Because he told Shepard that organics wouldn't be able to stop the Reapers forever. He said that organics were too driven by emotion instead of logic, and that would be their downfall. And Shepard tried to argue it off with, among other things, that the galaxy would stand united against the Reapers.

And then in Mass Effect 2, the Coucil sidelines you like a bat out of hell, the Alliance may as well be non-existent, half of your old crew can't be bothered to help you on your saviour trip, and really the only group backing you is a bunch of terrorist extremists that basically everybody despises.

Now granted, Shepard blew up the Reapers' T-100, but still...

You also united the Krogan, Saved the Rachni, Rewrote the Geth...

Actually, I think he's more or less laughing because:

I have an army of Geth.

I have an army of Rachni.

I have a cure from the genophage.

Why does that sound awfully familar?

Saren also said that if he could prove organics useful, the Reapers would spare them. Yeah, that was a great call; especially as they enjoy liquidating organics to make more of themselves, and if the race proves unsuitable for that purpose they genetically reprogram them until they bear no resemblance to their previous state and are unable to think for themselves.

Now this is the truth. I have a feeling in ME3 we will be in the same spot Saren was minus the indoctrination, that Sheperd will be declared rogue or something...full circle.

That's my theory. That said, Saren also thought himself the hero of the galaxy; saving us from the Reapers. Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

It may be worse than being declared rogue. I wouldn't be surprised if one possible course of action [in ME3] is to actually overthrow the Citadel council because they are not acting on the Reaper threat.

And have Kadien/Ashley hunt him down. Now that would be an awesome game. I'm half expecting that to be the case.

Indeed.  I basically told a friend as he was watching me play the intro that in this game that I will become Saren.

If that's the case I want the ability to storm the council chambers myself.

Only difference is Shepard's idea of saving the galaxy is, like one of my favorite engineers would say, to "give them a right good kick, right the daddybags" while Saren's idea of saving the galaxy was throwing up the white flag.

Yeah I kept getting that feeling throughout ME2 that I was slowly being placed into the same spot Saren was--difference is that I am not working with the Reapers and I haven't given up on trying to convince others of the Reaper threat like Saren did. I mean, once we come to the Council with our Krogan/Geth/Rachni army (if thats what the player has indeed choosen) how will they view us but anything other then a new Saren?

So will we get a mind job from Harbinger? and become indoctrianted(like Saren)?... I would be all for it if i could blow up the Council...

When you put it like that, Saren won.  The Reapers decided to "spare" humanity in their own special way.

I feel the galaxy will end up seeing Shepard as the 'new' Saren, regardless of the fact that Shepard is not indoctrinated, at least to our knowledge. Considering that the SR2 has bits of Sovereign in her, it makes you question those implants, among other things.

I both love and hate that theory, to be honest.

Edit: Truth be told, there are times I'd like nothing more than to storm the Citadel myself just to get at a certain Turian Councilor...

Unless you always made renegade choices. But wouldn't that mean that people would think renegade Shepard is.....better?

Possibly, but in the end it may be the same. Instead of a rogue Spectre and new 'Saren', you are labeled a Cerberus terrorist. Either way, I forsee horible things in Shepard's future.

Now that would be a turn around.
