Having just been promoted, Damara decided to celebrate by vacationing with her friends on Elysium. As luck would have it, she picked the exact week the slavers decided to attack. She left her companions in the hotel they were staying at, since it's centrialized location and garden walls let itself to being defensible, and ran to assist the marines who were defending the colony, sending every civilian she passed on the way back to said hotel. After some, as she puts it; "daring heroics", they held the enemy forces off long enough for reinforcements to arrive. Laid up in a hospital for the following few months, she was about to be sent back to her unit on Akuze when news of the Maw attack reached Alliance Command.

2. Zabaleta was the one who pulled her out of the wreckage of her destroyed home.  Zabaleta made it his mission to see that Sadie was taken care of in the aftermath, and he was her main inspiration to join the Alliance.  They still keep in touch periodically through birthday and Christmas cards, random emails, etc.

3. Her dad (Anthony Shepard, Sr.) used to work building ships before settling on Mindoir and he always loved them.  He loved to build model ships.  Sadie started collecting them because it reminds her of her father.

Fun Facts:
1.)  Kate was engaged to a member of her squad on Akuze. His name was
Daniel McCray, the squad mechanic. When the first thresher maws burst
from the ground, the Mako he had been working on was thrown on top of
him, crushing him. Kate was devastated and has never managed to get
over losing him and the future they had planned together.

2.) Kate's love life is complicated.  After her fiance died, she was *with* a lot of guys but never serious with anyone.  Kaidan was the closest she's come to another real relationship, but she viewed Horizon as a definite break-up.  Jacob was just a friends-with-benefits thing.  She's unconsciously drawn towards Joker, though, and that's who she will end up with in the end... hopefully in ME3, or just in Fanfiction Land if there's no Joker romance.

3.) She blames herself for Jacob's death, since it was her call to put Miranda in charge of the biotic bubble.  Miranda blames herself as well, and both women were unconsciously drawn towards each other in an effort to fill the void after Jacob's death.  He was a stabilizing presence for both of them, and in his absence they ended up clinging to each other and becoming close friends.

More details:
Starskin was born and raised in the streets of Earth running with the Reds.  Using an old abandoned sniper rifle and tech skills she was the look out and hacker for her gang though eventualy she led her own little crew within the reds. If they killled it had to be other gang members and she refused to let the members of her crew steal so much as to ruin the lives of thier victims. When some of the higher ranking gang members thought she might be too soft and confronted her she put a bullet in each one of thier heads and noone ever brought it up again. Her experience made it so she knew when to play nice and when to play hard and quick with both her head and her gun.

When she turned 18 she joined the allience and convinced many other members of her crew to join her. While most when their own way some of her crew were always close by, including her mission on Akuze. When the thresher maw attacked she saw her entire unit, including many of her childhood friends, killed despite her efforts. When the thresher maw came for her she ran into a nearby tempory building and sealed herself in. The thresher maw slamed into it tossing the structure with her in it. The thresher maw lost intrest and left leaving her severly injured but still alive. Despite her injuries shel used the scope of her sniper rifle to see if any one else had surrvived the attack until rescue arrived.

Personal History: Colonist/War Hero
After being orphaned at the age of sixteen by batarian slavers attacking Mindoir and being rescued by an Alliance patrol, Daniel Shepard was raised in a Jesuit mission on that world until the age of eighteen, when he enlisted in Systems Alliance Marines. 
 
Noted from boot camp as an exceptional Marine with extraordinary potential, Shepard was steered towards the Fleet-22 commissioning program. As a part of that program, he attended Duke University on Earth, where he received his Bachelors in Applied Electronics, and his Masters in Artificial Intelligence, graduating with honors.
 
After receiving his commission as an officer, Shepard applied for and was accepted to the N7 Special Operations training program, Sniper/Infiltrator subspecialty. His proficiency scores were first rate in all fields and, to this day, he holds the N7 marksmanship record.
 
Shepard was on regular shore leave on Elysium during Skyllian Blitz. When batarian ground forces threatened to overrun the colony, Shepard rallied fellow Marines and even local civilians into a force to repulse the attackers.  He then personally held a key strategic bunker against impossible odds, buying his makeshift militia and the colony’s garrison precious time to get organized and counter-attack, subsequently driving the batarians back into space (and into the waiting arms of the SSV Agincourt). 
 
For his actions on Elysium, Shepard earned the Parliamentary Medal of Valor, the Alliance’s highest possible award for military service. 
 
Psychological/Professional Profile:
An officer of the highest caliber whose combat skills literally border on the superhuman, Shepard has shown the consistent ability to achieve results far exceeding command expectations, even in the most dire scenarios, often in the face of overwhelming odds. Former teammates, commanding officers and subordinates alike, all speak of him in the highest possible terms.
 
Professional honor and personal integrity are keystone aspects of Daniel Shepard’s personality. If he is ever forced to choose between the two the results would be impossible to predict, save for one aspect: the body count will be high. Woe unto whoever tries to force Daniel Shepard into making such a choice.
 
Daniel Shepard has a very relaxed, informal style of command. He is known to regard even long established standards of military courtesy as “useless posturing”, going so far as to remove his rank insignia and have those under his command to do the same. This unorthodox, iconoclastic attitude, while almost anathema in The Fleet, serves Shepard well in the close knit world of Special Operations.
