I was just thinking about how, no matter what the outcome of ME2, you'd be able to have a situation with at least some of your squad mates.

So far, I've only thought of one for Mordin.
Whether he lives or dies at the suicide mission, you still end up going to his funeral. He's old, he's bound to die soon anyways.
Then, while you're there, you meet his "uber-smart" nephew, who wishes to continue what his uncle did.

Bada-bing, bada-boom. Works no matter what, ties into ME2 dialog, and sets up a new possible squad mate.

Any other ideas? I know there'd be a good setup for Thane, but I can't think of one right now.
