You're right, I think it's at least that old. I watch a lot of action movies, and there are so many moments that seem like this:
[Close up, ground, one boot hits the ground. Cue explosive sound effect. Second boot hits ground. Redouble explosion. Pan up from low angle. Bad**** shrugs shoulders, stares intently, cracks neck. Cue dramatic music.]
Now, on a merely tangentially note, I had finessed the word bad(word) by typing in the letter “a” followed by two dollar signs – $$. And I noticed that this board replaced those three characters with four characters. I wonder if this is for our British friends who spell the synonym for donkey with four letters?

That and "walking in a group in slow motion." That one, I think, originated with "Reservoir Dogs."
At least there were no DA cutscenes with Shale walking in slo-mo to sixties pop music.

I do believe Agent Smith did it in the Matrix right before he and Neo do that whole Subway fistfight. I might say it really elevates the mood.
Anyway, it's an old "tradition" from probably around the 70's or 80's.
Martial arts movies, made by people who don't really do martial arts, but rely on brute strength.
It symbolizes stiffness and an inability to "let loose".
In anime, this is the equivalant of wearing weighted clothing.

It's to show how tough you are by breaking your neck before the enemy can, confuses the heck out of them (after all, where can they go when you kill yourself :-))
Totally ruins their plans.

Still, if you don't know how to crack your bones properly, you can damage them.

If you don't do it properly, you can do all sorts of things. Pull muscles, dislocate bones...

When did this start? I've seen it so many times in movies that a character tilts his/her head to crack his/her neck and it's supposed to be an "I'm a bad****" moment. In the cutscene in Ostagar, a Darkspawn strides forward and I said to myself, "He's going to crack his neck." And sure enough ...
What a cool observation.
It's something ingrained in our culture, I guess. And you're right. It apparently signifies being a "badass"
Mike Tyson used to do that just before his fights, as well. And it does get the point across
