Back to the topic, considering his exotic, regal appearance and desire to kill of the Old Gods, I'd say he might be one of the ancient Tevinter Magisters. I've only read a summary of The Calling from dragonagewiki.com, so I don't have the nuanced information that a person who's read it would, though.
That would be a cool twist that would actually kind of confirm some of the plot lines developed with the religion established in this universe

Darkspawn are considered soulless husks...so dead I suppose. But what gives them energy to move around..kill etc if so?

Two things I wish to comment on:
First, The Architect is a really cool villian/character. Having read The Calling, I want to see more of him.
Second, I really want to play a Tevinter mage. We don't know a whole lot about the current state of the Empire other than their religion, they still have slavery, and there's war with the Qunari, but the Imperium holds a great interest to me. Second most interested nation would be Nevarra.

The Architect looks... odd. Not at all how I remember him/it being described in The Calling. When he first appeared, I thought he was some kind of abomination. Did he get possessed along the way?
Well, he has his hand back as well, so I'm guessing he messed with his looks with his unique magic.

Trees also lack souls, are they dead?

I was under the impression that most all of them used to be mortals; hurlocks are former humans, genlocks were dwarves, shriekers were elves and ogres were qunari. I think. Or was that just the Broodmothers that spawn them?
Just the broodmothers that spawn them.
Tainted mortals are supposed to become ghouls.. but there are discrepancies in the lore. An infected elf from the Dalish Origin actually turns into a shriek.

Also, wasn't that broodmother in the game once a dwarf female? That's why they kept the female dwarves alive? The whole 10 days rhyme.

How do you know? Did you ask them? Do insects have a soul? Where does ''having a soul'' begin and where does it end?
I imagine darkspawn have a little bit of ''soul left'', if you attack the darkspawn forces in Denerim in the final battle you can see in the cutscenes different behavior of darkspawn.

She was just making the point that no soul=/= dead. The soul is a question of philosophy and/or theology, so that discussion could go anywhere.
Edit: Even in DA it could go anywhere, Gray wardens believe darkspawn have no souls, but what about the Architect? Have to find out I suppose...

wait, so the architect is not the only darkspawn that talks? so who's the other skelly guy?
He could be a high ranking Hurlock. Strong Hurlocks are capable of human speech after all.

Grey Warden transform into darkspawn some day in their life through the blood they consume at the joining ritual.
It is such a Grey Warden.

When I'm done with them, yes, they would have to be considered quite dead.
These darkspawn are no more! They've ceased to be! They've expired and gone to meet their maker! They're stiffs! Bereft of life, they rest in peace! If I hadn't hung them from the castle walls, they'd be pushing up the daisies! They're metabolic processes are now history! They're off the twig! They've kicked the bucket, they've shuffled off their mortal coil,
run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile! These are ex-darkspawn!

My human noble would be willing to figure out his motivations, but my dwarf noble will probably have more of a stab first, ask questions later policy.

I'm interested in eventually speaking with The Architect and finding out what his plans and goals are.
You and me too! I have been totally trying to piece together the story, who the more hurlock looking talking darkspawn is, why they have evolved, how MANY have evolved etc. After reading the books, it will be great to actually get in there and figure this part of the story out.
I actually love the looks of both the Architect and MysterySexyChainguy - I wonder also about a Tevinter connection, although admittedly I don't know as much about the history/lore as some people. I read up on what I can find though, if you love the game, its pretty interesting!

MClover, the way the forum is going, I fear that even after we have impaled the Architect on a two handed sword, there will still be people claiming thatthat wasn't him
Although recent posts lead the purple dude to be the Architect, I still have a my internal image of the architect to be the skeletor dude. I made this little image to show why I think Skeletor looks more like the book Architect than Purple dude.

Despite my feelings that Skeletor looks more like the Architect, both Maria's private message to Gaider as well as this image of Utha make it seem to be Purple Dude:

Same although I plan on picking up The Calling
Am I the only one who thinks he might actually be a party member other than an enemy at least from the summary it seems like he would willingly help the Grey Wardens

But again, going by the book: that could not be Utha. Her hair should have fallen out, her skin totaly corrupted. Her eyes glowing red.
I believe that what happened is that when the Architect had to move from book to game, they decided that a large number of gamers want the big bad guy to look impressive.
It's been going on for years. Every boss needs to one up the previous one. When you reach the one orchestrating the whole evil plot, he has thousands of tricks up his sleeve, gazillions of hitpoints... in the end you wonder why he didn't just conquer the world by himself from the get go, instead sending out henchmen and minions until you were tough enough to defeat him.
