Engineers dime-a-dozen

Adept - unique power singularity
Vangaurd - unique power charge
Soldier - unique power adrenaline rush
Infiltrator - unique power cloak
Engineer - common power combat drone
Sentinel - unique power tech shield
Of all the classes Engineer is the only class who's "unique" power is possessed by your teamates, two infact. Both Tali and Legion have access to the same class defining power, combat drone. I find it makes an Engineering primary character a bit redundant, I'm really not able to bring anything new to the table.

Charge, Adrenaline and Cloak: Would not work on squaddies.
Tech Armor: Made redundant by Barrier and the like.
Singularity is the only one that really has no reason to be absent.

I get the feeling people tend to overlook the Engineer because they use Tali/Legion's drone and think thats all there is to it.

Hey bring Tali & Legion and find some Ai to hack. 9 on 1 LOL.

I agree with the positive comments. Having just finished an Insanity playthrough with an Engineer (getting that achievement and also the "no one left behind" one!), I wouldn't have wanted to try it with any other class. If I recall correctly, aside from the much shorter cooldown, the player's drone seemed to distract enemies more reliably than Tali or Legion. So against e.g. those Harbingers, player drone, then attack while it's distracted, repeat (no good against Scions or Praetorians, of course!).
Drone is awesome against Praetorians! It gets confused between Shepard and the Drone, and eye lazers between them both, but doing no damage. It's amazing. Try it sometime!

Praetorians will only turn its attention to the drone for a brief second when it get zapped, then it's right back at you with full beam blast, so hopefully that's enough time for you to get to the next cover.
That is my experience as well.

I like that your squadmates have the combat drone. Having 3 drones running around is hilarious.
But the Engineer is not just made up of the drone. The other powers are important as well, whereas other classes seem to rely more on their class power.

Then engineers would be a bit more unique because only Tali would have the (inferior) version of Combat Drone.

Engineer is the only class I really do not like. I have not even finished the game (level 24, right before IFF) as an Engineer, just cannot get mysef to play this class. Drone is nice and all, but it feels like it does the job for you, what fun is that. Just my 0.02$.
I will have to disagree with this. The drone doesn't have the health nor deals enough damage to "do the job for you." It serves as a distraction and a form of control, much like singularity. Engineer's not for everyone and I felt that Bioware did a great job at making 6 distinct classes that have their own unique playstyle. However, if you wouldn't mind, could you tell me what exactly you do while playing the Engineer? Perhaps you're not using the class to its full potential or that you picked a complicated build? The Engineer, for me, is the most enjoyable class I played on both games.

I dunno, play with them both, throw three drones onto the field, hack three geth, and you have a 9-man army.
I had a blast doing that on legion's loyalty mission.

-Drone to tank/distract
-Incenerate for damage
-Cryoblast for Crowd Control.
Then use SMGs, pistols for regular dps?
How does the Engineers kill speed, survivability, versatility compare to that of other classes. I think part of the problem with Engineers is that it's hard to figure out how they play just by reading the class description.

Okay, so this is how it works.
Drone's role as an Engineer is very important. It not only distracts the target you choose, but also explodes, dealing 100 damage (if you choose explosive drone.) This is very effective when you choose to spam it on Harbinger, YMIR Mechs, Krogans etc. The purpose for the drone isn't to run the game for you, but to control one target as you and your squad picks off another. It is important use the drone on targets that are probably most threatening such as Asari mercs, Collector Guardians or the bosses I named off just a second ago.
Incinerate is probably your top damage dealing power, yet it's only effective in certain situations, particularly organics that have just armor or are on their health bar. Using Incinerate against mechs is hardly going to have any influence and you're probably better off using Overload on them.
Cryo's purpose is very situational but can prove to be very effective nontheless. It's only effective if the target is on their health bar. A target that's frozen takes more damage, allowing you to pick off the targets more quickly in the process. If you're finding yourself overwhelmed and you're unable to find the time to shatter a frozen target, then it also serves its purpose as a CC by disabling the target for 5 seconds.
I find that the kill rate for an Engineer is pretty fast depending on the mission and the squad members you take with you. For example, bringing Garrus and Zaeed with me to Tali's recruiting mission went quickly. Garrus and I used overload and Zaeed had his disruptor ammo. Bringing Mordin and Grunt with me to IFF made things easy as well. Mordin and I had incinerate and Grunt had incendiary ammo. I would say that the Engineer is slightly more dependent on his squad than a lot of other classes, but tends to become a very powerful class as a result. Definately my favorite class in both games.
EDIT: I'm in the process of contemplating an Engineer guide once I get over being sick and can actually concentrate. Hopefully I will have it up in a couple days.

Now, even withouth those as squaddies, who first said Engineer would be the weakest??
*points laughing to pre-release threads with worries about Engineer being weakest*
Me thinks Engineer is the most tactical and or interesting of them all
