i've been trying to search for a topic on this, but can't seem to find one. what do gems like diamonds and such do? should i keep em for later?

Yea keep um u can upgrade the dwarves with them

Well you get all the world forces (more or less) to join with you, after you get them then they leave a representative in your camp, and there are some boxes that u can pretty much donate stuff to them in.

Mind you, they only accept four different gems (the "middle" ones), so the other ones might be used elsewhere.
