Do you think the Garrus and Tali romances were just fan service?

While either way its not for a good story-driven reason, there's also a development issue encouraging Tali and Garrus being the only ones to return - they're the only must-haves in your party for the entire game that can't die off.

Exactly. This is pretty much the reason the whole Talimance fan phenomenon irks me, as I don't much like the idea of BW's final product being changed story-wise to fit what fans want.

BioWare's final product is shaped and needs to always be shaped by only one thing: fun. Their story, their characters, their twists and what not are all designed to give players an enjoyable adventure. Putting in Tali and Garrus as romance options makes the game more fun for players, so BioWare put them in. As they should. Listening to fans (within a LOT of reason) doesn't produce inferior products. Fun beats every argument when it comes to what they should put it. BioWare is in the entertainment industry after all.

It probably was, and thank god they did.

When you're trying to sell something it's always important to give the people what they want.

Actually Tali was supposed to be an LI in Mass Effect 1, but that romance was cut out because according to Casey(I think) they didn't think anyone wanted to romance a "chicken-foot alien". After seeing the positive response to Tali, they realized their mistake.

Yes. Think about it, the only two returning members of Shepard's old crew are the two members that fans have begged to be love interests. I don't think that either were ever really considered options for romance (developers did say that they considered Tali during production, but then again hundreds of things are considered during production that never make it in to the game), but the fans wanted it and BioWare made it work.

They didn't change the story, they only created a new option.

I was too busy admiring Tali's Jennifer Lopez ass to care about her feet.

I will say that both of these romances being in 2 made them feel that much stronger.

Its total fan service. They have created a monster. Its so obvious that most of her character is now based on catering to this mass of people who think she is the universe of Mass Effect.

What they said was that they considered it, but didn't go with it. A lot of things are always considered during production; what we get in the game was choosen from likely hundreds of possible ideas they never went anywhere. The only difference with Tali was that they decided to go with it after throwing it away due to fan demand.

Um no, her character still seems to be the same old Tali as always, not unnatural progression.

I think Garrus really was, but I'm happy. I love Garrus. This goes to show you that there are still people that fall in love with a person based on personality not looks. I was hoping to have Wrexx as a LI because he was super interesting and I gelled real well with him.

Why are people complaining when Tali's and Garrus's romances are the two of the three most well-done romances in the game? The best romances aren't based on OMG BOOBS that Miranda (as lovely and voiced and modeled after Yvonne Strahovski as she is), but rather built on the foundation of trust and your attraction to the character's personality rather than their looks. Garrus fundamentally looks off-putting to humans (even people declaring that it is somehow zoophilia or beastality, not actually knowing what the words mean), Tali's, no matter how many the rabid fans declare it to be, is all about simply her personality because of the fact she's a quarian, and thus is not sexualized at all. Thane's (which is the third) is that feeling of redemption present, and again, not based on looks.

So maybe they were fan-service, but does it really matter? It's fanservice that ended for the better, which is good enough for me.

I think they both seemed a bit far fetched.  Tali didn't show any romantic interest in Shepard at all in Mass Effect 1 and all of the sudden she falls in love with him in Mass Effect 2?  So much so that she's willing to risk her life scrogging him?
Also, Turians are probably the least looking humanoid aliens in the galaxy yet he and Shepard agree to scrog?

I have nothing against these romances being included as fan service of course.  I just have trouble taking them seriously.

Yes,  you are correct in your assessment that this was probably fan service..........next question.

I can't say with Tali, but the Garrus romance at least seems natural to me, not like something hastily thrown together. It's obvious how much Garrus respects Shepard, he says so in the first game and then in the two years she is dead he assembles a team (like she did) so he can fight crime without regulations (like she taught him to do). After all they've been through they do a one-night stand type thing that becomes more, and it makes sense. Shepard says she wants someone she trusts, and Garrus has been around for everything. And as for inter-species relationships, Garrus says that he doesn't have some human fetish, he just likes Shepard.

Like Cascadus said very well, it's about their personality and trust rather than attraction.

Fan-service or not, both Tali and Garrus's romances were better done than the ones that were in ME1, or, heck, 99.98% of ANY video game out there.

Garrus's romance was awkward, funny, and yet surprisingly tragic, while Tali's felt like a continuation of her character from ME1, like a space-age fairy tale. I thought both were well done.

If you want to talk "fan-service" though, Miranda's "forward thrusters" and "rear cargo bay" probably cater to that more so than Tali or Garrus ever did.

I always thought that there was a potential Shepard crush in Tali back in ME1. The way she said "See you later Shepard!" like she was genuinely excited to see Shepard each time. Garrus seems more like fanservice, though.

Shepard is everything Garrus attempted to be, but couldn't due to his father holding him back. It's not hard to see that Garrus' respect for Shepard turned into adoration over time.

Regardless, both are understandable, even if they are fanservice.

I don't see why it's farfetched, for Tali at least. Quarians have already been said to be the race closest to human, so we know they are physically compatible. The only issue was immune systems.

A starship's sterile environment, combined with Tali's immuno-boosters....and considering that she didn't come out totally clean and unaffected, i think, made it quite believable.

Completely agree.

I'm speaking totally out of my ass here so please anyone feel free to ignore what I say but:

ME1, I felt the Liara romance had potential but as it is, she essentially meets you and falls completely and totally in love with you after one short conversation. It was totally done wrong and by actually using a good portion of her dialogue as a codex it undermines the supposed spiritual connection.

I don't have anything against the character and I like what's there but there was nothing for me to really latch onto aside from the fact that she was blue.

I felt Ash had a bit more chemistry with Shep but it always felt like I had to drag her uphill against her own nature. I was more than a little dissapointed that the only way to change her mind about aliens is to make a plea towards her faith in God. Very manipulative.

Now if Tali HAD  been romancable in 1 with the content she had, she'd fall into the Liara pitfall but I felt that in ME2 they totally focused on her characterization building on the good bits that were already there and that propelled the relationship forward.

Same with Garrus.
