then the creepy tali and garrus obsessives finally got their dream and in the second game not only were they were possible romance options but also thane, miranda and jacob so the romance mechanic became more important and integral to the story and now conversation about the actual game mechanics is far outnumbered by freaking LI discussion.
theres 1060 goddamn pages discussing tali, filled to the brim with fanart, fanfiction and demanding that tali stays alive. its because of crap like this that theres no real story progression in ME2, nobody even has to die and its ridiculously easy to keep everyone alive. If tali, garrus or any other character dies THEN IT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN, its called a STORY.
same with old characters returning and people complaining about their changes, "WAAAH LIARA IS NO LONGER MY SWEET AND INNOCENT LOVE". the story changed her shes grown up, done things and changed. its called character progression.
bioware doesnt owe it to you to keep love interests the same, or give you more or make previous characters suddenly have romantic feelings towards you.
MASS EFFECT IS NOT A DATING SIM.
leave this creepy romantic feelings towards a virtual character to the JRPG and anime fans. stop demanding characters be kept around or be more important in the next game. stop demanding and asking that any recurring or somewhat important character be romanceable and LET BIOWARE TELL THEIR GODDAMN STORY.
I loved the fact that characters were always going to die in ME1 and you had to decide who live and who wouldnt and i have no doubt the reason its so easy to keep everyone alive in this game is just so they dont step on any creepy fantics toes. its a shame that what will possibly be one of the best trilogies ever will have its story telling watered down to allow people to keep every character they like.
yes, they do want you to be able to decide the outcome of your game but not to the degree where they cant force you to make any real gamechanging decisions just so you can keep getting alien tail.
now go ahead and dismiss this entire post and bump the the dedicated character threads up 5 more pages and make threads asking Dr.chakwas and joker to be LI in me3 or even ask for more graphic sex scenes some more.

If someone finds the relationships the most compelling part of the game for them, there's nothing wrong with that at all.

The reason people are so dismissive of this post is because it's not the first, and each one always says the same thing (the inevitable "DATING SIM DERP" argument.) If you want a real discussion you may want to avoid using phrases like that; it's divisive.
That said, people discuss romances because interpersonal relationships resonate with the masses. Not everyone can be bothered to understand heatsink mechanics or discuss the philosophical quandaries of geth sentience, as fascinating as those things are. But everyone understands what a relationship is.

And OP, you could just ignore the topic. Not like you have to read it. =/

ME has a canon, but one of its shining qualities as an RPG is the fact that you are free to create your own as well, with just as much validity.

There's nothing to argue. Its your opinion and you're entitled to it. Thats what opinions are.
But just because you have an opinion it doesnt mean that anyone who has a different one is wrong somehow. The beauty of games like Mass Effect is that they tailor themselves to the person playing it and how they choose to play. Your game isn't my game.

To be serious, though, I agree the obsession with romances sometimes gets a little...annoying. I don't mind them in game. They're optional and they aren't a major part of the game, but some people seem to talk about them as if the game should just become a dating sim.

My point is in every story there are fundamental elements that draw people. Action, drama, and of course romances are integral parts of most every story. Every action movie usually has a woman involved in some matter. Dramas revolve around romance, tragedies even more so. The need for romantic contact is a part of our nature and that is reflected in our entertainment and art. What would your rather us talk about? Wow, that biotic slam was so awesome, dropped that chick right into the ocean!!!!
Anyway, romances have always been in Bioware games. They are major plot points and usually are well written (moreso than other games) and rewarding. Stop the hate crimes!!!
