Hey all,

I have windows 7 64 and a core i7 oc to 3.8. DA was crashing since day 1 anywhere from a few minutes of play to 30 minutes. My first reaction was that the video card was overheating (sapphire 5870). But I was monitoring the temps and they hovered in the 50-55F range so I ruled that out.

After some googling I came across the 'affinity' fix. It is the one where you launch DA, alt-tab and open task manager, right-click daorigins.exe *32, click "set processor affinity" and then disable some of your processors. So, I would disable 0,1,2,3 as per the instructions. This would obviously be different if you have a core 2 duo or something else.

I have been doing this for the past few months and DA has not crashed at all. I can play for hours, hell one time did most of the day non-stop lol. But if I forget to do it, then DA will crash 100% of the time within 30 minutes. But by now this won't happen as doing the affinity fix has become second nature to me lol.

Wanna know the really strange part? I can play Crysis 64 bit @ 1920x1200 with AA/AF & enthusiast settings and it doesn't crash.

But I'll be sure to give the "-dx9" a shot with DA. If it works, it'll save me a few seconds every time I launch DA :)

This worked for me, thanks a lot! I have an AMD triple core, setting the affinity only on the CPU 0 it never crashed again.

This also seems to have worked for me (only tried a few hours, but that's better than 5-10 minutes I was getting before.

I'm also using an AMD triple core (Athlon II 720 X3), and I set it to run with cores 1+2 (turned off core 0) and it seemed good. I'll keep experimenting if I run into issues, though.

Update: Running with 2 core on and 1 core off still gave the occasional crash, especially in some areas (not sure which ones tbh).

Changed to running with only 1 core (Core 0) and haven't had a crash since. Though, with only one core, I've noticed performance issues :(

Hi to all.

I know this is an old thread, but the the solution to my problem is so rarely mentioned (everywhere!) that I thought I should do something about it.

Starting the game with dx10 parameter did it for me. I assume dx9 would do it too.

so just to confirm greyhavens24's way:

quote:
To do this follow the following steps:

1. Right Click on the Dragon Age Origins shortcut on your desktop (or quick launch, menu item etc)
2. Choose Properties from the pop up menu.
3. Click on the shortcut tab in the properties dialogue.
4. Where the box Target: is move to the end of the line after the quote marks and put -dx9
5. The target should then read (if you installed to the default directory, other wise it will be the path to your installed directory:
32Bit Windows 7/Vista - "C:\\Program Files\\Dragon Age\\DAOriginsLauncher.exe" -dx9
64Bit Windows7/Vista - "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age\\DAOriginsLauncher.exe" -dx9
6. Click OK. Job done.

PLEASE NOTE
Make sure the -dx9 switch is OUTSIDE the quotation marks and that there is a space after the " at the end before you type the -dx9 switch
I had crashes all the time, with no solution in sight.

end of quote

As I said I tried the -dx10 switch and its working just fine and I can finally stop going crazy.

My system:

Win 7 64Bit
AMD PhenomII X3 BE @3,3GHz
Radeon 4850 with Catalyst 11.12
8GB Ram

And for the record: I tried all the other stuff (core affinity, driver updates, sound cards, and more stuff I can't even remmember anymore.)

Happy gaming

And THANKS to greyhavens24!

I recently dusted off DA:O for a full run and since the last time I had played, I had upgraded to a new PC (going from Vista to Win 7 64). On the new system I would get crashes every once in a while but I was absolutely unable to get through the final Archdemon battle (completely infuriating!). It would get below 25% health and poof - gone.

I wanted to add to the above - I tried this (the -dx9 switch) and it worked first try! So easy and no more problems!

My system:
Win 7 64bit
Intel Core i7 860 @ 2.8GHz
Radeon HD 6950 IceQ X Turbo 2GB w/ Catalyst 11.10
8GB RAM

I would like to try this since I've experienced some random crashes (and stuttering) on my brand new comp (Win7 64-bit), but how do I pull this off from a Steam install? The desktop shortcut points to Steam rather than the game exe. I've read through the whole thread but can't find an answer to this. Sorry if I missed it. I guess it has something to do with "Set launch options" in the properties - general tab, but want to be sure I do it right so don't mess something up.

@OP and any other friend who can aid me:
Hello
I was having this crashing problem, too. But when I went to Dragon Age: Origins shortcut on the desktop the texts in the Target line is greyed down. Meaning that I can't change the lines in Target at all!

Is there something else I should do to gain access to edit this Target line? Thanks.

@ all

Damn, its back. I changed nothing about my System and the crashing is back. And it seams to happen more often as I play on. I upgraded to Catalyst 12.1, changed switches (dx9 and dx10) but still crashing.
Anyone any news on this?

Win 7 64Bit
AMD PhenomII X3 BE @3,3GHz
Radeon 4850 with Catalyst 12.1
8GB Ram

@Druoga
I read on the first page:

Look in D:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\dragon age origins\\bin_ship

Of course you have to know where your steam folder is.

@FeriktheCerberus
Windows is always funny, isn't it?
Try accessing your Desktop as an admin. That should(!) do it.

It seems I (also) have to disable 2 out of my three cores to run the game without crashes.
I have tried this for several hours without a crash. And I have the feeling that my character is running faster now... ;-)
Testing on.

I also found this very helpful roundup:

Okay, probably people will shout at me for not checking but I am at the end of my knowledge. My problem is different from the regular crashes. As soon as I travel and get the archdemon dream where he 'sees' me and I get ambushed by the darkspawn with my entire team battling them without me having influence. As soon as I cancel the cutscene it crashes as well as I let it finish saying: "Dragon Age Origins has stopped working". Please, someone help me! :crying:

Ps: I'm just a simple guy I have absolutely 0% knowledge about a computer... So even if you start asking me 'what kind of ... do you have' I won't be able to answer. Yes, I'm just that dense...:crying::crying::crying:

We can help, but to do so, please:

a) Create a new post
B) Include all the needed information as outlined in the "Read First" post pinned to the top of the forum.
c) In your case, I'd make sure to include if you're using any mods or had any other system problems seemingly unrelated to Dragon Age.

This thread is very old and covers a variety of stuff. Locking.
