At first I could not get this game to install, the installer kept crashing with a data corrupt error message. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit). I turned off all background tasks, disabled services....deleted my temp directory blah.blah.blah....still no good.  I was hoping Bioware was going to use a different installer for this game, had the same issues with Mass Effect, installer kept crashing on me.

A bit of good news...........

I was able to manually install this game using Winrar to unpack the game to the default directory but I still received error messages for corrupted files. When the game booted up I noticed their are rampant missing textures on characters. The game appears to run fine just a major problem with the games visuals.

Anyone know how to fix this pls?

I had a similar problem, but rather than get an error message the installer would simply exit. I did nothing different to remedy the situation, it simply took the 4th try to complete installation. No idea why.

I reinstalled the game a second time again using Winrar, the game is running - the missing uniform textures are fixed but I still had corrupted files during this second install phase. This time the result seems to be some missing animations in the characters during dialog and cut-scenes. My characters don't walk but glide across the floor and your dog (playing the human noble character) doesn't have any animations and also glides across the floor. I patched the game but it doesn't fix the missing animations. I'm sure if I ever get a clean install (no errors) for this game these problems won't exist.

Now the game is crashing once I get to the first major area after the prelude in the castle..........Sigh guess I'm going to have to contact EA support via email. This is so frustrating, never had a problem getting Bioware games to play till they made "a deal with the devil" aka EA and things went downhill from here. If I knew I was again going to have this problem with the PC version installing I would have bought the inferior 360 or PS3 version.

I found out they were selling the PC version of Mass Effect on Steam for half price this weekend. I had all kinds of problems when I bought the DVD version with the saferun error during the installation. ME used the same kind of unzipping install as this game. I just bought the game again off Steam for $10. I've had great success with games bought from there and this version of ME installed flawlessly and I've played it for a couple of hours with zero problems. KIcking myself for not buying Dragon Age off of Steam now :(

Have you given the EA Download Manager a shot? If not then it would be worth a shot. It's not a steam install, but its a digital download version.

http://eastore.ea.com/eadm

Download the DM at that link, login with your EA user name and password and then use the Key from your manual to activate the digital download. It will then let you install that way without the DVD.

Are you saying I can download the game from the EA Store without paying for it again?

yessir. Just download the EADM from that link above and use your cdkey from the retail disk and you can. You'll want to uninstall the Disc version first.

Good luck, and yeah, probably one of the most consumer friendly things EAs ever done.

Downloading the game now, can I quit and come back to download later and not lose my progress.

If this works I can't thank you enough :) I agree it's a great feature if you lose the game disk.

You should be able to quit and come back to download later. It caches all the files in the directory you chose ( or its default directory under .. users I think ) I hope it works. I knew you could do it, but I haven't had any problems so I can't say for sure.

BTW. Found this so you might want to follow these instructions if it doesn't work:

Professor_Xavier2 wrote...

I finally got to install it. It was a combination of things. I would advise ppl with the downloadeable version by EADM and in Windows Vista 64 bits to do this:

STEP 1 - Download 7-ZIP File Manager. In order to help you identify corrupted data not only in .rar files, but also in .cab and .exe files

STEP 2 - Go to Control Panel, then system and choose avanced systems settings. In the advanced tab choose Performance and hit the config/properties button. Go to the DEP - Data Execution Prevention tab and choose the option: "Activate to all programs, except the ones i choose". Click "add" and now choose EADM (should be called "core.exe" but with the EADM green globe symbol)

STEP 3 - Download the game with EADM but don't install it. Go to your HD (probably C:/) then to Program Data (not program files), then Eletronic Arts/EADM/Cache/{whatever}/Dragonagedlx_dd. Copy Dragonagedlx_dd folder to your desktop.

STEP 4 - Test ALL files with the .exe, .dll, .msi, .rar extensions within Dragonagedlx_dd folder using 7-ZIP File Manager (simply right click the file and choose 7-Z and test files). Delete any file that 7-ZIP finds corrupt.

STEP 5 - Clear the EADM Cache folder (by simply clicking in the "x" button next to the game in the EADM window) and download the game again.

STEP 6 - Once the download is finished, test the files in Program Data/Eletronic Arts/EADM/Cache/{whatever}/Dragonagedlx_dd with 7-ZIP (again simply right click the file and choose 7-Z and test files)

STEP 7 - Now replace the corrupted files you found at Desktop/Dragonagedlx_dd folder with it's uncorrupted counterparts stored in Program Data/Eletronic Arts/EADM/Cache/{whatever}/Dragonagedlx_dd.

STEP 8 - Repeat STEPs 5 to 7 untill all files in your Desktop/Dragonagedlx_dd folder are uncorrupted.

STEP 9 - Right click setup.exe (with a Dragon Age Shield symbol) in Desktop/Dragonagedlx_dd folder and choose Properties and hit the compatibility tab. Choose Compatibility mode (Win XP SP2) then install and play the game.

Hope it works for you as it is for me.

Sure hope it works, don't really want to have to resort to those complicated/confusing steps.

I already tried using 7-zip and used the test feature to scan each of the files. Funny thing one time the file would list errors and a rescan it registered as fine. Something real funky is going on here.

Lets hope I won't have to refer to this to get the game to work.

Wow it says 5 hours to go till the game is downloaded and I have a very fast internet connection.

Sadly getting the game using the EA downloader didn't fix the problem, installer still quits with a data error on the first file at the 25% interval.

When I ran 7-zip and scanned the downloaded file archives I received several errors. Atleast I know my DVD isn't the problem.

I can't waist anymore time on this, the problem is in EA Tech Support hands now. I really wanted to play this game this weekend.

I'm getting the same data file error as everyone else. I'm not real happy right now, mostly with EA customer service. If their going to put on their open tickets, "You will recieve a response within 24 hours", I think they should at least respond in the stated time frame.

Anyhow, I'm going to keep trying to redownload it each day while I'm at work and reinstall it each evening to see if I can finally get it to avoid the data error. A couple of people on other threads said it took 3 or 4 times downloading and installing, but it finally would work. A pain in the butt solution, but I hope it works for me.

Well the store where I bought the game has agreed to let me exchange it for the 360 or PS3 version ( I happen to own both consoles). I still would have liked to play the PC version, better controls, graphics but this is the next best thing.

After C&C3, I have had nothing but problems with EA games. Due to the same crappy installer I was never able to install Mass Effect. Red Alert3 and the expansion Uprising installed fine but both games would crash after a few minutes playing skirmish mode. In all three cases EA Support was not able to provide a solution. Ironically I was finally able to play Mass Effect after I bought it this weekend for $10 off Steam. The Steam version used a totally different installation method and I was able to play the game without any problems. I bet if I had bought Dragon Age off of Steam I would be playing the game right now but I don't think there is a way to use my current CD key and avoid having to pay for the game again like you can with the EA Digital Download Store.

Bioware I still love you but EA can just go to.............................
