Nope, it's not that simple. I've had to
redo log-ins multiple times on PC because it thinks I'm not authorized
to use the DLC. It's not a one-time authentication, there is some kind
of periodic check.

It does check every time you're online, but if you don't log in it never checks.

There is no DRM in DAO aside from a simple disc check and one-time activation for DLC (the vanilla game doesn't ever need to go online - not once).

By the time EA shuts down the servers you will have moved on to dragon age 3d and you will be swatting darkspawn with natal or some other future wonder and all will be well.

I never move on.  The first thing I do whenever I get a new computer or upgrade my OS is spend some time (last time it took about 30 hours of work) figuring out how to get Baldur's Gate to run.

Given how much hassle it was under Vista, I'm afraid to try Windows 7.

Already there, PC is the only way to go. I just remember loading the game up offline and it'd tell me certain things may not be accesible or some grabage like that. I don't know.

Well prior to shutting down ..they would give us a month's notice, ...I think in that time there would be adjustments made so that you could continue to play the game offline.

I sometimes get logged off...get a message I was disconnected from the servers, I don't consider it a problem, I just keep playing til the next time I need to log out. I am on a PC ..I don't encounter authorization problems. Have reinstalled the game about 4 times due to other issues, and my dlc content is always there in the download section when I go to create new characters.

If they ever shut down servers you will receive an anti-online protection patch or... simply download a crack, that is even better as it let you use EVERY DLC available! It applies to PC but XBOX 360 can be "modified" with almost the same result... Sorry for PS3 users - they are scr**ed.

The only things I've had to do to get BG work on Windows 7 was to install the nVidia graphics patch thing and get adjusted to that my monitor is now 16:10 instead of 4:3, making everything horribly stretched.

Use the widescreen mod from http://www.gibberlings3.net/

they'll probably update the game to make it run without a server check, this is what they have done in the past, so i wouldn't worry about it too much.

I play logged off all the time, since for some reason I can't connect to my account most of the time ( I get timed out apparently) and all my DLC works (shale, that belt thingy, Soldiers peak and return to ostagar). So honestly I can't see the problem.

I think some clarification is needed and it is a legit concern. Yesterday during the downtime of EA servers people with the xbox version could not play any of their saved games that had DLC content cause the game could not access the EA server to get the verifcation needed. Basically, it said could not access server and then the title screen kinda was frozen as it was blank with no menu.

His concern is if/when that server shuts down will the game be useless unless you are gonna play the vanilla game ie no awakening, no stone prisoner, no return to ostagar.

That is the question and concern from what happening during the early hours on 2/16/10.

My game hasn't been able to connect to the DAO severs since late November which is another issue i have but now it won't let me play the game i push start and it goes to connecting to sever then gets the error and then has a blank screen where i can't do anything... I can't even attempt to load a save

but yes the above post is correct I know i will be able to play the game again but i am wondering down the line what will happen with this game

I get an error and get kicked off the server a lot, and it does not affect the game or the DLC.

Are you sure have the DAupdater service running and set to automatic?

BG or BG2?  Getting BG2 running was easy, because it was actually designed for DirectX.

BG used DirectDraw, which isn't even enabled by default in Vista.  I had to figure out how to turn it on.

What will happen? One of two things:

1) All online checks are disabled and all DLC is resigned to being added in manual patch form (similar to ME2 DLC for the PC, I don't know how it'd work on the 360 - Maybe a disc) like Bungie/MS did for Halo 2.

2) You don't get to play the game without cracking the files.

Either way, it won't be happening for many years and as such you're wasting time and energy fretting about it. We'll be playing bigger, better and more immersive games and Dragon Age will be but a faint memory...

BG1. I don't play much with BG2.

Typically, the widescreen patch runs into some issues. :? Probably a no-cd patch issue or something.
