i'm sure there will be a few new ones, and cameos from the (surviving) old ones - from #1 & #2. i'm sure the love interests will return in some capacity (can you imagine the howls from the internets if they don't?), but at this point balancing all the different outcomes and refining them all to make it manageable is going to be mind-blowingly hard. personally i'd like to see miranda, mordin & legion back, i pretty much don't care about anyone else.

Legion is no problem, since all geth are the same and new one with the same voice and personality can just replace him if original Legion dies. Tali is pretty certain to survive. No matter what kind of Lazarus 2.0 -excuse BioWare comes up with, people are going to be happy anyway just to have Tali there. They're not going to risk high piracy rates and years of embarassing nerd rage over nothing. Liara making a comeback would certainly make sense if only the VA isn't sulky for the petty minor role they gave her in ME2.

I'm not so sure about Kaiden/Ash returning as some of you seem to be. They weren't the most popular characters in ME1 and it would require double amount of work to make just one character make a comeback. I think they'd rather make up a new character that has potential to become popular.

The fact that your romance with them can still be somewhat "intact" at the end of ME2 suggests strongly that they will be around.

If they 100% parted ways with you at Horizon and didn't send that e-mail later (and you didn't lovingly stare at their picture pre-suicide mission), I'd agree with you.

Its not just a matter of people not liking it, its a plot point that makes no sense if the LI's just go away.   They were able to get away with it in ME2 due to sheps death, unless he dies again they cant really get away with it.

What I mean is, save for the jack quickie, all of the romance plots on some level involve "love" and this "only you" aspect.  i.e.an actual romantic relationship was established and not a one night stand.

So you could understand, why people get confused with the idea the romance subplot characters, if they dont die, would simply get relegated to the background, to "busy" to really continue their relationship with shep.

When not so long ago they were like "i love you and want only you shepard, bff forever" then " rofl shepard thats just what we call pillow talk, I used you like a 10 cent ****".

i.e. during a romantic subplot, it makes no sense to build them up to be more than they are if the intention is to simply dump said love interest in the next game as an LI.    I mean essentially they may as well just give shepard a "wanna f*ck?" dialogue choice, and do away with the actual romance subplots.

I suspect that none of the ME 2 squad-mates will return as squad-mates. They can die - and it's not just dialogue that goes into making these characters. I don't see how this makes ME 2 pointless - the point of ME 2 is building a squad and stopping the Collectors. You do that. ME 3 will be a new game with a new plot and new characters. It will probably not focus on building your team for some new mission - I'm expecting something closer in structure to the first game, but with even more varied and open endings or outcomes.

Many of the characters are given reasons to leave your crew following the suicide mission: Samara, Jack, Grunt, Thane, and Zaeed particularly. Mordin joins your crew to deal with the Collectors; after they are defeated he will probably move on to other things. I can't help but think that they have told Garrus' story, or at least a story that can be told with him in Shep's crew. The same with Tali - her story is probably best served with her becoming a Captain in the flotilla. We don't know with Jacob and Miranda, though I could see them staying on with Cerberus and factoring in to a mission or missions centered around that organization. Legion will probably return to the Geth, though he seems like he could be a returning squad-mate, considering that he might just be copied or uploaded into new hardware.

Bioware could surprise us and let us bring all of these characters into the next game, but I honestly think that will hurt the game more than help it.

One last note. After Tali was confirmed as being in ME 2, one of the devs popped in and said something like: "You Tali fans got what you asked for, but now Tali has to go on a suicide mission and you have to deal with the ramifications." Many people took that to mean that she could die - but I think he was saying "she can die, so she won't be a squad-mate in ME 3."

I think you're reading too much into it.

I agree! the main reason to collect the squad was made clear: to stop the collectors. it had nothing to do with bringing tall of them over to ME3.  If you did it for that reason then maybe YOU read too much into it.  I think bioware has it in them to bring back one or two of the ME2 squadmates but I highly doubt more than two could be squadmates in ME3.

for the record I beat it without losing anyone. so no there is no issue of "losing" squadmates into the next installment and not having them as squadmates.  My issue was that sqaudmates that "could" die probably wont be your squadmates in ME3.

I don't really buy the logic of "Person X could die so we won't bring them back". What's the use of developing characters with rich backgrounds if you're just going to throw them away in the final game??

To people saying Samara will leave... did you even play the game? She straight forward SAYS she's in this ***** til' the end.

Oriana or Kolyat would make no sense. It's somewhat BAFFLING why Miranda wouldn't be in ME3 if she lives. She either resigns if you blow the base up, or doesn't if you don't. That simple. She still headed Lazarus and she's still on the NormandySR2. Plus, wherever Jacob goes, Miranda goes. It's really quite simple. TIM isn't going to give you two of his best (one being his very best) to fight the collectors, realize an impending reaper invasion, and yank them off the mission. Think please.

And as I just touched upon... the reaper invasion... you SEE THEM COMING at the end (that's what she said). You see your crew gearing up. They aren't playing dress up and or cowboys and Indians.

The way everyone is talking about this makes it seem like they want these people to be cameos!

They screwed the pooch with Alenko/Williams and Liara in ME2. They actually read this... there's no way they would mess that up again.

Well, as I posted in another thread with a similar vein, Bioware had mentioned at some point that breaking the ME1 romance would have consequences. If Jacob/Miranda/Thane/Jack/Tali/Garrus go away (one, or all of the above) I'm not really seeing where the consequences lie. Sure, Ash/Kaidan can be upset, or whatnot, but there'd be no confrontation between the two NPCs, no 'him/her or me' choice to make between ME1 romance and ME2 romance, etc.

I had really good reasons for abandoning the Kaidan romance thread for my femShep, and I don't want it only glossed over in a half-conceived notion by them taking Thane out of the story with just a passing prologue mention or some nonsense. This would apply for Jacob or Garrus, as well, had I taken to them instead.

I want it to get nasty. I want there to be anger over it. I don't want Kaidan to have another token, short 'I hate you, you betrayed me, you suck.' speech without Thane even around for it to matter. Or at least without me having seen him die from his illness *in-game* and be able to have my Shepard react to it.

petispas1414, what makes you think shephard will be working for Cerebrus in ME3? miranda and jacob have an out with shephard and thats working with Cerebrus...I do like your thats what she said joke tho, haha.

f they bring them back then how? is the default game in ME3 going to be that everyone survives? You say it would suck a lot. I dont disagree with you, I want to see my squadmates back. But how is that going to happen? the best answer I see is wait till ME3 comes out, right? =) when that happens you can tell me I told you so, SuZe, Garrus, Miranda, Jacob, Mordin are by my side kicking reaper butt in ME3.

I hope I am wrong about this as much as many of you want me to be....no more than 2 squadmates in ME2 are likely to reprise roles of shephards squadmates in ME3.

I totally agree with you. Horizon cameos had there point (character immunity) but could have been delivered in such a better way.

I just really hope Bioware doesn't get lazy and end ME3 like Bungie ended Halo 3 :(

Thanks for the constructive response (seriously!) :)

And I apologize if I was unclear about Cerberus and such...

If you have Miranda in your squad at the end of ME2, then TIM will try to get her to stop you from destroying the base (this is from a paragon viewpoint obviously). That's when she's all like "consider this my resignation". Jacob is her top LT/number two. There pretty much a package deal (at least I'd like to think so).

And from a renegade viewpoint... if you save the reaper tech, then it's basically implied you're rolling with Cerberus come ME3. Whilst Miranda states that she questions TIMs motives, she never says she's leaving Cerberus.

You do raise a very good point with the default story though. I guess we'll have to wait to see just what I'd like to consider BWs "ideal" set-up of choices will be.

I think a lot work was done with squadmates in ME2 with a view to having most of them in ME3 as there was just too much effort put into thier charecters to just drop them all in favour of a whole new bunch which would require more charecter immersion missions and trying to connect players with new squadmates when this has already been done by ME2.

Perhaps we will see some old squadmates return if current ones did not make it through the suicide misssion but new squaddies I dont think will happen as ME3 will be the final battle part of the series with its focus on saving the galaxy (again).

We have our dirty dozen and I think that was the plan.
