Its actually the first team leader that matters for tech specialist survival.

The first team leader is the player himself :P  with the 2nd squad leader did i mean the person you chose to lead the other team.

Heres a list on what to do to get the best results
1. Do all the loyalty missions
2. Buy all the ship upgrades
3. Only do Legions loyalty mission after you pick him up if you want Kelly and the crew to survive. Get his mission BEFORE you go click on the galatic map.
4. Kill the eye thing and do the infilitrator and biotic things as fast as you can.
5. Choose Tali, Mordin or Legion for the Tech Specialist. Legion is most recommended.
6. Choose Miranda, Jacob or Garrus for the Leaders both times.
7. Choose Mordin or Thane as the person to bring everyone back
8. Choose Samara, Mornith or Jack for the biotic swarm part.

Your forgetting Zheed.  He works as a 2nd team leader as well.  You basically want to pick people with experience.  Garrus, Miranda or Zheed being the best probably.  It really is surprising that Jacob works too but sounds like he does.

I had major issues w/ the tech specialist getting shot in the face in my first playthrough. Tried both Tali and Legion w/ Garrus leading 2nd fire team and no dice. I hit all the vent switches within no more than a second of the duct rat getting to the blockage on each attempt.

Went back and changed my response to Miranda to "I'm not throwing my life away" in the dialog in the cockpit just after crashing into the base and Tali lived.

Also make sure you have the Geth armor upgrade or something like that.  Legion died for me and I think that was the reason why.  Also, I used Grunt to bring the crew back to the Normandy and noone died. Not a very smart character, but he seemed like the best "body guard" to me.

Zaeed doesn't work.  Miranda, Garrus and Jacob are the only three choices that do work.  If you listen to anything Zaeed says he tells you he's never given a rat's arse about watching anyone's back but his own and every mission he's led has gotten everyone apart from himself killed.  He's a terrible leader.

It's not like the last team Garrus led turned out that well, either. Zaeed also founded and successfully ran one of the biggest merc groups in the galaxy before being shot in the face by his partner. I like how too many people are quick to point out how *obvious* the choices are, but that's only because the game's been out awhile and many are on their second and third playthroughs.

Everybody survived on my mission, but I had considered choosing Thane as my duct guy because he seemed like he would be more experienced navigating through ducts. And I only chose Garrus as squad leader because he's my boy. I didn't even consider choosing Miranda or Jacob-- Jack's protest had me believe something bad would happen, and there was really only one part of the game that points out Jacob as being a good leader. Otherwise, they're just generic henchman 1/2.

Sounds to me that Miranda is not loyal. If you fire squad leader is not loyal the tech specialist will die. How did you handle her fight with Jack?

What about grunt? He can also be a teamleader. At least, that worked for me. And he can also escort everyone back.

I don't care if you guys survived while making some whacky choices. If you want the BEST survival chance you'll pick Jacob Miranda or Garrus. They have the highest "leader" scores.

If your lucky you can make it with other squad Leaders than the best ones i think. Im pretty sure i put Tali as a squad leader once and nobody died. The specialist always have to be the right choice though, i think.
