Actually, everyone giving this game 7s and 8s....what would you give the first "Mass Effect"? For some reason people seem to think "ME1" is the gold standard for gaming....it's not. The combat was clunky, the inventory system was terrible, it ran like sh*t on the 360, half the areas looked exactly the same, the Mako was awkward as hell, and in general it wasn't that good a game.

-I would have given Mass Effect 1 a rating of an 8. It was flawed in some spots, however it was groundbreaking in others. It had a great set up that needed fixing, not butchering.

This was my main complaint with ME2 as well. Not the stupid whining about shooter part, the fact that sidequests were detached from the plot.

And the lack of scope, and lack of exploration when landing at a new area.

Honestly, I'd give the game a 8.5. Not because i didn't enjoy it, theirs just a lot they can improve on. Don't believe in giving near perfect scores for almost anything unless its near perfect.

-My issues with the combat element aside I felt I was missing another disc for the additional content the game is missing. Like I said, whats the point in having a galaxy to explore if all you get to do is scan for minerals? Unfortunately trying to not spoil anything, the loyalty quests are linked in their way to the main quest plotline.

Why would you play a bioware RPG for anything other then the story, the characters lol?

I'm just curious, if you ignore the characters and story, how is ME2 more appealing then say, Gears of War?

-Its not. Mass Effect 2 is catered almost exclusively toward that audience. It’s a shooter game with a dash of a story added to it.

Will anyone ever remember that Mass Effect 1 also had loading screens?

-I had no problem with them. The elevators may have been long in some areas but the game continues on as it loads up the next level. When you went planet side you has a scene where the Normandy flies in and drops the Mako. Mass Effect 2 now replaces the loading screens with little tech schematics or cheesy looking tech schematic animations.

I know I’m going to take a lot of flak on this…

Its not worth a 7 rating. There is not nearly enough side quests to keep anyone interested, it no longer a rpg/shooter now it’s a shooter with some story elements to it. The only good things about the game are the graphics, the main storyline and the loyalty missions to add some depth to you companions.

Sorry this game feels like a reboot more than a sequel with all the changes to dumb down the game.

*edited to clarify something.

Thank you for the breath of fresh air! I just installed my Corsiar P128 (Amazing by way) and I am debating if I should even install the game again. In my opinion, the game is no way near 9.0 status. It's like when the movie Transformers came out. After the initial hype, you finally see how mediocre it is.

-We are unfortunately in the minority.

The basics of recruiting your companions for example (the main subplot of the game) is even stale when most of them are in the same locations. When you go to Omega you get Zaeed, Garrus, Mordin and if you choose to Morinth. Illium you get Samara and Thane. The loyalty missions what a surprise, are just as limited locations for just as many. Again it seems such a waste when you have so many worlds at your fingertips with absolutely nothing to do on them. Oh, wait, scan for minerals…

I'd say it's a low to mid 80 but reviews nowadays are so inflated they're meaningless anyway.

The "you can't upgrade" comment threw me as well. It feels like that Nate Ahearn just rushed through the game.

One thing I would like to hear more about is what people really thought of the story in detail, but that would be for a spoiler thread.

I'm not sure how they arrive at their scores to be honest, but I'm noticing more and more graphical bugs like hands phasing through their own bodies and objectives, anti-aliasing issues, texture issues...I think that has to keep the game from getting the really high marks because presentation matters.

Jessica Chobot is a real kick ass chick. Nate Ahearn is stupid and has douchey taste in shoes. I will say that this game is great, but if you can't see that it has flaws I don't know what the point is of reveiwing something if you can't be objective. No hagrid, not 10/10. Not 9.6. 8.7-9.0 is what I would give it.

What is there to be in the dark about?  It's in the title of the thread - "IGN.com Mass Effect 2 Second Opinion - Does it deserve a 9.6?"  Excuse me for thinking it doesn't *need* a second opinion.

So by that logic I should carry on with my review of St. Elmo's Fire despite having never watched the film... good to know.

IT'S A VIDEO TALKING ABOUT A REVIEW SCORE.  It's not a freaking movie!  What is there to know about it?  Geez, you are really overreacting here.

I guess Jessica and I are alone in the world in missing both the Mako and elevators.

...although their workaround for the elevators (the news broadcasts and ever-present terminals) was well-done. My only disappointment there is that you didn't get any missions out of them, like you did from the first game. Again, something that could change with the DLC Hammerhead missions (and beyond).

"ME1" is not really groundbreaking in any way. No offense but you'd have to be new to games to think it's in any way doing something new.

And for the sake of argument, let's say it is. That's still not enough of a reason to rate it higher than the sequel, especially considering how flawed the original was.

Yes,  the original had flaws, but removing flawed features instead of improving them is not what I call an improvment.
Also ME was a baffle in every aspect, this sequel? not so much. Oh yes,it  has nicer graphics and better directed cutscenes but I think that was a giveaway , it can also have an oversimplified gameplay ,with barely any items to choose from it, you know to make everything smoother...but I wouldn't call this grounbreaking either.
Overall it was less impressive. I didn't feel any strong vibe from it, it's still a good game, but so are dozen games coming every month.
I' ll stick with DA:O for the moment.

Jessica spoke the truth. And I miss the mako too.

I'd like to chime in with the mako supporters. Obviously not the monotony of the sheer number of uncharted worlds, but some of the planet's had beautiful skyscapes. Agebinium and Casbin spring to mind, amongst others. I miss those.
Ilos and Virmire mako sections were also good, but that goes without saying.

One thing which loses points for me is the Normandy docking - I'd like to be able to run around in the Normandy while it is docked, and walk out the main airlock instead of being automatically teleported to the outside world.

For me, overall a 9.0.

Definitely improved in a lot of areas. Combat is good, apart from being a bit rigid at times, and the overuse of the cover mechanic. Streamlining on the whole is good. I don't miss managing that old inventory, but I do miss being able interchange weapon mods.

The main downside is the 'modular' nature of the game. Everything feels a bit broken up, taking away from the immersion. For instance, mission complete screens and defined 'combat'/'safe' areas.

Loading screens are ok in some instances, but disguised loading screens would bring back some of the immersion. In some cases elevators were enjoyable in ME1. Though I'm not thinking only elevators now, but taxi rides, shuttles, and so on.

Finally, more squad-squad interaction would improve the immersion (banter while running around among other things).

I could not believe what these editors were saying about this game. I guess my expectations about what ME2 was going to be like was hyper-inflated... because I was dumbfounded during my 1st (and only) playthrough.

I suppose my tastes have moved on...
