Ok, before I start let me say that with the exception of my 1 renegade and 1 "paragade" Shepard, all my other Shepards are Paragon.  So this is coming from an all-loyal, all paragon perspective.

So I just finished ME2 for the third time today, and I was thinking about the characters and who might/ might not be returning for ME3.  I hope that the majority of ME2's characters return, as well as Liara, Wrex (if alive), and Ashley/Kaiden.

So assuming that everyone survives the suicide mission, with all team members loyal, this is what I think will probably happen:

Returning squad members:

Garrus and Tali: They have been with Shepard since the very beginning.  There really isn't anywhere left for them to go.  Garrus is done with C-Sec and his "vigilante" days.  Even if Tali was not exiled, she would probably be more inclined to stay with Shepard (especially if she was your LI).  Both Garrus and Tali are pretty much best friends with Shepard, so I can't see them leaving.

Miranda and Jacob: Assuming you make the Paragon choice and destroy the Collector base, you basically cut ties with Cerberus and tell TIM to shove it.  Miranda and Jacob follow you, so now they have nowhere to go but stay with Shepard.  Maybe the Alliance will make them honorary Marines.  Whatever happens, I think they are staying with Shepard and the Normandy.

Grunt: He chose Shepard as his Battlemaster, so he is somewhat tied to Shepard.  He may chose to return to clan Urdnot to help Wrex rebuild and unify the Krogan race, but Grunt seems to care more about fighting and less about diplomacy, so he would probably remain with Shepard.

Mordin: He understands what Shepard is doing is highly important, and aknowledges that the Collectors were only working for the true enemy: the Reapers.  I expect we will see him back in the tech lab for ME3.

Legion: I really don't know with Legion, but if I had to guess I would say he is staying with Shepard.  I use "he" for lack of a better term...maybe...they?  All Geth are connected so Legion doesn't necessarily have to rejoin the Geth physically for him to communicate and be with them, and whatever Shepard decides to do with the heretics, the Geth still oppose the Reapers.  Legion even says that the Geth are against the "Old Machines".  So its a toss up, but I would bet that Legion will be returning in ME3, hopefully with a larger role.

Non-returning squad members:

Zaeed: I don't see any reason for Zaeed to stay.  In his words, "I'll do what I was paid to do, nothing more and nothing less."  It would be interesting to run accross him in ME3, but I doubt he will remain on the Normandy.

Thane: He has less than a year to live.  Personally, I would really like to see Thane stay, but unless ME3 takes place within a year of ME2, I don't think it will be likely.

Samara: Another character I would really want to stay, since she is a cazy biotic and for the most part Paragon.  However, I'm pretty sure she will return to her Justicar duties.  But again, I'd love to see her stay on the Normandy.

Jack: She's an unstable crazy lady with anger issues.  She may stick with Shepard for the mission, but I doubt (even if she was a LI) that she would stick around.  She'll probably just wander off to cause some ruckus somewhere.

Thoughts?

Seems pretty close. However, I see Mordin leaving and working on the genophage cure.

I think your guesses are good, if Bioware doesn't somehow make all the survivors stay...
