I was just watching the finale of the first season of the new Doctor Who series, and I noticed an interesting thematical similarity to Mass Effect, almost to the point where I think that the lead writers saw this and took conscious or subconscious influence from it. See for yourself.

Dalek Emperor: "We waited here, in the Dark Space, damaged but rebuilding. Centuries passed, and we quietly infiltrated the systems of Earth, harvesting the waste of humanity. The prisoners, the refugees, the dispossessed, they all came to us. The bodies were filtered, pulped, shifted. The seed of the human race has perverted, only one cell in a billion was fit to be nurtured!"
The Doctor: "So you created an army of daleks out of the dead."

The unusual term "dark space" is used, though here it just means running silent in the interplanetary void, not between galaxies. And then there is the way humans are used as seeds to make daleks. I'm not saying it's a ripoff or anything -  there are lots of things that don't match at all - but if it's not deliberate influence, then it's a hell of a coincidence, or so it seems to me.

Not really. BG is about the Cylons attacking humanity. To get the most accurate comparison you have to compare the first war between humanity & Cylons to the geth vs quarians.

If the geth are the ME version of the Cylons was the first geth made from the VI/AI of some quarian's daughter?

I love the similiarity between the geth & Cylons.

I've watched all the various incarnations of Doctor Who going all the way to the Black and White one's back in the 60's.

Sure but the concept of an entire race wandering through space aboard a fleet of ships because their homeworld was taken over by their mechanical slave race is essentially taken from (or inspired by if you will)  BSG.

I saw that episode of Doctor Who as well but did'nt make the connection. It's not surprising, the Daleks want exactly the same thing as the Reapers (to exterminate every living thing) are also machine-orgainic hybrids and also have a knack for overdramatism. The reapers are basically Daleks that are actually suited for the job.
Also, you cant make jokes about Repaers looking like peppershakers.

The Daleks > The Reapers.

Tis true, you just can't beat that voice.

no offense but any scifi idea was written about 100 years ago in every country, fiction is rarely original. its more important how it is delivered and mass effect delivers way better than any mid-budget tv show. no offense to them, but mass effect is legendary status

If this was Mass Effect 1 I'd disagree with you but I thought 2 seriously fleshed out their universe.

That being said Daleks are still better. ;)

I actually noticed that similarity a while ago, having watched that episode when it first aired (your not the only one who loves Doctor Who) but I didn't feel the urge to mention it considering Bioware's plethora of sci-fi rip-offs. Between the Blade Runner Ship reference, the obvious nod to Riddick with Jack, the Starship Troopers missions from ME1, and the ironic similarities between Soverign and Unicron...the Daleks being like the Reapers is just another ripoff to add to a long list.

Dont get me wrong, I completely agree with your theory...I just wouldnt be surprised if its 100% true.

As a serious Dr. Who fan, I stopped paying much attention to it when it turned into Eastenders in space.

And Monte Cook might have something to say about Dark Space from back in the early 1990's RPG days.

Good catch, though.

Daleks and Reapers aren equal. Yes they're both evil, but Reapers don't go "Exterminate!" every time they see someone. And Daleks don't "Assume Direct Control".

Besides, we all know Shepard can kick their asses. But the Doctor rocks!!

Homages, not rip-offs. Posted Image
I thought this was obscure enough, at least for the Americans, to be worth mentioning.
There are closer equivalents to the Reapers in science fiction, but you have to admit that they share the love for monologuing with the Daleks.

As a serious Dr. Who fan

Isn't that an oxymoron? Taking Doctor Who seriously sounds like failing to enjoy the series in the first place. Though I wasn't around to see the series in its earliest glory days, I have watched and compared enough to say that the Tenth Doctor's run was easily equal to most of his predeccessors.

Hehh...This got me thinking about how the Doctor would beat the Reapers; he'd probably talk them to death.

That mid-budget TV show has been universally recognized as having laid the foundation for some of the best SF written over the past Forty Years. Some of the best writers working in SF today wear their DW fandom proudly. With the amount of shout-outs to classic Sci-Fi that have made their way into BIOWARE games it can be said without a trace of hyperbole that sans the benchmarks set by that little mid-budget tv-show you might not have the innovative classic your currently enjoying.

I think the reference is a little out there. Though saying that, having seen the travesty that was Doctor Who's rip off of Pitch Black, the Doctor Who writers are in line for a bit of being plagiarised!

I will say that Omega is clearly based off of Blade Runner Earth.

Which is why I love it so.

No question there. I'm pretty sure that the devs even confirmed it.

I think that the Daleks would at some point go to Davros to whine for a Reality Bomb, or something...

I have to admit I liked the new guy. He did a nice blend of the earlier evil scientist Davros and the later raging megalomaniac interpretation.

To everyone who thinks that the reapers can beat the daleks I got two words

"Time War"

The war between the Daleks and the Time Lords

The war that almost wiped out both races

The war that the Eternals Feared

The war that ripped Space and Time

In my opinion The Suicide Mission is hardly a fraction of what the Time War is.

Not really. the Daleks seek to become masters of space and time and exterminate everything that is "impure" (basically, anything that isn't a Dalek.) The Reapers have already conquered the galaxy and wiped out other sentient species, probably more than once. They let starfaring civilizations grow and then come to harvest everything.
