You can still kill everyone from behind cover. But if you want to have fun and live or die like a champ, you've gotta just run around and Charge away like I did.

I like Vanguards because of how unique a gameplay experience they provide. What bothers me is that a Vanguard must rely on his or her squad mates to strip defenses. That isn't such a terrible thing, but I like doing it myself.

You only need one thing to strip enemies off their defences. The Claymore! Charging unprotected enemies is boring, maybe a nice finisher, but the most of the time, you should be charging the guys anyway, regardless on whether they have defences or not. Shotgun-to-the-face and the problem is dealt with. That is what Vanguards are about, ... the personal touch!

The Claymore isn't something I'd bring on most missions from what I've seen of it. I'd much rather the Eviscerator.

Playing as a Vanguard with Viking themed metal as the sound track pushed ME2 from 9 to a 10 in fun factor for me. The funny thing is I'm usually not that keen on Viking Metal.

Why? I use it at least 90% of the time, Locust is used for the rest - distant unchargeable targets. No other weapons are needed. Claymore is useless on lower difficulties (too much damage) but on Insanity, it is a beast. One shot, one kill. Some people prefer this or that shotgun, it just comes down to personal preference, but Claymore is great in all situations too.

As for stripping defenses? What for. Claymore kills them anyways. I never strip defenses and very rarely use squadmates. Aggressive Vanguards usually solo everything.

I'm just not very good at close-quarters combat, which is why my main class is not Vanguard(it's Sentinel). When I get around to playing Mass Effect 2 Vanguard in greater detail than I have, odds are I'll play it the way it was meant to be played.

A good advice for you. Read the Vanguard Guide and then force yourself to as aggressively as you can imagine and charge as often as you can. I had to do so too, since I am more of a precision shot dude, pop out of cover, one or two headshots between the eyes and back into cover.
You'll die quite some times in the beginning (Especially the Intro-Mission on Freedom's Progress) but once you got the hang of it, it's a great style of playing this game.
