Must... resist... urge... to post link: http://social.biowar...orial#Exteriors
Anyway, this might help if somebody else finds themselves in the same boat and searches the forum (if that works).

Do I to insert the textures for each and every new level? I can't figure out how to save my texture palette.

Me neither. The terrain editor seems weaker than NWN2's at first glance. It doesn't look like you can colour the terrain, either, without using a diffuse material texture for each colour - eating up the supposed three overlapping textures limit or the eight materials palette limit.

We can only use 8 textures? Youch.
I keep hearing about a preview mode, but I can't find where to acess it. Any idea? I'd hate to make an entire level, create it into an area, then test it only to find that everything feels too small / large / there's a big piece of nothingness visible in the landscape.

I'd have to assume that's just per level. I don't see another way to add a second palette to the same level. I don't want to get texture-crazy or paint rainbows on my landscapes, but I guess I can make do.
