Especially the responses to that kind of threads are hilarious!

Agreed.

A valid point.  Romance subplots are just fine, but they should remain subplots.  If I wanted a soap opera set in space, I'd watch that sh!tty new Stargate spin-off, or Battlestar Galactica.
Bioware should know that some of us appreciate Mass Effect for being one of the only decent sci-fi properties property out there right now.

zhijn, what i was saying isn't that i hate seeing them or reading them because i dont even come here that often. my point is that it is Actually affecting the game so that they keep making romance more and more important in the game and in turn focusing less on actually gameplay mechanics.

oh yeah, we have 6 LI's now but still not good solution to the mako/probe problem. plus the choices in ME2 seem so goddamn unimportant and nothing really happens to your characters depending on what choices you make, and yeah its possible for everyone to die but its perfectly possible to keep everyone alive on your first play through. i want life or death situations and choices and everyone else is just screaming "I WANNA BONE JOKER AND SEE TALI'S FACE".

"LET BIOWARE TELL THEIR GODDAMN STORY"

Uh...you reminded me of Zaeed when I read that...

You know you don't have to talk to people or romance anyone right?

Zaeed and you have a lot of pent up anger...just go shoot something.

Or buy a pure FPS - that might make you feel better.

Also, as other people pointed out, you can completely dismiss romances if you so desire. No game in Bioware's history has FORCED you to have a romance. Usually though it means you miss important character dialogue, a few quests, and general story development (though less so in ME). In Baldurs Gate, if you didn't have a romance you basically missed a books worth of story and conversation.

I remember when Fox freaked out because of ME1. That was funny.

Funny thing, what will people talk about. We think we have a lot of topics. But we really don't. So fawning over things and being obessed about innane things will happen. If we only discussed "intelligent and constructive subjects" then every thread will be about Tali.. opps.. I meant.. the forums will be pretty light with people asking for the 100th time how to survive the Suicide mission, last comment 3 days ago.

As much as it may be scary to admit, the thing you are criticising is the very thing that creates a lifeblood in the community. Otherwise we are just a bunch strangers that played the same game. So like.. not sure what that means.

To be honest he brings a fair point about people complaining about *enter character here* changing or not being important enough. Bioware has got some damn good writers and they know how to tell a story. Also the fact is people change in real life in ways we might not like.I liked how Bioware handled the character development in ME2 (particularly Liara) by evolving them. You can control the character of Shepard but not the character of everyone around you.

I don't believe the OP is against romances in the game in general.

seriously, in the first game the romance mechanic was such a minor subplot to the actual game and didnt even really matter. that didnt stop people obsessing over characters overly creepy manner but i could deal i with it, a little bit of fandom never hurt anyone and people still talked about the games other features alot.

then the creepy tali and garrus obsessives finally got their dream and in the second game not only were they were possible romance options but also thane, miranda and jacob so the romance mechanic became more important and integral to the story and now conversation about the actual game mechanics is far outnumbered by freaking LI discussion.

theres 1060 goddamn pages discussing tali, filled to the brim with fanart, fanfiction and demanding that tali stays alive. its because of crap like this that theres no real story progression in ME2, nobody even has to die and its ridiculously easy to keep everyone alive. If tali, garrus or any other character dies THEN IT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN, its called a STORY.

same with old characters returning and people complaining about their changes, "WAAAH LIARA IS NO LONGER MY SWEET AND INNOCENT LOVE".  the story changed her shes grown up, done things and changed. its called character progression.

bioware doesnt owe it to you to keep love interests the same, or give you more or make previous characters suddenly have romantic feelings towards you.

MASS EFFECT IS NOT A DATING SIM.

leave this creepy romantic feelings towards a virtual character to the JRPG and anime fans. stop demanding characters be kept around or be more important in the next game. stop demanding and asking that any  recurring or somewhat important character be romanceable and LET BIOWARE TELL THEIR GODDAMN STORY.

I loved the fact that characters were always going to die in ME1 and you had to decide who live and who wouldnt and i have no doubt the reason its so easy to keep everyone alive in this game is just so they dont step on any creepy fantics toes. its a shame that what will possibly be one of the best trilogies ever will have its story telling watered down to allow people to keep every character they like.

yes, they do want you to be able to decide the outcome of your game but not to the degree where they cant force you to make any real gamechanging decisions just so you can keep getting alien tail.

now go ahead and dismiss this entire post and bump the the dedicated character threads up 5 more pages and make threads asking Dr.chakwas and joker to be LI in me3 or even ask for more graphic sex scenes some more.

THE SHOOTING OBSESSION NEEDS TO STOP! I MEAN, WHY DO WE EVEN HAVE SHOOTING AT ALL! THIS IS AN RPG NOT A TPS! ANYONE WHO DOESN'T THINK LIKE I DO IS STUPID. I HAVE NO LIFE SO I HAVE ALL KINDS OF TIME TO WASTE WRITING BIG WALLS OF TEXT!

Further reproduction of people who go through life feeling a sense of entitlement regarding their imagined right to dictate to others how to go about their own lives has to stop.

oh I don't know, I think it's a testament to bioware's writing that they can conjure up such interesting characters that evoke such strong emotions in people. Keep in mind that this is a ROLE PLAYING GAME, relationships, platonic or no, add to the role playing element, and immerse players in the environment of the game.

People complaining about the fact that it's possible to save every crew member are amusing. Or saddening, depends.

If you don't want a happy end, don't upgrade your ship, or put Grunt into the vent, put Morinth in charge of the fireteams, and let Jacob try to do the biotic part. Don't forget not to do any loyal missions. You'll get all the life/death situations you could wish for.

I, personally, like happy ends, and would find it quite lame if it were impossible to achieve one.

You can just turn down their advances in-game or just not pursue it.
Also I've said it before, I will say it again; It's fandom. Stuff like this is typical in anything, you can ignore it if it bothers you.

Bioware will do what they want with their own game. If they decide that they should add more romances at the expense of gameplay because the fans want more romances, then your problem is with them, not the fans themselves. Now, I'm not saying this is the case, but if the majority of people want romances even at the expense of gameplay, then that's what they want. They're not wrong, they just have different priorities to you. So, in conclusion, QQ more.

If anyone played Dragon Age, having some sort of romantic connection to Morrigan was pretty critical story wise.

First off, you don't have to romance anyone.

Secondly, don't read the posts if they're romance related.  Simply skim the headlines on the forums like I do and ignore the romance threads.

Plenty of posts on here that aren't related to romance.

Finally, go find a good shrink and take your meds.
