This is an absolutely infuriating bug indeed. A fix of some sort would be most welcome. From my experience with BioWare though, they are not in any hurry at all to fix "little things" like this. We've all already bought the game, right? /sigh

It's not a bug, it's working as intended.  Read the description for Defensive power use.

Yes, it's a poor design decision, but don't call it a bug.

Am I the only one wishing that we had "Tactics" in this game similar to what you see in DA:O? This way we could have better control on what our minions did in the field ...

Agree with the first statement.

So i would like to add that teammate sheathe when Shepard do it himself and when there are no enemy on sight. No Automatic unsheathe from Shepard too.

Keep configuration from mass effect 1.

Thanks.

Right... So having two AI battling over their ammo types, constantly using their own when ever the cool down runs out isn't an over-sight?

I also think you're the one who needs to read the description for squad power usage.

"When enabled, squad members automatically use their most effective powers in combat. When disabled, squad members only use defensive and ammo powers automatically."

Not:

"When disabled, squad members will constantly argue over ammo types and not use any other powers."

GCreature, it is working as intended. The problem is that "working as intended" is just awful and they should change it.

Like it or not, it's not correct to call it a bug.

"Working as intended" doesn't mean poorly thought out, or slipped past QA.

Just because it wasn't a conscious design decision, doesn't mean it's intentional.

"Bug" just means there's a defect or imperfection. Which this quite clearly is.

A bug is unintentional or undefined behavior. The fact that the NPCs do exactly what the description on "squad power use" says--using their ammo powers whenever they can--suggests to me that while it may be poorly designed, it's not unintentional.

But it doesn't matter. Intended or not, it's bad and should be changed.

So as not to derail the topic any further, that I will agree with.

My biggest problem with it on PC is that my stupid squad mates never activate ammo powers on their own UNLESS I activate a squad ammo power. Then they override it.

Seriously, I can go through an entire mission without my squaddies ever activating their ammo powers as long as I don't activate a squad power. As soon as I activate a squad ammo, they override.

I agree. This problem ends up nullifying the usefullness of Squad Cryo.

Well, that did get fixed for the PC version. Lucky us I guess. :)

Via an unofficial hotfix, sure. There are plenty of other radical bugs (don't even get me started on one patch locking all of your specializations) that haven't been addressed. I doubt this will get looked at any time soon.

Haha, nice.

And I agree too.  I was considering giving squad cryo ammo a try and then I was like, "Wait, I'm planning on making all of the squadmates loyal."  So I didn't do it -- that probably wasn't their intention.  Just speculation on my part.

I would really love to see this fix and;

savegames remembering squad-ammo and weapon used; I mean on insanity it's incredible frustrating when you are reloading your autosave and you discover:

a)Your companions have the wrong weapons (for example AR users always equip it instead of the sniper rifle);

B)Squad's squad-ammo have dissappeared and you have to be switching weapons and activating the ammo power from your companions instead of fighting.

It's a minor annoyance compared with the ammo squad arguing, but still an annoyance.

First off the three extra ammo powers aren't useless at all shredder ammo does extra damage to organics, ap ammo does extra damage to armor and snyths, and warp ammo does extra damage to armor, barrier, and health, it's warp in bullet form when an enemy is affected by biotics at all it will do even more damage so they are not useless, your just angry that your teammates say FU to your ammo and say MY AMMO FTW. I personally don't have a problem with squad just make it so that when an enemy comes up it switches to the most powerful ammo for that enemy of defense type.

I didn't say they were worthless, in fact Warp ammo is my favorite ammo in the game and armor piercing ammo is better against armor than Inferno is.  However; if I'm fighting Geth and I tell Garrus to equip disruptor ammo, I don't want Garrus to keep equiping armor piercing ammo to fight an enemy with no armor.

That said, Shredder ammo is worthless, completely and totally worthless.  It is hands down the most worthless power in the game and unlocking it along with Thane's loyalty makes him considerably less powerful due to his insistance on using his worthless ammo.

I'm fine with the defensive powers being automatic; but there's just no need for the ammo powers to be automatic.  If you can't handle ordering someone to equip their ammo power at the start of a mission then you probably have the squad AI turned on to the more active setting anyway.  I honestly don't get how this one slipped through the cracks it just seems so obvious to me.

They could just classify ammo powers with offensive ones like Warp, Throw, etc. Seems like it would be an easy enough fix.

Not a fix because sometimes you want you squad mates to use their mods, but you can remove their ammo powers manually through the save editor. I only do this on thane as the others powers aren't totally worthless, also don't forget to add talent points if you remove powers.

If you want them to use their ammo powers you can specifically order them to. What I'm suggesting is a band-aid fix that simply fixes the problem of idiotic AI overriding a vastly superior ammo with their own ****ty one.

I've also heard that if you actually level up a squadmate's ammo power to unlock squad ammo that they automatically equip their squad ammo for everyone which means every time you use them your entire squad will be stuck with their ammo. And as a consequence if you have two allies with squad ammo powers their AIs will get into a tug of war over the squad ammo so that one will equip their ammo power then the other will override it with theirs, then the first one will override it with theirs, then the second one will override it with theirs and so on and so forth.

I've never tried this out of fear of being stuck with a dysfunctional squad. Have any of you guys experienced this?

Unfortunately we 360 players rely on Bioware to issue our patches for us which is irritating since the mod community invariably figures out how to fix **** like this long before the developer gets around to it.
