Anyway, enough of my open world rant, and back to JRPGs. Personally, when I was around 11 or 12 years old, I was obsessed with Final Fantasy VIII and X, however, as I reached my later teens, my attention span seemed to shrink. As much as I liked what I've played of XII and X-2, I stopped around halfway through both of them, they just got too stale. Same with a couple DS remakes and the like.

Uh, you mean everything JRPGs have done has been copied from WRPGs?
*facepalms*
Neither side copied everything from the other. That's just plain common sense. They may have used the others ideas as templates (and in some cases blantantly copied) but WRPGs didn't take all their stuff from JRPGs or vice versa.
Honestly get off of that argument its retarded.
It's not retarded, it's factual. Using someone's idea as a template is, uhh, COPYING.
....
*sighs*
So if you use information from a website to form a thesis you're copying? Really? <_< If you use the data from the website expand on it with other data from other websites and add your own ideas to make something different but still has the same basic information you've copied the website. Good to know. I somehow managed to not flunk for plagarism.
You have to properly cite someone in an academic paper. And if I started my English paper with "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times" i'm probably getting an F.

Right because citing someone as a reference and citing a direct quote are the same exact thing?
You write a paper quote the whole thing and turn that in and see how that goes.

Yes, this is about what I was trying to get at, thank you.krylo wrote...
The only difference between the two methods of story telling isn't in how deep the STORY is but in how deep the CHARACTERIZATION is. In JRPGs one can get a much deeper characterization for their main character, because in WRPGs there is no characterization for the main character past what the player adds. On the other hand, the ability for the player to act upon and react to the various other characters in the game in multiple and often wildly divergent ways allows for all other characters to gain a greater depth of characterization.

Do you role play in Oblivion and Fallout 3? Yes, yes you do. A lot.
Honestly, it's not that simple. If we're going by that definition, Zelda is an RPG, Halo is an RPG, Uncharted is an RPG, hell COD is an RPG; virtually every game thrusts you into the role of a specific character as events unfold around you. While it's also not as complex as some make it out to be, definining an RPG just isn't that simple. To me an RPG is a game that lasts me a minimum of 15 hours, contains dialogue, branching story paths, and customization. To someone else an RPG may just be an adventure, to others simply customization, to others puzzles and dialogue, to each his own.

Not to mention that Ray has said a lot of the same things in defense of ME2. It being a game with a predefined protagonist and not having as many options and so on and so forth.
