Ive seen a few threads recently about people saying how useless vangaurds and it bother me.

I have beaten the game with a Vanguard, a solder, and infiltrator, and a sentinel on INSANITY

and let me say this flat out from experience to settle this.

Vanguards are the SECOND best class in the game hands down. The reason is because charge is easily the best skill in the game. It is better than every other barrier skill because it has HALF the cool down and can be spammed constantly to keep you alive. Charge gives you lots of shields!

Shotguns DO NOT suck. IF you actually learn to use charge and don't miss with your shotgun you can literally use nothing else for 80% of the game. All it takes is one shotgun blast and a bunch to kill any standard infantry and two shots to kill medium ranked troops (Shotguns can still get head shots).

Any of you who doubt the Vanguards viability on insanity need to invest the time to get heavy charge and then sit back in awe at how easy the game becomes because nothing can kill you and you can flank enemies so easily.

Like the rest, it's all about playing style. For example, if you can't aim worth ****, of course you're going to suck with an Infiltrator or Soldier.

I don't care which is better. Its a single-player game, for crying out loud. All I know is, between Shotguns, Charge and Shockwave, the Vanguard is a TON of fun.

I think the difference is that Charge is a lot less obvious about how one would use it properly. I think it might also require a bit more skills with shooter games to be really good with the Vanguard. I love my vanguard though, no other class has such exciting gameplay!

We know they don't suck they just play with death more than other classes. And i would list them 3rd after playing every class. Sentinel is definitely best seriously you cant die, i also think infiltrator is better they just owns up the place with a widow and is the only class who can clear places at a pace even close to the vanguards, plus they are much safer. If you know what your doing vanguard becomes ridiculously powerful in the later parts of the game though.

Vangaurds are fine...when charge works.

Seems like 30% of the time i try to use it i just glow blue then stand out in the open. 5% of the time i sling shot back to my original position. The two times i tried to use it to get out of bad situations it flat out wouldnt work.

The power need to be fixed so it works consistently. ATM its too annoying.

And Infiltrators and soldier are far more powerful imo.

Vanguard are definitely the most fun class to play, but like GrimmTruth said, charge sometimes doesn't work. Adept (still) is the most powerful class in me2. Singularity gives you complete control over the battlefield. And when enemies start flying around, use warp to finish them off. Its possible to complete the game on insanity without using guns.

Infiltrators are the most powerful simply because they have the Cloak. They can get away from enemies, apply massive damage, and sneak past certain situations with the press of a button. They might not be as destructive as a Soldier/Vanguard but those two classes don't have a 100% sure fire way to survive an encounter.

I was so wrong when I dropped my vanguard to play adept and sentinel. Though the later 2 are fun, I recently went back to play the vanguard on hardcore. With well placed charge, my cmdr shepard is a powerhouse! and those pesky enemies can dream about trying to catch him in their scopes...LOL! Christina Norman did say something in the VG intro vid that it is a tactical class. It is true. You have to think and look at the battlefield a bit more...find the correct and best position (or target) and charge there. It's like chess when playing the VG.

Just finished a game playing as Vanguard Shep for the first time (been mostly playing as soldier and infiltrator before that), and it has been the most fun and challenging class to play so far. Thanks to Shotgun + heavycharge
I hope the charge ability comes back for the next game. It's definately an improvement over the vanguard in the first game and seeing your enemies fly off the ledge is just pure bliss.  I think the reason why people have trouble with it is because its a class that works well when you use your powers, rather than just simply shooting like the soldier class.

Holy old threads, Batman!

I have a blast playing a Vanguard. Sometimes I wish there were Vanguard combo points a la Arkham Asylum...

Infiltrators are useless.  I wish they weren't I love the class, but they have become completely outclassed by Soldiers.

Adrenaline Rush gives twice the damage boost of Assassination Cloak, and can apply that bonus for multiple shots.

Cloak also isn't a sure fire way to survive, since your shields and health don't regen, and as enemies shoot at your moronic AI henchmen, they'll still hit you.  Just hiding behind cover is frequently a better way to survive.

And now the Soldiers get the stupid Mattock, pushing their damage even further above the Infiltrators, and making them easily the best sniping class in the game.

I've played a sentinel, and began half way with a infiltrator, and I keep trying to play a soldier....but I'm just too in love with biotics....

so sentinel and vanguard are my fav classes

It is pretty cool how the general opinion changes over time though.

It's sad, really. My first few run throughs were Inf. and I absolutely loved it. But I have to agree with this. My soldier runthrough was rediculously easy with the original weapons. I had more fun with the adept, and was better protected and thus hid less as a sentinel.

VG is the only one i haven't played and that's mainly due to my overall dislike of the shotties. No insult to those that like the class, i just can't get the hang of the shotties :(

But, inf. is now my least favorite. I even tried another run through, unlocked everything via coalesced, and really didn't get beyond Garus's mission as the second one. That playthrough was deleted and I kept a tear for the class in a glass vial as a reminder to never play it again.

It just completely fails at it's class name as you can't effectively use cloak beyond one shot. And since the AI automagically knows where you are once you uncloak, it does nothing to create a sneaker class which is what it should be.

I guess I'll have to give VG a run just to be sure Inf. really is now my last/worst class to play.

Vanguard is fun, down and dirty. up close and personal. First time I did a charge/shotgun combo was the first time I felt truly satisfied with a games gun combat.

Sentinel almost makes the game too easy.

Adept is nice but it leaves taking down the shields, but then you get all the biotics... I love me some biotics. :)

Christina Norman said Vanguards were the most fun class(in her opinion). I agree with her.

All I ever play now are Vanguards. Hell, to see me in action with the new Firepower weapons, check these out-

I completely agree about the Vanguard. It's mad fun.

Too bad Charge does not always work. Vanguards are at a major disadvantage then.

I'm not sure which bonus weapon you should pick as a Vanguard anymore. Claymore is awesome, but I'm beginning to think it might be insane to train yourself to hit multiple people with the GPS, in which case it does more damage.

I've had that a couple of those times...yay auto saves!! Certainly leaves you open, I guess its kind of a risk/rewards kinda thing.

Yeah but it's the bad risk/reward kinda thing if there's no good reason it doesn't work :)

Anyway the coolness of the Vanguard in my opinion comes from it forcing you to play agressively. You survive if you keep charging to the right places. It doesn't reward hiding behind cover but rather charging all over the place and blasting people away. Very cool.

Yup, and their armor setups look the coolest in the whole game.
