It's bioware for thee.In each of their game there's plenty of WTH moment. The same goes for Mass effect 2 .They probably decided to add him for the WTH batman moment and also because you're close to the last battle and they assumed you don't want to die.

Also for convenient last minute shopping before you hit the Roof.   Gotta empty that inventory somehow :D

Before he was addicted to lyrium, mabye he was a great warrior, or legion of the dead member. When surrounded by darkspawn, his past was awoken, and he went berserk.

Or maybe he just kept saying "enchantment" until the darkspawn couldnt take it anymore and kill themselves.

For the Barbarian class, Bioware cut it out because it was too imba and want concentrate their resources on DLC instead.

Alright, Here's my theory.

Remember that other lyrium-folding dwarf who sells high quality crystals? The guy says, Lyrium got into his blood, making him all fuzzy and forgetful. Same goes for the templar at the door of Denerim's Chantry. So, I can safely say that being a "savant" doesn't mean he is very powerful. All I can guess is that Bodhan died, trying to protect Sandal. This caused a brief explosion of rage in Sandal and made him slaughter all the darkspawn. Sandal reverted to his old "Enchantment!" self. I assume he forgot about Bodhan because of the Lyrium's side-effect. We can also use the information of how Bodhan found Sandal. He said that he found him in the deep roads where Lyrium is available in large quantities. Possibly, Sandal was exposed to Lyrium for a very long time and has forgotten everything including his name.

Too bad for his mother... that he didn't offer some enchantment before the Katie Couric interview.

Alright...here is a definition of SAVANT,  because it seems to me that people in this thread aren't aware of what this means:

Savant syndrome, sometimes abbreviated as savantism, is not a recognized medical diagnosis, but researcher Darold Treffert describes it as a rare condition in which people with developmental disorders have one or more areas of expertise, ability, or brilliance that are in contrast with the individual's overall limitations. Treffert says the condition can be genetic, but can also be acquired.[1]
According to Treffert, about half of all people with savant syndrome have autistic disorder, while the other half have another developmental disability, mental retardation, brain injury or disease. He says, "... not all autistic people have savant syndrome and not all people with savant syndrome have autistic disorder".[1] Other researchers state that autistic traits and savant skills may be linked,[2] or have challenged some earlier conclusions about savant syndrome as "hearsay, uncorroborated by independent scrutiny".[

Also want to mention the movie  RAINMAN,  Dustin Hoffman.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rain_Man

Just want to mention that Dustin Hoffman spent a long time studying to get into character for this role as a person with autism who is also a savant.

I was intrigued with this movie,  because I worked with mentally challenged people for about five years.    I think Dustin did a fine job with this role, but my personal opinion.

We've gone through this over and over again. Sandal has a bunch of secret grand master silverite runes, +940 dmg vs darkspawn each. If he dual wields maces/axes... then he probably has 5-9 runes on each one. Since he can enchant in the midst of battle he can throw on any runes he wants. He's got +1904 vs arch demon runes, mana clash runes, etc. And so yes, Sandal basically enchants them to death.

When I got to that part of the game I thought... all this time Bodhan was telling me he was using the wardens as protection on the roads but he just wanted to sell me over priced goods. In truth my party needed Sandal along for protection. Sandal most likely wiped out 5-6 waves of hurlocks and ogres during the dark spawn ambush at camp while we were sleeping... then those damned shrieks snuck through while Sandal was busy enchanting.

I approve of this theory since its the only one that makes sense.

Sandal probably went there with runes, remember runes can be swapped out of weapons, so he switch runes in battle to adapt into a situation. In a like of death situation people do anything to survive. Also remember that there were a bunch of knights on the roof before you got there to face the archdemon, we could assume that sandal by order of Bodain (Coin from Arl Eamon or someone else as a bribe or form of payment) had already enchanted their weapons. Furthermore in the cinematics, we see weapons already enchanted before the siege of Denerim. Sandal had enchanted a ton loads of weapons for the army.

I always considered it nothing more than a joke. The player is nearing the end of the game and needs a store for last minute preparation for the final fight and also needs the ability to change the runes. So the developers put Sandal in there to provide this and made a funny scene around it.

I don't feel the need to rationalise what he was doing there and make wild theories around it :P he's more like a game interface to me.

my take on it is following:
he is the child found in the meteorite, thus an alien.
(even if the meteorite and its sequence of fellows finding a child is DLC)
I think its inspired on Duddits from the movie Dreamcatcher

update: His father says he found him in the Deep Roads.. Well while i still think he is inspired on Duddits from Dreamcatcher, i gues he is not the child from the meteorite. :alien:
