i like pie
I read this whole thread and I believe that Forsakerr has summed it up perfectly way back on page two.
BTW.....On the off chance that there is pie in ME3, I hope it is romanceable

seriously, in the first game the romance mechanic was such a minor subplot to the actual game and didnt even really matter. that didnt stop people obsessing over characters overly creepy manner but i could deal i with it, a little bit of fandom never hurt anyone and people still talked about the games other features alot.
then the creepy tali and garrus obsessives finally got their dream and in the second game not only were they were possible romance options but also thane, miranda and jacob so the romance mechanic became more important and integral to the story and now conversation about the actual game mechanics is far outnumbered by freaking LI discussion.
theres 1060 goddamn pages discussing tali, filled to the brim with fanart, fanfiction and demanding that tali stays alive. its because of crap like this that theres no real story progression in ME2, nobody even has to die and its ridiculously easy to keep everyone alive. If tali, garrus or any other character dies THEN IT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN, its called a STORY.
same with old characters returning and people complaining about their changes, "WAAAH LIARA IS NO LONGER MY SWEET AND INNOCENT LOVE". the story changed her shes grown up, done things and changed. its called character progression.
bioware doesnt owe it to you to keep love interests the same, or give you more or make previous characters suddenly have romantic feelings towards you.
MASS EFFECT IS NOT A DATING SIM.
leave this creepy romantic feelings towards a virtual character to the JRPG and anime fans. stop demanding characters be kept around or be more important in the next game. stop demanding and asking that any recurring or somewhat important character be romanceable and LET BIOWARE TELL THEIR GODDAMN STORY.
I loved the fact that characters were always going to die in ME1 and you had to decide who live and who wouldnt and i have no doubt the reason its so easy to keep everyone alive in this game is just so they dont step on any creepy fantics toes. its a shame that what will possibly be one of the best trilogies ever will have its story telling watered down to allow people to keep every character they like.
yes, they do want you to be able to decide the outcome of your game but not to the degree where they cant force you to make any real gamechanging decisions just so you can keep getting alien tail.
now go ahead and dismiss this entire post and bump the the dedicated character threads up 5 more pages and make threads asking Dr.chakwas and joker to be LI in me3 or even ask for more graphic sex scenes some more.
Banned for telling me what to like in a video game.

You might have noticed but no matter how interesting a movie or TV show is for its other aspects the thing people most talk about is the romance and sex stuff....so it is with this medium.

So, so true.
Would work better as a venn diagram though, I fall into at least two of those categories.

I think the romances should stay they add more depth to the game.
I agree. And here's the reason (Very long post incomming, TL;DR section at the bottom):
Without romances and in-depth character involvement/developement the entire Mass Effect trilogy would just be another Half-Life clone. You travel from place to place following a fixed storyline and exploring a few areas for secrets and bonus items. From time to time your constant shooting is interrupted by a brief dialogue that you have no control over, but acts as guidance from one objective to another. That about sums up all shooters including the Mass Effect trilogy.
What sets Mass Effect aside from any generic shooter is the character involvement/developement. As the main character (you) explore the world/universe, in which the story takes place, you meet people. How you choose to interact with these people changes the in-depth story, but have little to no effect on the overall storyline. This holds true for both Mass Effect and most other RPG's out there. But Mass Effect takes it one step further. Since your actions in Mass Effect 1 have consequences in Mass Effect 2 and later on in Mass Effect 3, most in-depth story changes also change the overall storyline.
This is a brilliant way to convince the fans and players to involve themselves in the story. The simple act of compassion you can show to the Rachni Queen on Noveria doing Mass Effect 1 results in a dialogue with an asari during Mass Effect 2 informing you that the Rachni are rebuilding and preparing their armies to help you against the Reapers in Mass Effect 3. It is a very small action in Mass Effect 1, but it have a great impact on the continued storyline of the Mass Effect trilogy.
Since character involvement/developement and in-depth story actions play a big part in the overall storyline of the Mass Effect trilogy, it goes without saying that the main characters attitude, feelings, oppinion and interrest in his/her crew/companions will also shape the continued storyline of the Mass Effect trilogy. It is only natural that the main character develop different relationships with those around him/her. Just like social life in the real world, you will have friends and enemies. Some of your friends will be close friends while others are more distant. Some friendships will even turn into love-affairs or long-lasting lovers.
BioWare have thought of this and have decided that what you can experience as a person in the real world should also be possible in the Mass Effect trilogy. We have yet to see someone try to mug Commander Shephard, but I guess that possibility is either reserved for Mass Effect 3 or have been left out intentionally. Maybe we will see more cross-NPC interaction in Mass Effect 3 than we have in the past two games. I hope we do, since it will add another touch of reality to the game.
I think most true RPG fans/players will agree with me that an in-game romance is something you should never pass up on. And while the Mass Effect trilogy attracts both Shooter fans and RPG fans alike, it is safe to say that the core of BioWare's fans have always been hardcore RPG fans, dating back to the initial Baldur's Gate, with many of the fans having played "Dungeons and Dragons" before that. BioWare have a reputation for creating great RPGs and they will continue to expand the RP posibilities of all their RPGs, regardless of complaints from fanatics from other genres. RPG fans ARE BioWare and they are us. Simple.
TL;DR:
And this might come as a big shock to the OP and some others:
Take any generic RPG, introduce as much RP-realism as possible, add a bunch of RPG fans
as players and what you get is a whole lot of character
involvement/developement as each player rewrites the storyline through
concious choices made through-out the game.
