Oh Maker, we're not gonna have a boxing discussion here are we?Destrier77 wrote...
He did well and had some amazing opponents, he just made them all look like nothing. Ali's big fights were pretty much mafia fixed, so i wouldnt class him as the greatest personally as a boxing fan.
Rocky Marciano, undefeated heavyweight, the only undefeated!! Greatest
If the Mafia controlled any of the fighters you mentioned (which they didn't), it would be Marciano, wouldn't it. He's the New England-based Italian American on that list... isn't he.

Isn't he the guy that gnawed someone's ear off in a fight...I don't know if I would call that "badass"..more like I dunno.....desperate? hehehe
You simply didn't witness Tyson back when he was a bonafide badass with an awesome Karate Kid life story. He was what got me into watching Heavyweight Boxing as a kid.

If you want a boxing discussion, whats so frightening? Good point, but the controlled fighters were the ones who lost, if marciano was "controlled" as you put it, he would have taken a dive. Kinda like with ali's opponent with the punch "so fast you couldnt see it" and with the dust in the gloves against ali.
By the time ali came around boxing was (probably still is) the most corrupt sport in the world. Im not saying he is guilty, he more likely than not doesnt know too much about it but watch some of his fights. Dodgy dodgy... He even says himself he got blinded one fight by some kind of dust on the opponents gloves, maybe rogue dirty fighting
Not the rumble in the jungle though, i woudlnt take that away from him, that was a true grit performance, even thuogh he spent most of it getting a kicking. He deserved that win though sadly its probably what contributed massively towards his parkinsons.

Because once I get started on a boxing discussion I typically don't stop until the moderators come in and put a gag on me and the thread, that's why lolDestrier77 wrote...

True. Although if we really want to dig deep, I can show you evidence of a Marciano loss... a loss that was reversed outside the ring.Good point, but the controlled fighters were the ones who lost,
You're talking about the 2 Ali-Liston fights, yes? The so-called Phantom punch that Liston actually Got back up from (second fight), and the ointment on the gloves incident from the first fight?.if marciano was "controlled" as you put it, he would have taken a dive. Kinda like with ali's opponent with the punch "so fast you couldnt see it" and with the dust in the gloves against ali.
The former is a matter of a bad, inexperienced referee (Joe Walcott... never reffed a fight in his life), and the latter was Liston's own corner cheating. The mafia had nothing to do with either one
In any event, boxing is actually much worse off now that the mafia no longer runs it, believe it or not. At least back in the 50s, Good matchups actually happened. Today though, we see promoters refusing to take "risks" with their fighters. We see blind judges. We see less rematches, and worst of all we see fragmented titles. any given division today will have 4 champions.
Edit: as a side note, Ali started slurring his speech after the Thilla in Manilla
