Firstly, I appreciate that the cursing is somewhat limited to certain characters. I understand the world is not always a polite place.
I'd like to be able to show my parents this piece of science fiction though; my father would appreciate the voice acting, I'm sure, given his same interest in sci-fi.  Or I could show it to my brother, to get him interested; I like having people to talk about ME with. However, profanity's a bit of a no-no in our family. Yes, some shows cuss and we'll watch, but it's happens few times. With ME2, it's a bit more frequent and includes the f word - a bit more than a bit of a no-no.

So I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else would have appreciated a 'censored' setting for the dialogue. When playing by myself I wouldn't bother with it because cursing doesn't bother me that much, but I think it'd be nice to have.

Your parents can't handle occasional swearing in a mature entertainment medium?

My father probably could, it's just that I suppose I wouldn't want it reflecting badly on me. It's not a necessary thing, obviously, but I just thought it'd be nice. And wondering if anyone felt the same. I'll probably show it off anyway, after replaying through some scenes.

Just put on a set of headphones or just stick to games rated "E".

I understand there is much you can show them without overt swearing though.

I suppose an option wouldn't hurt. Still though, I think it adds to the characters. I mean, Jack without swearing?! Pshaw...

the word "censored" always pisses me off. i understand what you are saying, but if your dad is as into sci-fi as you describe i'm sure he is more used to it than you think. if it is really a no-no in your family then so should be this game and its content.

ya know, cussing is pretty "vanilla" compared to what goes on in the world everyday. i can't believe people still get hung up on language like this, but i guess i can understand since i still refrain from saying "F***" in front of my mom even though i think it's retarded to have to do so.

I appreciate people are different and I actually respect people who refrain from cussing most of the time, but when it comes down to it cursing is a form of expression that is prevalent in our culture.
I don't think it should be used lightly, but in a form of art and entertainment like this one I don't find it was used in way meant to be crude or crass, but to show realistic emotion and feeling.

I won't get into a debate on whether you really need to be swearing to prove a point or show emotion or disaproval (or approval for that matter.. ^_^), but that is how I see it in this case.

So to answer your question, no I don't wish for a censored version of this game.

Unfortunately, swearing is losing it's 'OMG' factor. Even the F-bomb is becoming just another word. Assassins Creed 2 dropped the F-Bomb twice within the first 5 minutes.

I thought some of the swearing was a bit out of place considering the first game was squeaky clean. But it is supposed to be a darker, grittier kind of game.

I didn't even notice any swearing beyond one or two, specifically Jack and Aria. I guess I'm just not uptight about that kind of thing. So long as it sounds natural, what's the problem?

Cursing is so much worse than shooting people and seeing dead bodies.

I have nothing against those who prefer to not use or have much to do with curses but I think it's important to remember that the ESRB ratings are there for a reason and the M rating on this game states there is "Strong Language"

With the kind of game Mass Effect already is it can be a bit like watching a CG movie of sorts, now to take this metaphor further, if Mass Effect was a movie it'd be rated R. I'm not much of a movie buff but I'm pretty sure all the rated R movies I have on DVD don't come with a censorship option.

You can check the rating on a game and if something listed in there is really going to bother you and become an issue it's easier to simply not get the game. I hate to shoot you down and all but that's really what it comes down too.

I'm of the opinion that rather than create "censored" versions of works of art and media, people should just avoid them.

You can tolerant the swearing and that is alright, just don't show it to your family. Its their loss, there is a reason we have the ESRB, that Mature rating, and that content description. I don't want there ever to be two versions of a game where one is censored and the other isn't, its ridiculous enough in music albums.

Are you talking about the PC version? Because I believe there are parental control settings for the 360 console, not just the game, that I imagine would help with that... On the back of the ME2 box, in fact, it is stated "Supports family settings."

by supporting family settings it doesn't censor the game, just stops you from playing it entirely.

Is someone holding a gun to your head and forcing you to turn them on?

I agreethere is too much cursing in the game and ignore the petty wise cracks from
some of these other gamers.  There is no need for cursing to put a point
across in my opinion and this cursing was put in to shock and make characters
seem tough and nasty.

A person or a character that need to curse to get a point across lacks the
intellectual vocabulary to voice their opinions or thoughts in any situation,
debate or discussion.  Again this cursing
in the game is another shock value instance within this game.[/b]

I have no idea what you're getting at.

My point was that the 360 family settings doesn't solve the OPs problem.

I honestly have no idea how the family settings work, I was just trying to offer a possible option.

Completely untrue and ironically, incredibly bigoted of the anti-cursing camp to say.

A person who swears excessively and uses certain words very loosely, perhaps do lack a wide vocabulary I agree. But there are times and situations where a swear word is more appropriate and nothing else could be used to so eloquently describe a situation or a reaction.

Your side only disagree because you choose to let those words offend you to that extent, yet those words exist because they have to. Swear words express something and if you somehow removed them from existence other words would fill in the void, for example 'dang" is an obvious replacement for "damn", used because it was considered inoffensive but eventually because of how it was used people began to see it being just as offensive and being the same thing as "damn" so now some people decide to consider it as a swear word and forbidden in households.

The entire thing is just idiotic, I wouldn't expect a blood-thirsty killer or thug to say "Hold still or I will fire my weapon at you" rather then "Stay there or I will blow your ass to smitherens".

ugh

The problem with the swearing in this game is that people do it 90% of the time because they think it makes them sound "cool" or "intimidating" or something. Just the whole delivery. Like the "don't **** with Aria" line, like it's supposed to be so dramatic. If I were Shepard I'd have just laughed my ass off and told her I destroyed an intergalactic demigod cyborg so I'll pretty much do whatever I feel like.

Other times, the cursing is justified as a fairly natural flow of conversation.
