I'm almost done with my first playthrough and reading these forums has
gotten me excited to try my hand at Insanity.  Before I charge ahead,
though, I have a concern that could limit how much I'm willing to depend on my squad.

I have my squad mates set to use their powers at my command /
defensively, but I have two serious problems with employing their
abilities.

1) Delays.  I frequently order my squadmates to strip
defenses from the nastier enemies, but they delay so long in doing so
that the enemy makes it behind cover and then the squad power (say,
Shock) fizzles uselessly against the cover and goes on cooldown.

Any suggestions on how I can minimize or overcome these deadly delays?

2)
Fizzles. I brought Jacob with me for the Reaper IFF mission and I
expected his Area Pull to completely lay waste to the husks.  After I
ordered him to use it, it would frequently go on cooldown 2 seconds
later with no effect that I could see. Certainly not to the target I
specified.  The husks obviously aren't using cover and they aren't
armored at the difficulty I'm playing, so I'm not sure what the issue
is.

Area Pull effectiveness breakdown:
40% Unavailable because Jacob used his Barrier before I could stop him
40% Pull doesn't go off but Jacob's powers cool down (Did Jacob ignore my orders and cast Barrier instead?  Not sure)

    20% Effective

If anyone can give me hints to help ensure that my squad powers happen when I want them to happen, 'twould be much appreciated.

Unfortunately defensive skillz can't be turned off, but what you can do is stuff him in a corner so he doesn't lose his shield. and remember that thier specials fire from your perspective, so if you're behind a wall, quite frequently the special attack will just hit the wall and not the intended target... (and if this is a "pull" you won't even see it) Generally if I take special heavy squadmates (Typically Miranda and Samara) I stuff 'em in the corner and hotkey thier attacks with mine.

I have the same problem on the PC. I am just overcoming the learning curve for the PC controls but this bugged me as well.

On the 360 the squad powers are used nearly instantaneously. I think it may have to do with whether you use a hotkey or you press pause.

I think, in order to help you, we need to know which class you plan to roll on Insanity. On the later difficulties Jacob is far from useful (in my opinion). The squadmates will always use their defensive abilities unfortunately.

I rarely, if ever, pause to give commands. I'll try using pause more often to see if I can tell a difference.

As for "fire from your perspective", I'm not sure I believe that. I have no trouble asking my squad to use their powers against exposed enemies while I'm tucked safely behind cover... the only issue is when the enemy decides to take cover themselves before my squad gets off their duffs to follow my orders.

The squad AI does fire powers from Shepard's perspective. It can easily be tested if you need proof

I kept an eye on it and now I see what you mean. Nice to know I don't necessarily have to place my team to have line of sight to my target!

Thanks for the tip
