Joker repetitively uses the word S*** when he is walking through the Normandy before the final mission. whatever, guess it hurts some moronic parents feelings

Whoa, why are you getting so personal about this?

If you trust Bioware as much as you say you do, then you don't need to worry. People in the gaming industry...if they don't want to push the envelope a little more each time, (or a lot more in some cases,) then they have the wrong job. Game development is one that will keep growing for a long time. If you're worried for some reason that they'll change for the majority of people with different, (not better, different,) standards than you, you're worrying too much.

At this point, despite a lot of people's ideas, swearing is becoming a lot more common. F-words are being used in many more games now, as well as in movies and other forms of media.

Because cultural decay is the result of perpetuation.  Not actualization.  In essence it's the idiots that "pretend" to uphold these cultural laws of retardation and can't seem to mature to the point mentally where they realise thought and inflection are not shared with the community they are pretending to be just like and because of this all forms of communication need be accepted as geniune and proper regardless of personal and bias perspective.

Its the difference between being a grown up and understanding that other people don't think like you do, and never developing to that point, which in the US in particular happens around the 6th grade.  The move from grade school to junior high or middle school tends to force certain realizations on children.  Unless of course they live in a tiny backwoods (I saw backwards out loud but write backwoods to appeal to your sense of propriety but it's really just a joke at your expense) communities without the internet or source of formal education that would impart upon them this great wisdom.

The issue is some people don't learn this lesson.  They are allowed through random chance to bounce through life without ever figuring out that everyone around them hates their guts for being ignorant to all the BS that reality puts human beings through.  These ignorant people are the source of all cultural decay in the western world.   And they must be educated or stopped.  We've already had a retard in the big chair.  People need to wake up and realize stupid is not an excuse.

Repeat this with me people!!!!

STUPID IS NOT AN EXCUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Firstly, I appreciate that the cursing is somewhat limited to certain characters. I understand the world is not always a polite place.
I'd like to be able to show my parents this piece of science fiction though; my father would appreciate the voice acting, I'm sure, given his same interest in sci-fi.  Or I could show it to my brother, to get him interested; I like having people to talk about ME with. However, profanity's a bit of a no-no in our family. Yes, some shows cuss and we'll watch, but it's happens few times. With ME2, it's a bit more frequent and includes the f word - a bit more than a bit of a no-no.

So I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else would have appreciated a 'censored' setting for the dialogue. When playing by myself I wouldn't bother with it because cursing doesn't bother me that much, but I think it'd be nice to have.

the word "censored" always pisses me off. i understand what you are saying, but if your dad is as into sci-fi as you describe i'm sure he is more used to it than you think. if it is really a no-no in your family then so should be this game and its content.

ya know, cussing is pretty "vanilla" compared to what goes on in the world everyday. i can't believe people still get hung up on language like this, but i guess i can understand since i still refrain from saying "F***" in front of my mom even though i think it's retarded to have to do so.

it's kind of irrational, right?

People cuss because they aren't smart enough to find another word.

Or because they see no need to use one word over another.

No matter what happens, cussing is NOT necessary.

This is true, it isn't absolutely necessary. It is preference.

Thats true, but how would you rather express yourself if you broke your leg?

"S***!"
or
" It appears that i have recieved a compound fracture on my right femur"

I guess I appreciate you agreeing with me for once...

My parents don't like swearing. As much as I don't really care, (really, if you say darn it in the place of damn it, is it really better?) I respect their standards. It could go a long way if you...held back a little. Just because someone's standards are different...doesn't mean you should pounce on them out of fear that their standards will become dominate. It promotes immaturity...which is what you say swearing isn't. (Well, that's what that other guy was saying.) Kinda weird.

yeah. but this is "our" platform. we are playing mass effect, not watching "golden girls". THAT is why i get pissed when some dork comes in here and posts a thread about how he/she would like it if cursing would be extracted so they could share the experience with their parents. thats what i'm saying.

I will admit, I'd like it if Shepard swore a bit. I mean, I love lines from the first game like "Someone up there needs my boot up his ****" Shepard just needs to epically use the f-bomb in the 3rd game somehow.

How can you feel threatened by this? You ARE playing Mass Effect! So is this person! So this person wants to share the experience with someone else, with the cursing taken out for THEM, I don't know why this offends you so much. Like I said, Bioware will keep the swearing in if they feel it adds to the mood or a character. If they ever add a toggle, it just makes it more accessible to more people. You can still play with the swearing on! Your Mass Effect experience would never be tarnished.

Fair point about different standards and I agree. But thats what makes ME2 more realistic as well. Not all characters swear continually. Only certain ones do. Not every character is a mature, well spoken person with the exact same standards. That makes the game feel more authentic.

Force every character to watch their words and its considerably less so. I think we all know someone like Jack or Joker in real life. Or might actually be that person. We also know people like your parents. Mass Effect has both types of people in its vast universe. And many inbetween.

toggles take time and resources that could be otherwise dedicated to worthy ME3 pursuits, this is not a "worthy" pursuit. it is a waste of time for a moronic cause. i'm guessing that Bioware will make the right decision, i post my oppostion to let them know where i stand. it's that simple

Ugh...okay, last thing: I don't care that you want to post your opposition. I'm glad it's that simple. I only take offense that you insult people who are on the other side of the conflict. Who are really only asking a question, simply to be able to share it with someone else. You call this person a moron, or what he wants as moronic. It doesn't make sense. With this logic, I could insult you, and your intelligence, for wanting swearing so bad because it makes the game more "realistic."

Or I need to stop trying to force civility on a gaming forum. Go ahead and go with that option, I'm sure some "genius" will come in and do so anyway. Have a nice night, or morning, or afternoon. Or whatever.

I'll have to agree with others and say it's all about the context.

Say they had Shep swear during his final speech, and say he/she said something like "We will fight for the lost! We will make these a-holes pay!". People talk about different things ruining their immersion, well, in this case, hearing a hardened soldier being filtered down to saying "We'll get those darn doodyheads!" or something similar, instead of speaking his mind, would completely and utterly ruin a key moment in the game.

Jack is Jack. Say what you will about her looks or her demeanor, but her character is very well written. Having her not curse would be a travesty. It would be like censoring Brad Pitt or Edward Norton in Fight Club.

I definitely could have done without the profanity to be honest. Added more to the gears of war in space feeling I was already getting. Star wars did just fine without profanity and I don't see why ME can't.

My words precisely, followed by a "What the hell are they? Devout religious fanatics and/or bible thumpers or something?" Either way, if they cant handle it, they really dont need to see it to begin with IMO.

I don't know, having Padme curse at Anakin/Vader for his dark side turn in "Revenge" would of certainly been better than "You're breaking my heart."

Vote with your feet, there are some games and movies I'll never play or watch if they contain some kind of content I don't want to see. A little bit of harsh language isn't part of it, but if it was I just wouldn't buy it. I'm not taking something away from someone else just because we don't share the same interests.

this cursing was put in to shock and make characters
seem tough and nasty.

So what?  Isn't that a pretty effective way to build a character's personality?

Jack IS tough and nasty.  She is an angry, tattoo'd murderer with a shaved head who was raised in a facility where they tortured her.  She has either been abused or taken advantage of by everyone she has met, she never had real parents, nobody cared about her, she has intimacy and trust issues, and most of the people she has associated with were likely uneducated, dangerous criminals.

If she didn't speak like that, her character would be a complete mockery.  It would have no impact, and it would render her absolutely impossible to believe in as a real character.

A person or a character that need to curse to get a point across lacks the
intellectual vocabulary to voice their opinions or thoughts in any situation,
debate or discussion.

I disagree, but even if this were true...
Are you saying that games should never portray people who are uneducated, or who don't have college level vocabulary?  Some people DO lack the ability to articulate their thoughts well.  Some people are NOT raised in an environment where cursing is discouraged.  Why wouldn't characters such as this be portrayed in a movie or a video game?

Again this cursing
in the game is another shock value instance within this game.

No, it isn't shock value, it is realismImmersion.
Without realistic, believable characters, this game wouldn't be even half as good.

I really think they should just go ahead and make idiot proof ratings for all kinds of media.

"This game/movie contains people dropping f-bombs, boobies, and lots of heads exploding. If you buy this and then complain about the content after the fact (especially if you are a parent buying for a minor) you are a stupid hypocrite, and the studio/game designer reserves the right to call you such in press releases and media interviews."
