When did this start? I've seen it so many times in movies that a character tilts his/her head to crack his/her neck and it's supposed to be an "I'm a bad****" moment. In the cutscene in Ostagar, a Darkspawn strides forward and I said to myself, "He's going to crack his neck." And sure enough ...

I would guess it's a display of your complete lack of hesitation to enter a brawl such that you would prepare your neck in advance by releasing the built-up pressure in your neck, thus ensuring that your opponent is not afforded the satisfaction of hearing your neck pop if he should succeed in bludgeoning you about the head.

I think it's a martial arts movie thing. Maybe Bruce Lee did it?

Or Chuck Norris. That would certainly explain the awesome.

I do believe Agent Smith did it in the Matrix right before he and Neo do that whole Subway fistfight. I might say it really elevates the mood.

I prefer to show I am a badass by cracking my opponent's neck before a fight.

You're right, I think it's at least that old. I watch a lot of action movies, and there are so many moments that seem like this:

[Close up, ground, one boot hits the ground. Cue explosive sound effect. Second boot hits ground. Redouble explosion. Pan up from low angle. Bad**** shrugs shoulders, stares intently, cracks neck. Cue dramatic music.]

Now, on a merely tangentially note, I had finessed the word bad(word) by typing in the letter “a” followed by two dollar signs – $$. And I noticed that this board replaced those three characters with four characters. I wonder if this is for our British friends who spell the synonym for donkey with four letters?

i crack my neck all the time, but not because it looks badass (my neck gets stiff if i don't do it)

but yeah, in movies this is used as a "badassery move", just like cracking the nuckles

That and "walking in a group in slow motion." That one, I think, originated with "Reservoir Dogs."

At least there were no DA cutscenes with Shale walking in slo-mo to sixties pop music.

I want to punch your face <3

Anyway, it's an old "tradition" from probably around the 70's or 80's.

Martial arts movies, made by people who don't really do martial arts, but rely on brute strength.

It symbolizes stiffness and an inability to "let loose".

In anime, this is the equivalant of wearing weighted clothing.

It's to show how tough you are by breaking your neck before the enemy can, confuses the heck out of them (after all, where can they go when you kill yourself :-))

Bone cracking makes me shiver. Euck.

Still, if you don't know how to crack your bones properly, you can damage them.

Heh reminds me what my mother used to say to my brother, don't crack your knuckles it will cause them to deform.

I don't know if thats true ..but anyways..didn't like the idea of having misshapen hands..so never did it.

:P I have never heard that one before!

If you don't do it properly, you can do all sorts of things. Pull muscles, dislocate bones...

its all a matter of interpretation. Was there a dialogue of the darkspawn saying "yeah...I am bad ass for cracking my neck"?

The "cracking" sound you hear is you relieving some built up gas in the joins, the sudden pressure change can more quickly deteriorate the joins making you more prone to arthritis etc.

Cracking your neck, is a sign of you not caring about your health.

Which makes you stupid and reckless, which is a dangerous trait in an enemy... making your enemy a badass...

What a cool observation.

It's something ingrained in our culture, I guess.  And you're right.  It apparently signifies  being a "badass"

Mike Tyson used to do that  just before his fights, as well.  And it does get the point across
