When did this start? I've seen it so many times in movies that a character tilts his/her head to crack his/her neck and it's supposed to be an "I'm a bad****" moment. In the cutscene in Ostagar, a Darkspawn strides forward and I said to myself, "He's going to crack his neck." And sure enough ...

What a cool observation.

It's something ingrained in our culture, I guess.  And you're right.  It apparently signifies  being a "badass"

Mike Tyson used to do that  just before his fights, as well.  And it does get the point across

Isn't he the guy that gnawed someone's ear off in a fight...I don't know if I would call that "badass"..more like I dunno.....desperate?  hehehe

The "cracking" sound you hear is you relieving some built up gas in the joins, the sudden pressure change can more quickly deteriorate the joins making you more prone to arthritis etc.

Okay that makes sense, and arthritis tends to deform your joints..

So going snap, crackle, pop with your neck and knuckles is cool... so... what about the knees?

If knees count then I'm cool too!   B)

...YOU'RE ONE OF THEM!!!

anywho, I crack my joints and such fairly often. it feels better, looser, etc afterwards. I've played sax for years now, so my neck is probably gonna be screwed up in some form or another, what's cracking it gonna do?

I can crack my knuckles, neck, shoulders and elbows on occasion, my back, toes, and ankles. my jaw pops once in a blue moon, and I'm not sure if my knees have ever cracked.

Well whenever I'm about to combat a monster or turn my neck around really fast I crack my neck beforehand, don't want to pinch a nerve by not preparing!

Next time someone chews off your ear in a fight, lets see you laugh it off.

As to the OP...wow, little light on new discussion material??????

Note: All links open in new window!

Mr. Gaider is not wrong though. Bruce Lee did a lot of bone cracking in his movies.

Check out the training scene on the balcony at 0:43 as well as the legendary fight with chuck norris (no joke). At 0:44, 0:55 and 1:25 you can see and hear Bruce's bone cracking in his warmup :)

It's ingrain dominance and aggression body language. It says you take in all of your surroundings, including your foes and dismisses it all as irrelevant to your own inner contemplation.

All joints of every finger, some of them in two different directions, elbows, knees, toes in a simlar fashion to fingers, and back/neck/shoulders. Been doing so for nearly all my life, my grandmother did for all of hers and neither her hands nor mine show any sign of disfiguration. She had arthritis in her knees and feet, but never had any problems or pain in her hands. Anecdotal, I know.

The reason you crack your neck, knuckles, etc before a fight or any strenuous activity using that body part is having them suddenly pop in an uncontroleld manner can be fairly painful (possibly dangerous). The popping is due to pressure bubbles, and - for instance - having your knuckles crack as you hit someone as hard as you can be quite painful and probably cause damage to your joints, than if you release that pressure before hand using only the amount of pressure necessary.

I don't mind the slightly cliché neck cracking, as long as we are spared the "slowly walking away as something explodes" or "overhead shot pulling back from someone looking up and screaming 'NOOO!' while cradling a dead or dying person."

On a side note, X-Men Origins: Wolverine featured all of those! There was one more that really bugged me that that movie had, but I can't think of it.

there's another reason that i thought just now: Have you ever felt that right after cracking, your joints become more "elastic", or "loose"? Specially the fingers, they seem to move better (pianists and guitar players do this a lot). I think it's only natural for a fighter to have his/her body as mobile as possible before combat. Specially the neck (wich absorbs blows to the head), and the back (wich is a central pillar for the body)

Good points. And thank the Maker that we're spared a cutscene of someone outrunning a fireball.

But the neck-cracking thing ... I think an earlier poster was right about Morrigan and others doing it, too. It's getting to the point when I see characters crack their necks, I crack ... up.

Once you notice it, it seems like it's everywhere.

lmao at bruce lee. That thing is so badly dubbed it sounds like a bag of crisps cracking!!!

I would say that though it makes you look badass its more a tension thing so i would say it more shows fear in a way. I would do it before a football match if im nervous and feel "tight" and crack my neck and move it. If im warmed up and ready i wouldnt. But i suppose a fight is different. Havent seen this cutscene yet tho so cant comment much!! And most boxers do it at the start of a fight, to loosen their neck muscles and release the tense feeling.

While he did do that, his raw boxing ability was awe-inspiring nonetheless. If he had more discipine and some worthy opponents, he'd have a shot at being one of the all-time greatest (this is coming from a lifelong Ali fan)

He did well and had some amazing opponents, he just made them all look like nothing. Ali's big fights were pretty much mafia fixed, so i wouldnt class him as the greatest personally as a boxing fan.

Rocky Marciano, undefeated heavyweight, the only undefeated!! Greatest :P

This is actually quite false. There has been NO study that has shown any measurable correlation between joint cracking and later life problems like arthritis. I just read an article on this maybe 2 weeks ago.

This now belongs in the category of urban myth or old wives tale.

Chuck Norris became who he is by getting killed by Bruce Lee in a movie. A tiny smidgeon of Bruce Lee's awesomeness rubbed off on him during the filming.

This reminds me of sometime ago when Chuck Norris was interviewed by Jay Leno (i think) and was asked "what would happen if Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee tried to fight for real?"

Chuck took less than one second to come with an answer:
"I would be dead in two minutes"
