial. All that means is "this save is now acceptable for import"

Thanks, people. I read the options box at the end and it read like it was an either/or.

I do wish though that when you import more than one char you get more details behind each save files. When I go to start up a new ME2 game using the import feature I never know which is which. It just says 00 John Shepard, 01 John Shepard, or 02 John Shepard. I wouldn't mind having some metadata...

And you can import any save *after* completion. So if you missed 10 missions, and do them during Continue, you can import -that- game as NG+. No reason not to continue if you missed anything.

Started another game, importing the character from my first runthrough. Now, your ending level/XP carries over. Your available weapons carry over. Your available armor carries over. Your mix of skills and powers carry over. Pretty much _everything_ that defines what kind of person Shepard ended as. EXCEPT the Paragon and Renegade points did NOT carry over. Why pretty much everything else, but NOT the measure of behavior for that character? Since it requires some seriously high Paragon or Renegade levels to get certain dialog choices, why do **those** have to start from scratch?

You can actually import any post-game save, now. It's a different system to the 'secret save' thing that was used for ME1.
