Do you think the Garrus and Tali romances were just fan service?

I think they both seemed a bit far fetched.  Tali didn't show any romantic interest in Shepard at all in Mass Effect 1 and all of the sudden she falls in love with him in Mass Effect 2?  So much so that she's willing to risk her life scrogging him?
Also, Turians are probably the least looking humanoid aliens in the galaxy yet he and Shepard agree to scrog?

I have nothing against these romances being included as fan service of course.  I just have trouble taking them seriously.

Yeah, i agree with the Tali part. But, i'm not complaining that they let me do her this time around, shes more interesting than all of the other LI's granted to us so far.

IIRC Tali was supposed to be an LI in ME, so no in that regard. You don't have to show romantic interest in somehow to like them in regards to Tali...she's the shy, quiet type, remember?

I wouldn't say she 'suddenly' falls in love with him. Starting with ME1, 2 years to reflect, and then through the events in ME2 (especially if you manage to keep her from being exiled). Her and Garrus have both been through a LOT with Shepard, so I don't see them shallow. If anything, they make more sense than the Jacob/Thane/Miranda romances, IMO.

All romances are fan service.

they needed something to hold onto from the first game I am assuming. Also I would say in the first game the romance was merely a concept that they are trying to build upon in ME2 and ME3.

Yes I do believe it had to do with demand from the fans, but maybe Drew (the original lead writer for ME1 and the ME novels) himself wasn't even sure if Garrus or Tali would eventually fall in love with Shepard, maybe he himself thought «Heh, why not?», but this is just speculation on my part.

Yes. Think about it, the only two returning members of Shepard's old crew are the two members that fans have begged to be love interests. I don't think that either were ever really considered options for romance (developers did say that they considered Tali during production, but then again hundreds of things are considered during production that never make it in to the game), but the fans wanted it and BioWare made it work.

actually Tali was supposed to be a Love interest in ME1 ...but was then removed because the developers thought people would not have liked to romance a girl with inverted knees/chicken legs

Tali grows onto you like the rest of the team members, you have been fighting a war for roughly a year ( aka ME1 ), romance her, you'll get the idea

she's been watching you for long time

I disagree completely about Tali in ME1. I didn't have another relationship on my first playthrough because the connection felt so strong between her and my Shepard. The relationship in ME2 just confirmed it.

And wasn't in my head entirely either. As Dr. V pointed out, Tali was originally planned as an ME1 romance.

Yes I do believe they were fanservice.

Tali I can understand having some feelings for Shephard, but not that she'd rip her suit off, or that the game-lore would even let her without more than some snivels.

Tali was originally intended to be a LI in ME1 (or at least, the idea was passed around). But they feared her mask, and "chicken legs" would be off-putting to fans. When she received so much love and adoration on the forums, they took notice and went on with the LI. So yes, it is mostly a fan service. But I feel it works just fine, and isn't forced. I always loved Tali, even from ME1. Garrus does seem more of a spur-of-the-moment "ohhai" kind of love.. But then again, the LI mostly begins with Garrus and femshep agreeing on a one night stand, to ease tension before the battle. Then they begin to actually fall for each other. It all works out in the end I believe.

It is fanservice, but well done fanservice.

Also it feels believable, at least on Tali's romance.

I have to say there's nothing far-fetched about it. Humans love aliens, is it so unbelievable that an alien would fall for a human?

Fan service sounds negative. If it weren't for the sheer amount of fans these character'd have, I'm sure they wouldn't have been love interests. But they didn't do it just to pander to fans.

If you get my drift.

i agree....I thought there was love between shep and tali all through ME 1.   Hers makes the most sense out of all the LI for both games in my opinion

The story goes that Bioware originally planned for Tali to be a love interest in ME1 brain storming session, but the dev teams concensus was that no one would be interested in aliens that weren't mostly human.

Later on they found Tali and Garrus were accepted and popular, much more than they expected.

So yeh, they included them for the fans.

I could think of worse scenarios, than a company doing something for the fans, rather than being contrary just to say they didn't base a game on fan input.

Exactly. This is pretty much the reason the whole Talimance fan phenomenon irks me, as I don't much like the idea of BW's final product being changed story-wise to fit what fans want.

Not every relationship is love at first sight. People develop feelings for each other over time. Tali was a little young in the first game as well, and if viewed by human standards may have seemed a girl to Shepard. Now she has matured.

At any rate, Im glad they did it, at least on the Tali side, as she's the only female squaddie LI in both games whose personality isn't repellent.

Yet, I suspect you would complain anyway if the final product wasn't what you wanted?

I think that is Biowares position, they design the game in part to please fans and hope others feel the same or at least like the game anyway.

Or they don't listen to any fans, purposely not include things that fans want, and still hope that someone likes the game?

Dunno, what would you do as a dev, and how would you convince fans that you did what you wanted to do, even when their decisions did cross paths with fan wishes.
