This is an impossible request. There. I said it. >.< No matter how many games I list, I'll miss something.
Ballblazer
Clash at Demonhead
Blaster Master
Gauntlet
Mega Man 2
Phantasy Star
Batman (NES version)
Bad News Baseball
Super Mario Bros. 3
Desert Falcon
Robotron 2084
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
Q-Bert
Ninja Gaiden
Metroid
River City Ransom
Contra
I avoided going higher than 8-bit consoles. This list can go on much longer but it would be pointless to endlessly write every game I enjoyed until I ran out of ideas. Of the above my favorites are Clash at Demonhead, Castlevania 2, and Metroid. All three games had large world maps with lots to explore and many items to play with. Although the games are in reality, quite linear, the illusion of freedom was well done and let me feel truly in control. Plus, it helped that I liked all three protagonists.

Megaman 2. Anyone who plays on "normal" is a chump. That's Japanese Easy mode, and they didn't have Easy in Japan!

Circus Atari. The sound that the clowns made when they went "SPLAAATT!" on the ground was hilarious.
I also loved Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back on Atari, and spent many hours killing Space Invaders and shooting Asteroids.

Well....since people are going a bit not..so...classic...and putting games like Half-Life...etc...here's my list of all-time classics. These games are still pretty dang old.....
1. Planescape Torment (There has been no RPG that can surpass it..not even Dragon Age or Mass Effect 2 )
2. System Shock 2 (has got to be one of the most scariest games ever made)
3. Fallout 1/ Fallout 2
4. Gothic 2 and Gothic 2: Night of the Raven
5. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for N64
6. Golden Eye for N64 (Seriously! Proximity mines were da sheyat!)
7. Resident Evil Code Veronica for Dreamcast.
Although I have to say Resident Evil 4 (gamecube) and Resident evil remake (gamecube) were my favorites. But Code Veronica was what drew me in.
8. Ninja Gaiden 1 for NES
9. Silent Hill 2 (the best plot out of the entire Silent Hill series)
10. Serious Sam 1 (HELL YES!!!!!!)
11. NBA JAM for the super NES (Boomshakalaka!!!)
12. Duke Nukem (get them dolla bills!)
13. Leisure Suit Larry 7 (Seriously one of the most hilarious games I've played.) The jokes got funnier as I grew older as I began to understand things more.
14. Deus Ex (the first one)
15. Street Fighter Puzzle Fighter

X-Com - Enemy Unknown (I think it was UFO Defense in america). That game is pure gold, and I still play it quite regularly. With my antique 386.
If it finds its way to GOG, I'm so totally buying it for my laptop....

After reading Petehog's list I'll throw a nod to one modern game: Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. Best falling block puzzle offshoot I've seen. Capcom included so many of their characters in it, and managed to give them all different block patterns, levels, and music. It oozed with personality, and is, to this day, one of the few puzzle games I could play against friends with for hours.
It even spawned a cutesy fighting game, as Petehog noted above. I didn't enjoy that one as much though.

It really depends on how you define classic.
Is Zork classic? Beyond Zork is my favorite game that doesnt' have graphics (well, it has more graphics than the previous Zork games, but it's simply white boxes and lines.)
How about King's Quest?
F-Zero?
Planetfall was an excellent game as well.
I think I'll go with Joust. I loved Joust when I was a kid.

Yeah well when I said classic I realized that term was " relative " to whoever was posting at the time. So if someone was born in 1995 then I suppose games today will be very classic for them it is just all a matter of opinion.
