Ok so I'm in my first playthrough playing as a Vanguard in Hardcore mode (I unlocked it in the .ini) and I can usually hold my own but when I do die it's almost always by a sniper most likely from an assassination. Even when I'm storming they seem to be able to kill me at times. I have my barrier ability filled about halfway and I'm wearing medium armor now too but the snipers are still the biggest threat for me. Are there any tips you guys have for dealing with them?

As a related question is it usually better to use damage protection or shield upgrades with your armor?

Snipers using the Assassination ability deal a TON of damage. (You can tell if they're using it because that 'red laser' will appear.) I'm currently a level 45 Sentinel/Bastion with maxed out Barrier and Electronics and wearing Colossus X Light armor, and a shot from a Sniper will STILL take off all my shields along with about 1/6 of my health. (That's well in excess of over 1500 damage!)

As for dealing with them, Sabotage on Snipers will stop them from attacking, while Lift/Singularity will keep them from taking any actions. Apart from that, the only advice I can give is to use cover and don't stand there in one spot shooting if you know there are snipers around.

I always use the Medical Exoskeleton and Kinetic Exoskeleton upgrades with my armor, personally, but between those two upgrades you mentioned? I'd go with shield upgrades.

Yeah, the snipers can be a pain. The second you see that red line you must do something about it. There are a few places (like on Therum) that you just have to run for cover until you're close enough to do anything about it. You can always send a squaddie out in the open to take the hit, and then make your run for it. I play on insanity, where it's basically a one shot kill until you are at least level 30 with good armor. So I'm always like, "Hey Kaiden, run over that way while I stay here!". Then when I hear that laser sound I make my move... and once the sniper is down I revive Kaiden.

Thanks for the tips guys. I've finished my first playthrough and am now going to import it over to ME2 so hopefully the snipers will be a little less of a problem, though overall I hear the combat in general is even more challenging than ME1.

Well, from my experience it's a little harder as you die a lot faster (very little health), but the only seriously challenging parts (imo) is when you have enemies that break the whole cover system thing they got going. If they're by themselves, you can sometimes sprint to another cover, but if they aren't, it can be real hard.

I also found that assassinate hard to avoid. It wasn't that I didn't notice the red laser, but that sometimes it seemed to either not be there, or they didn't have to shoot where it was pointing.

The red laser only indicates that said enemy is ACTIVATING their Assassination ability, not that they're actually firing. The actual shot usually follows a second or two after the red laser hits your position. If you happen to move out of the path of the laser, but then stay in a single spot, it's more than likely that the actual sniper shot is right on target and thus hits you. Thus, the best thing to do when you see red lasers is to either hide behind cover, or run for it for a few seconds.

Combat in me2 is much better, no more assasinations, and I only had problems with cloaking Geth Hunters (who walk right up to you and shotgun you in the face). This was on hardcore. Lower than that the game is too easy, especially if you use shockwave.

I don't know about 'no' assassinations. Some of those collector fight can kill you in a couple seconds of exposure if you get hit just right by a harbinger or scion to knock you out of cover.

Those heavy weapon barrages than can push you about and expose you to 3 other shooters are just as bad. At least the snipers of ME1 can almost universally be disabled and dealt with quickly if they don't catch you by surprise.

Sometimes those heavy weapons knock you out of cover anyway.

Yes snipers in ME1 are infuriating at higher difficulties although not as much as freaking rocket launchers that kill you in one hit and if they are drones they have ridiculous mobility (Luna missions is insane).

Yeah, snipers were the one huge weakness for my Adept. I grew to hate that targeting reticule, especially if they were too far to biotic pulverize.

But that's what Garrus is for, right? Sniping the bad guys I can't reach :3

I was just about to start a thread like this. I'm using an adept on insanity, and previously I'd only used infiltrators, so I'd never worried much about them. I went straight to therum and this one sniper just keeps killing me over and over, and I don't have a squaddie who can snipe yet. Looks like maybe I'll just have to tone down the difficulty to get by...

I had to redo that so many times... playing a vanguard on veteran!  Biotics were useless, so it was down to my shotgun to deal with the drone swarm... oh, great.
