Quite simply, if they wanted to do new characters, great. They should've done *all* new characters. Bringing back the most shallow and stereotypical character of the first installment for another go however, is not a way to convince people that you're working on making a deep, immersive experience.

Seriously though.... another thread on this was not needed.

Are we POSITIVE that he is the returning character?
It hasn't been strait out said HE IS A COMPANION, but 99.99% chance it is him.

In the end, I think even the people who
*like* Oghren would be hard-pressed to say they would want him back as
the only returning character instead of a whole slate of new
characters.

A. Oh really? Fans of Oghren (of which there are many despite not being the most popular) would rather new characters then Oghren return? It's clear Oghren isn't as popular as Alistair, Morrigan, and Leliana, but go check out the Oghren threads and you'll see there are many who are happy to see him. Thats one hell of a dumb claim.
B. What better way to prove your making an immersive experience then brining back a shallow character and making him deeper and richer?
Your Oghren hating is getting as old as my Oghren a** kissing.

yes but in the end explanations if your in a romance with alistair it says he stays by your side and helps to rebuild the grey wardens
But that's just one of many different endings for Alistair, one that I never got, despite playing several endings. It wouldn't fit with the majority of endings.

i was responding to the returning companion thing it says that alistair wynne and logain are posible companions thats what i meant by typing that post
They just worded it oddly. These companions are making cameos, it just refers to them as companions because they were.

I wouldn't be hard-pressed to say that at all, and I didn't find Oghren shallow. He was a bit of a boisterous bruiser type, but no more than Alistair was a deadpan snarker, or Sten was a proud, warrior race guy. Origins uses a ton of RPG "stereotypes", but it uses them well.

Heres a tip, click edit post, then add whatever else you want to say other then creating two posts in a row. People don't like that especially when their pretty much the same thing or one sentance.
No, I'm not kidding. At MOST those characters will be temporary companions, but moneys on them making only cameos.
Why is that so hard to beleave? Be happy these characters are appearing in the game, and hope their cameos do them justice.

This automatically excludes the four romancable options from origins. AND, since Alistair is a romance option :1.7 – If I had a romance in Origins, does it carry over into
Awakening?
Romances do not carry forward in Awakening, because you are away from
your previous life fighting a new threat.
Basically, it means none of the above will be returning companions. For companions you'll potentially meet Loghain, Wynne, and Alistair
depending on your decisions in Origins.
Finally :
The large role of Oghren, as I understand it, is the role of a full companion. the "There are cameos and returning characters" is finally reffering to the above, or below if you read the FAQ mentioned characters, Loghain, Wynne and Alistair. The rest of the characters ,will probably not make any cameo at all...1.9 – Which Dragon Age: Origins NPC will be returning?
Besides Oghren who plays a large role in Awakening, there are cameos
and returning characters

The Morrigan wannabe that is trying so hard to be scary? Her name is Velanna.
And hopefully she is more interesting than she looks.

Lol, she doesn't seem that bad. The whole Nature thing seems pretty cool though.
/edit ; Thanks Shedevil
